I recently found out that the days that have to be cut to balance next year's school budget might, just might come out of the week of Burning Man which means I might be a virgin this year and to celebrate that possibility I went thrifting and found an eighties silk and sequined blazer that I turned upside down and fashioned a skirt with a couple of deep pockets (AKA the sleeve lining)
It's comfortable enough, but what would YOU suggest as a MUST have for the various temps that the playa offers?

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Sun, May 24, 2009 - 11:32 PMI wear steel tip work boots, cut offs, wife beaters, coveralls, welding jacket, goggles, a cowboy hat and call it good for the most part.
I suggest planning for comfort over style for the most part. Have clothes ready for any temperature,or weather condition. Costuming is fun and all that, but seriously- being able to stay warm or cool as the situation dictates is WAY more important to your good time.
Also, nothing with sequins, feathers, or any of those little things that can fall off onto the playa. MOOP is not your friend.
But for a few good cheap simple ideas- slips are good, lingerie, a corset or two, boy shorts, knee socks, a pair of high boots that you can walk in ( again comfort over style) and you got pretty much a costume.
And all can be found in thrift stores for cheap. -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 10:08 AMI have a couple of slips I practically live in. My favorite is a stretchy mesh one, great ventilation. They also make those trips to the blue room easier - fucking around with fussy outfits is the last thing I want to do (in an altered state) in a dark porto.
Hats are also good, both for night and day - keeping your face/head shaded during the day or a knit/fuzzy one at night goes far in climate control.
I was also amazed to learn how much warmth fishnets provide. Seems crazy, but they do help keep your legs warm at night - not to mention look fabulous. -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 12:28 PMRE: fishnets- I know, huh? I LOVE them. I'm becoming a huge fan of booty shorts + fishnets + boots, and whatever-strikes-my-fancy-right-then as a top. Even at night, my legs don't get too cold, as long as I'm wearing warmer stuff on top. -
-
Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 5:39 PMOMG I was thinking the same thing... fish nets provied just enough friction controll, with booty shorts my big ass boots, and a top of my choosing. I top it off with a cowboy hat and sarong diped in cooler water for day. At night its the cowboy hat and a faux fur coat

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 8:27 AMCute panties, good socks, comfy shoes sunglasses and a sunhat. Add sunscreen and you're good to go. Throw something warm into a bike basket in case night catches you fast. I HATE wearing clothes during the day, even light, airy ones. At night, tights, boots, and whatever strikes my fancy, as long as it's got an adjustable thermostat (layers, etc.) -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Thu, June 4, 2009 - 9:44 PMsetting up camp....cargo shorts...utiliskirt....tanktop..closed toed shoes...
running camp and chilling, touring etall...i usually start out with "an outfit"....a short stretchy skirt, or my utiliskirt, or a short airy dress.... bare foot, or sandals......but after a steambath..... nothing but my cowgal hat..
several years ago i made 2 fleece lined long corduroy skirts....they're split down the sides and part way up the middlefront for great ventilation and warmth...with wacky tights and comfy boots with squishy insole inserts.....a polypro thermal top...or furry top...or tanktop (it all depends on the weather at night) 2007 had some warmer nights....but i always carry my penguin coat in my big bike basket...just in case...and it's big enough to fit two...huddled up during a whiteout.....and is equipped with a huge el-wire penguin on the back :)
layers are key...and a big bike basket....take off alls your layers BEFORE going into the dance tent....and keep with bike....that's what i do,
and surprisingly i don't loose as many things!

