I am posting this here because if there is any tribe in particular I would want to save and would be willing to pay to be able to acess its this one. I have grown to love not only Tribe but Burning woman... so if this is something you would be willing to do.. then respond. If not no big deal no need to respond.

The word in some of the admin tribes is that Tribe.net is in serious financial peril. Peril that may make this site go away. Most of us belong to MySpace and/or Bebo and/or Facebook, yet we return to Tribe because it is what serves us best. There are even rumors that Tribe is down to less than five employees.
Given the above, would you be willing to pay a $5/mo subscription fee to tribe as a Premium Member? Premium Members might receive benefits such as ad-free usage, more customizable skins, or other such bells and whistles. Please, if you support tribe and are willing to pay HALF THE COST OF A MOVIE TICKET for one month of Premium Usage, respond to this blog post. Repost this in YOUR BLOG. Collect the yays and nays and forward them to Pi. After ten days I will summarize the results and forward them to the Admins.

if it weren't for "the next generation" and their persistence in writing me there, I wouldn't be there at all.
Couldn't we all do tribe a lot of favors by just "clicking" on their ads every now and then?
I mean, we don't PAY anything. I like tribe. Well, MOST of the time. -

Sat, November 10, 2007 - 1:55 PMI really want Tribe to succedd, but honestly $5 a month is a lot for a social networking site. I'd expect much more benefits for that amount, such as allocation to a faster server and more proifle features.
$25 a year for premium membership seems more appropriate. Just about every other network out there is free and the ones that do have a pay service for premium levels are in the $12-$20 per year range. Compare that with the $60 a year being suggested here.
I hope the owners find a way to keep Tribe going. It's been the most beneficial and enjoyable site I use. but I've read some interesting things in the Tribe Bug and Ideas tribes. from posts it seems that the princpals haven't been making smart decisions regarding how to market Tribe and get advertisers. They've either ignored or feared the "alternative" demographic that makes up a large portion of tribe (as opposed to the more homegenous/generic MySpace and Facebook). That's not something that funding from members can help. In other words, I've gotten the impression that the problems are not simply due to lack of funding, but poor decision making.
I wish the staff or owners would give some info, ANY info about what's going on. Tribe has such a dedicated, loyal membership that WANTS to help.
but meanwhile, I'm preparing for The End:
I've gone through my profile and backed up images, blog entries and profile content.
I've started going through tribes and saving important or informational posts.
I've listed alternate ways to reach me at the top of my profile.
and I've made several backup networks for people to retreat to. -

Sat, November 10, 2007 - 5:56 PMFark.com has Total fark. For 5 bucks a month, you get a lot more stuff, and can do more in the sit's forums and suchlike.. You can even sponsor people! Many many people subscribe to the the Totalfark.
I don't, personally as I find being a "liter" plenty enough for me.
So, I think I would subscribe to a Totaltribe sort of thing.
I get enough enjoyment out of it and like this site way more than other social networking sites. There seems to be way more of a variety of people, age groups,belief systems etcetera that myspace and such lack.
I don't know anything about face book.

I really don't think a membership-based program is a viable business model. Sure, current devotees like us would pay. For awhile. But, no new members are going to join up and pay. The life-span of social networking sites seems to be about 3 years, and then the new big thing comes along and everybody moves.
As much as I would like to see tribe survive, it doesn't look pretty unless they cave into big business (again) and start really pushing the advertising. Or, it could work if somebody comes into a lot of cash through another project and keeps tribe afloat as a fun community service. My two cents.

Mon, November 12, 2007 - 3:10 PMi would happily pay -- and since it's clear that tribe isn't able to maintain what it is, and since mark already tried selling his soul to the devil and then took it back, i'd ultimately love to see tribe bequeathed for a more lively and compatible company that could take it on as an adjunct to their other services rather than just letting it go out in one big crash.
and... there is no such thing as a free networking site. some of the new ones are still in that operating-at-a-loss-until-you-grow phase, and some are living on venture capital. but ultimately, every company has to have a sustainable business model. if you don't pay, then they make their money from advertising dollars in some way, whether that's feeding you ads on every page, or hoping for click-throughs on google ads in a sidebar, or selling your information to marketers. the money has to come from somewhere to keep the enterprise going.
but i'd happily pay 5 bucks a month to keep it alive for a while, and if it's a matter of cash flow, i bet a fundraising drive could raise a chunk of one-time dionations from loyal users. -

not to say that I would not be willing to pay a yearly subscription to Tribe in exchange for no ads and other nice little added-service for instance...
I pay a yearly subscription to Flickr even though they have a free service (they were bought by Yahoo!), in exchange for that I get no ads and unlimited monthly storage...
