Sunblock - whatever you use, the key to it working is to apply it liberally, and often. Don't wait until you "feel" like you're starting to burn.

For after care, I've done everything from baking soda paste to bathing in apple cider vinegar. Time is really the main thing, staying hydrating and keeping the skin moisturized as you heal. You've really damaged your skin, ya know? There's no miracle treament for it. The cells just need time to regenerate and such.

I slather on aloe, aloe, aloe for the first day or so, and then whatever else heavy duty moisturizer - or coconut oil, I like that a lot.

For sunblock, I like the spray-on stuff, SPF 45 at least. It even sprays upside down, which means you can hit the back side of your armpit, behind the knees, and all those other pesky places that are easy to forget.

For sunburns, yup aloe slathered on by the hour is what works for me.

to peel or not to peel...and just let it all sloff off naturally?

I just got a really bad one on my back... couldn't sleep for like 3 days or anything. Went to the pharmacy and got aloe that has lidocaine in it. Works much better than regular aloe. The main brand name stuff is called Solarcaine, but pharmacies have their own knock off brands.

Don't peel it off yourself...but it will peel off regardless. No way to stop that. But think of it like a scab (which it kind of is)...don't pick at it.

Vinegar! stinks like crazy & stings for a bit but put vinegar on sunburn BEFORE putting aloe or any other cream & it will help take the pain out of the sunburn. You don't have to leave it on for long, just as long as you can stand the smell & then rinse it off. Pure vitamin E oil also does amazing things for your skin when applied topically. Of course nothing can save the skin thats already burned, but you can help the new skin underneath.Vitamin E oil is a little more expensive, but well worth the price. All you have to do is ask yourself how much you like your skin...:)

when i was a kid, we didn't use suntan lotion. i had some mofo's of sunburns. and the worst i've had as an adult was when i went to my first nude beach at 19 and my poor pale skin just couldn't take it. i spent two days laying on the floor, pretty much unable to move, covered with soft cloths that my friends would keep rewetting.

and i got a bad one recently on a beautiful day when i didn't put block on my legs, but sat at a picnic for a couple of hours. i still have stripes of fading tan on my legs. weird-looking.

one thing i've learned as a home-made remedy is milk. when the sunburn is fresh, keep dabbing milk on it. it dries, but there are enzymes that apparently help process the burn faster.

and yes, aloe if you have it. fresh is best, but they sell stuff that's almost 100% aloe. use that instead of something that just has aloe added to it.

i'd say don't peel it yourself, but once it's past the pain, you can use an exfoliating cloth of some sort on it.

on the playa, and when i live on the beach in thailand, i put sunblock on once in the morning -- i use 30, which is plenty sufficient for how much time i'm out in the sun, and slather it on when i'm naked and looking in a mirror so i don't miss any spots. and i let it soak in. i never re-apply it during the day, when well-applied, it seems to last.

i use a 45spf on my face, one that's meant for faces so it's not as annoying when it drips into my eyes. that one i will reapply.

I prefer the spray on stuff for the playa. I usually have an assortment of 30, 50, & 70. I use the coppertone sport. the spray goes on clear and dries almost instantly and you don't have to rub it in. This is especially nice if you have some dust on you (like you ever don't) because rubbing sunscreen and dust into your skin is icky feeling to me.

For my face, I use spf 70 special stuff for faces that doesn't clogg the pores, I carry a small ziplock of babywipes to wipe my face off with prior to applying.

On a side note..Due to the higher than sealevel area of the playa, you will burn faster than at sea level. Also remember to wear 100% uv sunglasses during the day to protect your eyes. Sunburned retinas hurt like hell. A wide brim hat is also a good idea.

hehehe yeah actually the best sunburn or burn treatment I ever had... was my own fresh breast milk. But breast milk is a tad hard to come by... but it will make you heal FAST!

i don't know if that's old-school brilliant wisdom, or totally weird, gigi! at least it was your own breast milk... i think someone else's would be a no-can-do for me. which would make it, then, for me, impossible to come by. ;^)

LOL I know Leslie, honestly I had heard at La leche league that it had healing properties and could not resist the chance for my our scientific experiment since I had it readily available :-) I couldn't do any one else's either... its kinda personal :-)

I really like the Neutragena Ultra Sheer sunscreen for my face because it's lightweight and not greasy. I use it instead of moisturizer during the sunny months (I live in Portland) and at the burn. I also like the Coppertone oil-free stuff, just because I hate the heavy, sticky stuff out on the playa when I'm already hot and sticky. We also have some sprayable waterproof (baby, I think) stuff, which is good for hard to reach places, if you're alone and for your scalp. Please spray your scalp! A sunburned head is rather unpleasant.

I like the aloe with lidocaine for burns. Takes the edge off.

thanks for all the input and advice!

i scrubbed mildly with my natural bristle back brush...and that helped a lot.
the new skin is very sensitive...and hurts to touch still :(
i also mixed up some Vitamin E oil, coconut oil and a drop of lavender oil....and that REALLY helped...
the blotchy patches are fugly :( but it's a lesson learned!

i bought some "Burt's Bees" sunblock...i like their other products and was psyched to find a 30spf
on the bottle it says "NON-WHITENING" as soon as i put it on my face...it was white...very white :(
disappointing...but i'll use it anyway so as not to waste it.

i also got some spray on 30spf for the burn, 3 bottles! :D

vinigar will help stave off peeling (best done right away) but it will sting

after that aloe and cool compresses

Remember that if you don't wear some kind of head covering to put sunblock on your ears. Be cautious about the part in your hair, too. Light-skinned folks can't be too careful!

Sadly, as a redhead who hates putting on sunscreen (stupid, i know) i have a bit too much experience in this area.

-aloe vera, apply liberally and often so the skin is always moist. The fresher the better
-camomile tea (or any tea with tannen). You can steep some in water and then put a washcloth in it and make a compress for yourself.
-Warm bath (more on the cool side). You can add in: Oatmeal (i never tried though) or apple cider vinegar
-sour cream if you've got nothing else (typical russian treatment, but I suppose any heavy-cream would work here)

    My top four :)

oOoo chamomile tea, hmm..maybe w/ some canduella flowers in it too, i'll bring some on the playa with some aloe as part of my 1st aid kit.
Plus a jar of that coconut/vit-E/lavender oil i made.

as far as the vinegar goes...i'm sure pickle juice would work too on the playa, and i love pickles on the playa...
speaking of which...i might just bring a jar of my garden garlic/dilled pickles :)

      <now, quit eating the pickles...they're for BM>

I find Witchazel to be very good for sunburns. There's a slight odour when you first apply, but it fades as it dries. It feels good, and it typically prevents me from peeling.

Only use Aloe while you still have pain. Aloe actually sucks the moisture from your skin. Once it stops hurting, start using something that adds moisture back into the skin.

I like Skinceuticals range of sunscreen - have yet to burn on the playa.

I have really pale skin, but it tans really dark. My advice always - which I don't think anyone has ever taken ;] is GO TANNING AHEAD OF TIME. You will be totally dark, yes - you have to pay for it and go in the tanning bed with the ridiculous teeny boppers and rap music in the tanning salon and the whole nine but if you start NOW and get a dark tan before you go, you will not even need sunscreen on the playa. Been doin' it for years, YMMV.