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 12:34 PMLeg warmers are the one thing that I always recommend...I wear them every night and they do wonders to keep you warmer.
Daytime: slips, cute underwear, bikini tops, wraparound skirts of any kind (including a random piece of fabric just tied a the waist)...but the best thing both comfort and style-wise was my kimono. Sooo comfortable and I got tons of compliments too. Check out some old-school bathing suits too--super cute and most have awesome support built in.
Nighttime: I find it easier to have a few layers going and one large coat. Hats are awesome and cute. Arm warmers are also good, as are scarves. Having warm things on your feet/ankles, head, neck, and wrists will go a long way toward keeping the rest of you warm.
As noted by others here, I go for comfort way over style every time...eight years has proven that I will gladly wear the same comfy slip five days straight than the uncomfortable but oh so cute corset thing that doesn't breathe and is kind of itchy. This goes twenty times over with shoes...comfort over style every. time. I wear heels pretty much all the time, so I dig platform sandals in the day and fairly high boots at night. Oh, and don't forget the slip-on slippers/sandals that you'll want when you're stumbling to the bathroom first thing in the morning or at night, or just lounging at camp making breakfast or whatnot. -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 6:30 PMA big faux fur coat is awesome for the playa nights too. Also something one can find in thrift stores. Don't bring a really nice or well loved one unless you are okay with playa becoming part of the coat forever.

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 6:48 PMUnderwear to keep dust out of certain places. Other than that nothing, but a hat, during the day and at night I bundle up completely, it gets freezing cold!

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 8:51 PMDitto ditto on the fishnet thing. It defies logic but somehow they help to insulate the body, trap it's heat.
Also ditto ditto on comfort over style, but I like to wear platforms whenever I can cuz I'm convinced that the higher up you are from the ground, the less dust you breathe, and since I'm short, every little bit helps. But if you're not comfortable with platforms then don't. The added altitude isn't worth the risk of turning an ankle.
Also, sarongs are wonderful since they're really versatile and you can find so many lovely patterns and colors these days.
Find a way to attach your stuff to your body -- I have a sturdy leather belt with metal O-rings to which I caribiner pouch, camera, water bottle, etc. to free up my hands. Make sure everything you wear has storage, lots and lots of pockets, deep ones, and some that fasten closed somehow.
Don't forget goggles, but tinted for daytime use and clear for nighttime use, and scarves or dustmasks. The dust storms the last few years have been fierce.
Ya know what? You really should check out the Playalicious Playwear tribev-- playaliciousplaywear.tribe.net/

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 6:31 PMTutu's, my oldest pair of holey Converse, panties, and many many scarves ala Steven Tyler. Sarongs are great for chilling around camp but get to be a pain when trecking. -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 7:05 PMI always have themed outfits...but they require more work and make-up than I think I should try to take out there. So I have no idea what I'm going to wear..../sigh

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Tue, May 26, 2009 - 7:14 PMI made a silver capelette last year that was the bomb while walking and biking about. Also a stylish homemade 'cool tie' really worked at, duh, keeping me cool.
Manditory - comfortable but stylish footwear. You don't want to have blisters going into the weekend. -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 6:08 PMI wore my boots almost all week, both burns I've been to. Scarves, sarongs, bandannas, armwarmers were great accessories. A good day bag. Lots of underwear, yeah, gotta keep the dainty bits clean and happy. -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 6:11 PMSLIPS RULE! I live in them. I buy them at thrift stores, and I can even find them in larger sizes.
BIG FUN HINT: RIT dye works on most nylon slips and lingerie!! Its fabulous.....Dye away.....Sometimes the lace wont dye so you get this cool white effect with the coloring. I wear my hair falls (same ones all the time, the comfortable ones) and the slips and I cover my feet and Im a happy camper. If I want to get into costuming, I carry a garden lotus on a stick with an L wire wrapped in it (like a big magic wand) or do my face up, or something that wont get in the way of my comfort. -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, June 8, 2009 - 9:39 PMarm warmers are the best. i made a few from fleece fabric in 06. they are super easy to make (pm me if you want simple directions) and cozy!
my cowboy hat is essential. really helpful for sun protection and oh yeah it looks hawt too. tip: attach a chin strap if there isn't one already.
comfy shoes are a MUST. throw those go-go platform-fuck-me-shoes in the back of your closet and go for the i-can-wear-these-shoes-forever. you can snazz them up or leave em' as is. no one will care.
GOOD luck!

