I am getting a lot of information

Bring a hat for shade, bandanas and googles for sand storms. Something warm for the night. One thing that is not addressed anywhere is what kind of shoes should one wear. Sandals, work boots, tennis shoes.?

Thanks to everyone that replied to my previous post.. I got a lot of great information.

I do believe I understand the gifting idea. Hey i'm a child of the "sixties" I use to stand around and Blow Bubbles as a gift for the people that walked around me. That is after we all shared a gallon of wine laced with mushrooms. LOL

    Boots. Comfortable boots.

I usually take a pair of 5'' platform boots and wear them the whole time - with a backup pair of simple flat motorcycle boots. Platforms work way better than anything with a heel.

But your comfort may vary. Some people go barefoot or wear flip flops - I could never handle my feet being that dirty or dried out.

There are a couple of threads from a few weeks back about boots.... I know the search function sucks right now.

if you don't know what the alkaline environment does to your feet. Make sure they are covered. Sandals generally are not recommended because you can cause some serious playa foot. Dry, cracked, difficult to heal feet.

I have fun boots that were also comfortable to wear. But generally you want to cover your feet. I would walk barefoot on the ground a couple times, making quick runs around the camp, and during an impromptu fire performance on the playa but that's it. I kept a spray around of lemon juice and water to battle the playa effects on my hands and feet.

be wary on the gifting of druggie items especially disguised as a spray or drink, not everyone will believe this is a gift. Not saying you would do this but it is done and should be brought up.

      Thanks Iris

Don't worry I haven't done drugs in 30 some odd years. I would never give anything to anyone with out telling them first. I even make sure people know about the nuts in food I make.

Boots are good as long as they're comfie....

I ended up with some blisters after an unexpected walk
back to camp when my man locked our bikes together in the
deep playa and left the key back at camp.

Also I have a hard time covering my feet when it's warm
outside, so covered sandals are fine with socks as long
as you wash up properly (lemon or vinegar water) after
and lotion up well the entire time. I saw one person who
didn't wash his feet and wore sandals the whole time and
he indeed did have major playa foot. So take care of your
tootsies and they'll take care of you.

    boots are NOT for everyone!

I have exczema. THat means my feet are cracked with or without playa foot.

FUCK BOOTS! They make my feet sweaty and make me overheat something fierce! I wear sandles. Sometimes with socks and sometimes without. And youre not gonna look like a dork if you wear socks with sandles out there!

I say bring them both. I did. Then I decided my boots would gather dust in my tent.

I wore socks with sandals during the day and I never got playa foot. Of course, I applied liberal amounts of Gold Bond medicated lotion before I went to sleep, and covered with clean socks so it would soak in and heal. That felt really good, too, because it has menthol and is cooling! :-)

Platform boots at night were my choice... I did have friends who wore boots during the day but I thought it was just too dang hot.

I wear sandals with brightly colored cotton socks. The cotton part is important to my feet. I also have some mesh summer shoes, and again, socks. I do have boots and platform boots, but these tend to be nightwear.

I'm breaking in the cowboy boots, but my feet have other ideas.

I usally wear tennis shoes, Uggs or hiking boots, and I have cushy insoles in all of them. I have also worn Birkenstock (knockoffs) with socks. If the socks and sandals thing offends your fashion sense, you could wear fun knee socks with them!

But no matter what, COMFORT is the key. Costume from the ankles up if you need to, but you will be miserable with uncomfortable shoes, no matter how cool you look!

Last year was my first year and I brought my chaco sandals and a pair of boots. I was advised HEAVILY not to go bare foot. But I'm a barefoot lady. A few days in, I did what what made me happy, and went barefoot every day. The ground wasn't hot to me, and my feet got VERY dusty, but not cracked or dry. I soaked my feet in foot dressing daily (olive oil and white vineager-moisturize and re-acidify) or wiped them with a vineager cloth to clean them randomly. I was very happy barefoot. I wore my boot at nights because of the cold and safety.

However, this year, I will be bringing a more comfortable pair of boots, in attempt to keep my toes protected (no nothing happened, but I recognize the possibility). We'll see.

    • NO barefeet, no sandals

      Thu, April 26, 2007 - 11:36 AM
really good, comfy sneakers are not bad.

