The only thing in common with Burning Man is camping.

The site is a state park and as mentioned by others it has full facilities, but very little privacy. The showers are locker room style.

Most camping spots are shaded by big trees so hauling a shade structure is not needed.

LIB is an entertainment event. There are stages and there are venues, line-ups and schedules. Participation is rather minimal but entertainment is quite good.

Think of LIB as the poor woman's Coachella Music Festival. As a matter of fact, the Do Lab just did a grand circus side show installation at Coachella and this will be the encore performance for the locals, friends n family etc. All of the good stuff from Coachella will be featured at LIB.

Vending is encouraged at LIB. In past years it was rather lame but I hear more effort is being put into providing relevant vending for your endless shopping pleasure.

AFAIK, the long standing curfew mandated by the Park Rangers is in effect. All amplified sound ends at 10PM or somesuch. In years past this was stretched out a bit but you WILL get a peaceful night of sleep at LIB. I view this as a good thing but then again, I'm old, arthritic and value my sleep these days.

This is, for sure, a Nouveau Los Angeles Hippie event. It is an interesting melange of old-school hippie and new age raver / circus side show with a touch of burner thrown in and a healthy dose of self help / landmark forum cult-like fanatical devotion by the fan base.

    Disclosure:
I've been... no, I'm not going again... no, I am not affiliated... Yes, I do know the organizers... I would recommend it as it allows a glimpse into a bit of LA counter culture... This is about as far from the Burning Man principles as it gets, but a good time nonetheless.

At some point, yes. I cannot for the life of me remember if it was 10, midnight ... I do remember walking about at ~ 2AM and there was a group of ~ 1/2 dozen drummers in the commissary area but other than that, silence ...

This was a couple years ago but I do not think the rules change in state parks that much.

Despite this, it is a very good time. Don't let the curfew fool you. It does not die totally dead. You must mingle to get the good times going.

          Regarding music.. from the site:

"The stages will be live and in effect starting on Friday from 3pm till midnight, and from around 10am to midnight on Saturday and Sunday. Three whole days! After midnight expect special surprises, acoustic jam sessions and other fun stuff to carry the festival through the night. And there's no need to dash out on Monday. The gates close Tuesday at noon, so you're free to stick around 'til then and enjoy the forest!"

LIB is in a great area, with big shady trees, water spigots at regular intervals, and electricity throughout the campground (but bring a power strip and extension cord if you want it, because the people who come in early pretty much stake it out early so you'll need a way to share it with them and let them keep their blinky lights and night art pieces lighted.) The shower is like a big open room-downside is that there is no privacy, but the upside is that there isn't a long line to wait in to take a shower.

Last year they had it around Mother's Day, and the temperature was PERFECT, probably in the mid-70's during the day (a little chilly at night, maybe down into the low 50's,so bring a coat and a good sleeping bag). This year I imagine it will be up to 10 degrees hotter during the day because it gets pretty hot out in that valley in the summer (and summer is that much closer), but don't forget your jacket or coat for night because once the sun goes down it cools off quickly.

There are 3 stages spread throughout the campground-the main one is up on a hill above the camping spots and surrounded by vendors (who serve good food and beverages if you don't mind paying the premium for them all weekend). The main stage is a real raised stage with curtains and everthing, and last year they had a performance stage set up close to it for Cirque Berserk and other acrobatic acts. The other 2 stages are smaller and more intimate-last year one was in a covered dome in a clearing and another was open field, but had a big above-ground swimming pool at he back of the dance floor to cool off in.

The venue is small-ish, which turns out to be nice because you can walk to wherever you want to go within 5 minutes. Wear comfortable walking shoes or boots, though, because the roads have a lot of soft dirt and gopher holes on them and you would be constantly twisting your ankle if you tried to walk around in high heels. Last year they had some awesome workshops and I hear they have a great line-up again this year.

It isn't too loud at night, so even if you are a light sleeper it won't be as hard to fall asleep as it is at Burning Man. I didn't need ear plugs, and even slept in till 10 before things heated up one morning last year.

The only downside I can see this year over last is that they want to bring in more people, so they are making you park about a mile away and bringing you into camp on a shuttle (so camping places won't be filled with parked cars). So leave the big pieces of art and Theme Camp Fun Stuff and extra camping stuff at home and just bring the bare minimum of what you need because you will have to carry it in and out. You can drive in an RV (for $75 extra) or car (for $50 extra) but on the site it says there are a limited number of spaces for them so don't count on it if you haven't already bought the pass. Try to leave the valuables you don't want to carry around with you home, as there really won't be enough lockers to store them in and your car is so far away......

I am in no way affiliated with the Lightning in a Bottle crew but I think it is a good time-and such a kinder, gentler camping experience than the Black Rock Desert, with these amazing creative Burner-type people thrown in! I am not coming out for the whole time this year (other things going on that weekend) but I live close and am going to at least come out on a day pass one day.

I just got a schedule of the line-up, and it had a lot of music I wanted to see at Burning Man but due to Playadipity didn't get around to checking out much (OK, saw the awesome Bassnector-DJ Lorin thang) but also West Indian Girl, Lucient Dossier, March Fourth Marching Band (big fun-saw them at LIB last year) great lineup-easy to get to. Also wanted to see Daniel Pinchback, but was clear over by Root Society and always got distracted on my way over to Entheon Village-should be easier here due to the smaller venue!

hauling a shade structure is not needed
      ++++++

I'd disagree with that. There are many trees, and a lot of shade, but not enough for every single camper. I'd bring a shade structure no matter what.

Last year I was completely unprepared for how cold it was at night. I didn't bring my burner coat and I was FREEZING! And then the daytime is mighty hot.

If you can get there early, try to camp under a tree- there are plenty, but they'll get picked first. Also, pack light so you don't have to cart a ton of stuff up the hill to the camp area.

There is vending, but bring your own food and water anyway. bring a travel mug if you want coffee in the morning. There is running water and group showers (!).

The music does indeed shut off at midnight, but individual camps keep it going. Last year I had the honor of camping next to a thumpa thump camp that had the music going until dawn. Not so much fun.

And of course, sunscreen and plenty of it.