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 10:36 AMI agree on the fishnets. If that isnt' enough, a pair of flesh colored tights under the fishnets is even warmer. My favorite night time apparel is fleece pajama bottoms. They are warm (even warmer with tights under), comfortable and come in an amazing array of colors and patterns. I bought our coats at a thrift store and added a strip of faux fur to the collars, sleeves and bottom for an easy playa coat.
During the day, I wear a lot of skirts, cute dresses and tank tops with bra shelves. I HATE wearing a bra on the playa but am too top heavy to go without support. I also wear cotton pajama bottoms during the day. I just bought a pair of pajama bottoms with bright colored circles all over. They look like a twister game made into pants. I cut them off and sewed hot pink and lime green lace on the bottom for some wild bloomers. I tend to go for bright colors and light, breathable fabric.
Other essentials........sarongs and scarves to cover my shoulders from the sun and my face during a dust storm; my playa bag with sunscreen, camera, snack, paper & pen, kleenex, etc. that I carry everywhere; my lanyard with mini flashlight, lip balm, bike lock key that I wear everywhere; comfortable tennis shoes and slippers to wear around camp and the first morning trip to the potties.

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Thu, June 18, 2009 - 11:26 PMThat is awesome that you might get to go to BM this year! Those who have pointed out that sequins in the playa are not a good idea, are correct. However, there is an easy, fun way to salvage your skirt (since you seem crafty). Make an organza overskirt for it, and sew it at the waist and hem. That way you still get all the sparkly glittery funness of the sequins without the dreaded moop effect. Believe me, you will feel awful if you leave a trail of sparklies wherever you go. Hope it works out for you and you get your cherry popped!

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 12:37 PMI love sarongs. During the day they can be a dress or skirt or keep the sun off your shoulders. And I love to dunk them into the melted cooler water, wring them out and wear them wet during the hottest part of the day. Sleep under a wet sarong, or hug friends with a wet sarong, its all wonderful. -
-
Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 1:30 PMWet sarongs are so awesome that Im thinking of bringing a grey water bucket soley for the purpose of ringing out my sarong in it.
True, wet sarong can turn into sand mud cloth after a dust storm, but the protection is still great! Plus, usually they dry quick before the storm comes.
I live in Rit dyed slips, too
I too like fishnets with some high cotton sox over them....
I love Sock Dreams thigh high stripes, the big kind. Add combat boots, and when I want, Sandals, and they help with playa leg and foot. Cotton with lots of color = yay!
Dreadfalls, I have one plainish one I love and I put my hair in a bun and protect my hair with the wool fake dreads. They are super light weight. Thats my ultimate playa wear. I dont do pigtails well, just a nice fatty in the back. I dont like braiding my hair and my scalp is sensitive, so this is my favorite. Plus I can shampoo my hair without it in, and take it out when I sleep, too. My front hair gets matted from playa but the rest stays fairly nice. I wear a visor with it for my eyes and shade, and a headband so the top of my head doesnt get burned.
I got the BEST long black fur coat for this year! Its wonderful! Got it for $10 at Hospice, it kicks ass I cant wait to break it in....softest fake fur ever. Its gonna get dustieeeeee. -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 1:35 PMCute funky/fuzzy bathrobes to throw on for the first porto-pottie run of the day, accompanied by novelty slippers (bunny, Taz, Scooby-Doo?) And I'm not ashamed to stay dressed this way around camp for an hour or two, until the morning coffee kicks in! -
-
Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 2:40 PMWhat, you shouldn't ever feel ashamed ever to wear a furry robe and slippies anywhere especially at a burn ;) I myself will run errands out in public in the default world dressed in slippers, jammies and a robe, I just don't give a hoot ya know ;-) -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Tue, June 23, 2009 - 3:23 PMAh, but once the morning coffee does kick in, it starts to get a little too warm for furry (and becomes time to think about which costume you're *really* going to wear that day ...) -

Re: what is your favorite playawear?
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 10:07 AMI know I am completely insane, but black corsets (the trick is to change out of them at least once a day, and not to sleep in them). Usually worn with a very not bike-friendly long iridescent green prom skirt I found at Goodwill, sides tied into balls with two simple hair ties. And black Hot Topic boots I got in high school and are now permanently playafied.
There's also this long-ass iridescent purple jacket that someone from a costume camp lent me last year and I never returned it because it was so toasty warm and I couldn't for the life of me find their camp during the daytime. Might return it this year, or give 'em something equally toasty and cool-looking in return. Because egads, I love that jacket. ^____^