I don't recommend going barefoot. My boyfriend ended up walking around in his socks during his first year because his shoes didn't fit right. He was suffering for a LONG time (during and after BM). When BM ended, his feet were so bad he could barely walk.
      Playa foot is bad.
Some people dig the sandals/minimal foot wear. Others suffer BADLY for it.
If you don't know how you handle it, the consequences could be very bad.

I hate shoes & socks in the heat - but ended up wearing teva sandals with socks at BM last year with no problems. I also frequently cleaned and massaged my feet with lotion before changing my socks, going to bed, and/or heading out for the night. Never got playafoot this way. Several of my campmates brought the lemon / vinegar kits to deal with the alkali, but I never used it.

I also kept around sneakers just in case and flip flops for wearing around camp on the rare occassion.

For night time, PLAYA BOOTS! Keeps your feet warm and cozy! Problem - this means something different to everyone! We rode our bikes at night (don't worry - we were very well lit) - so heels were not a good idea. Even when I wasn't on my bike, heels for walking and dancing for hours on end don't work for me. I found some mid-calf suede boots on sale at Shoe Pavilion last summer - these were great for me and they were cheap so I didn't mind playa-fying the leather.

Whatever shoes you bring - make sure you break them in before getting to the playa!!

The word in general is that:
Office Feet (pasty white and soft) should not go barefoot and should be aware in flippys.
Barefoot Feet (tanned and hard-soled) will do fine barefoot and in flippies.

Boots at night 'cause it gets cold - but even there folks are blowin' the 'rules', dammit.
I peacefully walked the burnt-man coals in my flipflops, fire licking all around me.

          Safety Third!
          (and a happy sigh)

"Barefoot Feet (tanned and hard-soled) will do fine barefoot and in flippies. "

I'd agree as a general rule, but I've seen this to not always be true. A good friend of mine practically lives barefoot. However on the playa, she has dreadful reactions to the alkaline. So my suggestion, no matter how tolerant your feet are in the default world, is to be prepared to tend to your feet and have footwear that covers and protects them if need be.

I cannot STAND how playa dust feels on my feet. Cover me head to ankle and I won't shower for days on end, but keep that stuff OFF my toes. (Gives me chills just thinking about how it feels on the RV floor at night on the way to bed. Blearrughgh!) Dry, chalky, and nasty. Some folks love it...my BF rocks the flip flops as often as not out there, and just the sight of his toes all dusty squicks me out.

I wear my Fluevog platfom cowboy boots most every day out there. Platforms are great - I can't wear heels where my heel is canted higher than my toe, but plats can make me tall tall tall and still have my foot and ankle parallel. Whee! I am never without socks and boots.
              • Yay for furry boot covers!

                Wed, May 2, 2007 - 2:22 PM
I wear sneakers and socks and then put furry boot covers over them to match my costume. You need to be prepared to walk a LOT so bring shoes that are comfortable. And bring more than one pair in case you get blisters or have a problem with them on the Playa. I wear Tevas around camp but wash & lotion my feet if they are exposed to playa dust.

The playa is wicked hard......like walking on concrete with crushed stone on it hard.

I got some of those gel inserts for my boots...and my feet LOVED them!
esp.....when i was running to the man the night of the burn :)

    I camp with SBP ( tribes.tribe.net/steambathproject ), and wore flip-flops during the day...but washed my feet 4-6x's a day.
I also used an olive oil based homemade lavender lotion at night, with fresh soxs.

I actually wore "boxing boots" most of the time this past year. They are super light weight and BREATHE! I can't stand sweaty toes. I did have to change my socks out on a very regular basis, as playa did get in. I didn't have any playa foot issues and my feet never got overheated or sweaty. For night time, I covered the boots with boot covers. Totally comfy.

I have big, nasty, flat feet, and expected to wear boots most of the time. However, one hearty walk later my feet were killing me. Here's what kicked ass:
1.) Tennis shoes for long walks and DANCING. God...bless...sneakers...
2.) Keene's for walks in daytime hotness. If you don't know this brand, they make really sturdy sandals with reinforced toes for hiking. Great combat against random playa rocks/accidental encounters with sharp things.
3.) Flip-flops for quick walks to your camp shower.

I used foot salad constantly, and my feet were still a little tore up, but nothing a good lotion wouldn't cure. Boots are most useful for setting up your camp.

Everyone has great suggestions here! Mine is "socks, socks, socks"! When your socks get a little worn or maybe a tiny hole in them, throw them into your "Burningman Supplies" box. I must buy cheap socks or wear them hard, but I end up with 15-20 socks every Burn (well-I am married and I take off with DH's worn socks too). Then you can wear them under the comfy sandals, Berks, etc and not trash your feet. Just change every night before bed because you want clean socks in your bed. I take the old socks because they never come clean anyway, so they get their last hurrah at Burningman before I throw them out . I have extras for friends too!

Don't worry about what sandals with socks will look like-what is dorky in the default world is just plain sensible at BRC-and people admire you more for taking care of yourself out there than your fashion sense. Plus-no matter how fabulous your pedicure is-it is covered with thick dust -no one can see it-about 5 minutes out on the Playa anyway. If you are really mortified to look like a 60 year old tacky tourist, get the "boot covers" and cover them up in style!

My campmate wore her Ugg boots the whole time we were out there and they looked smashing with her cool Barbarella outfits, I found these bitchin' "Tactical ResponseGear" boots on sale at Sportmart (cheap-maybe $30-but comfortable and durable!). They told me these are what the Highway Patrol Wears. Also-NO "Man-made materials"-they don't breathe! Leather-and maybe cotton-will keep your feet from reeking and they will feel cooler too. Add Gel inserts and socks, and I really only needed that one pair of boots all week.

One last word of advice-don't buy a a new pair of shoes/boots the day before you leave-for one thing they could give you blisters, and for another thing they will be playa-fied, as in ruined for the default world. Buy a pair now, wear them around, revel in their new shiney-ness and that way you will have gotten your money's worth, broken them in, and you won't be so sad when the Burn week is over and they are that dusty grey that wont come off no matter what!

I do the opposite with socks.....I buy a couple of pairs of brand new, thick, soft ones for BM. I especially like those really soft, fuzzy ones to wear at night when I'm sleeping (with a thick layer of minty reflexology foot creme first).

Yeah, they might get ruined, but I want the most absolute comfort for my tootsies that I can!

I love that footcream. Have about 3 jars in my cuboard now. I also like the fuzzy socks thing too as I have an aversion to footwear whenever I can. (I swear my feet are always 20 degrees hotter than the rest of me) But I think my favorite suggestion so far (and the funnest one) is the fuzzy slippers.
Can't you just picture a parage of animal faced slippers heading across the playa :-)

just wanted to add that I've discovered Shea Butter cream and it's been the best. It's thick and really seems to heal the skin. and it doesn't sting on sunburned skin!!! I got burnt at our regional and found regular lotion and even plain aloe gel sting, while the shea butter went on painlessly, lasted longer, and healed me faster. I got a plastic jar for $12 at a health food store and it was worth the money, lasts for months. I think it'd be fantastic for playa skin.

Though it is temperature sensitive. It will become thinner in heat, so you need to put it in a baggy to make sure you don't get drips. And it becomes much more solid in deep cold, making it harder to use. I solved this by placing the jar in the hot water left over from dinner or evening hot chocolate. We had about an inch of water left in the small pot so I let the water cool a bit, then just placed the jar in the pot for about 5 minutes while I ate/drank.

shea butter is what african women have been slathering on their skin for hundreds of years, since it is so healing and contains a natural sunscreen.

it's yummy yummy stuff!! and it's not petroleum based!!

      bridget o leary,
my first bm I had to fly in from the east coast, couldn't pack much either. I had shipped some stuff ahead of time (probably not an option for you), and then bought the rest of what I needed in Reno (which you CAN do). Anything I had leftover I gave to other burners who could use it before my flight back.
      • Re: I am getting a lot of information

fun socks (at least one pair, hopefully two per day)
        big fun comfy boots

slippers or something of the like around camp

and please god, don't forget the bag balm and vinegar...
wash your feet at least twice a day with the vinegar (hence two pairs of socks and i found a little spray bottle of 3/4 vinegar 1/4 water makes it simple), make sure to rinse the vinegar pretty well, dry and apply a thin layer of bag balm or what ever else type of "balm" you like.

happy feet, naps, and water makes bm all the better!!!!

Thare are dozens of spots to go in Reno to find everything you need from some snappy outfits to toiletries (sp.?) to slot machines.
Well I gues you may not need the last one but it is there if you need it.
        just saying.....
Does anybody remember the name of that surplus store? That place kicked so much ass it wasn't even funny. I think they even had like a ride share out to the Playa that left from there.
