OH MY FUCKING GOD THAT HURT LIKE A SONOFABITCH!
Okay... now that I got that out of my system... IT ROCKS!
I went for the American Brazilian (translation: Bald). I learned something about myself I did not know. I have unruly hair that goes all different directions and does not want to be ripped out for nothin. The technician was totally cool, she was diligent in trying to get it all. It hurt like hell, but she was very good about telling me what she was doing and explaining why she was waxing the same place over and over. It didn't feel nearly as eeeewwwww as I thought it would. Once I got over the fact that this woman was touching my bits it wasn't such a big deal. She clearly sees them all the time, and she chatted away as if it were nothing, so it put me at ease. I didn't even feel too weird when she used the tweezers to get the little ones the wax missed. I just lied back and looked at the ceiling and did what she told me to do. It took about 45 minutes... I'm not kidding, they were stubborn suckers. It really fucking hurt. I took two Motrin beforehand but didn't have time for a glass of wine. I'm having one now though! Two actually.
Anyway... thanks ladies for all the previous discussions we've had about waxing and cleaning up the bits. I remembered everything you all said and look forward being smooth and carefree on the playa this year!
Woo woo!

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 7:45 PMI'm going in for a simple bikini line/cleanup session tomorrow...not nearly as ouchy as what you did, especially after doing it for about two years. I once asked my aesthetician (I've been going to the same one for that long) about the awkwardness of getting the Brazilian, since she says she has the ladies on all fours for part of it. She said she just treats it like anything else, as if it's nowhere special. And yes--crazy how the little hairs grow in ways I never knew!
Congrats on your first Brazilian--I'm not a totally-bare-there girl myself, but I do know how good it feels to do something nice for yourself :)

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 8:09 PMaww glad that is was as pleasant experience that is possible.
I got what they call a "Playboy" yesterday morning (small triangle at top, waxed labia and all the way back). I got my last wax 6 weeks ago so this time was no sweat compared to waiting a year. I find I have to give it a couple days to "heal". I end up with a bit of scabbing and soreness so I wanted to make sure I was all good before I got on the RV (and good for last minute booty from the BF who is not going to BM).
I'm packing a tweezer for upkeep. Totally better than dealing with razor burn and a 5 o'clock shadow of the crotch. -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 8:29 PMI thought about leaving a patch or airstrip, but my bush up top ain't as bushy as it used to be so I went for the whole magilla. Otherwise I don't think it would have looked right. I'm a little concerned about it being bumpy or looking 'fresh'. I have Vitamin E oil I'm using to keep it moisturized and help the 'healing' process. I'm open to better recommendations! I figure Vitamin E can only be good, right? -

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 9:03 PMFor red and bumpy, smear on a litte CortAid or other hydrocortisone cream. Helps lots with the irritation.
You are so brave for doing the whole kit and caboodle the first time! -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 9:25 PMOooh... I have hydrocortisone... I'll use it! Thanks!
And not so sure about brave... more like "must do this grin and bear it". Hey, if I can survive a week on the playa, what's a little hair ripping? -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 7:17 AMAlso- make sure to exfoliate!
I can't much do the waxing....way too sensitive...

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 8:54 PMYAY!! it's the BEST! just a little wordy word of advice -- I've been doing it for about 7 years now and I don't wear undies for about a day after --- it helps keep the irritation down. Make sure not to pick at it when it starts growing in too.
No more grass on the field!! ha.ha. -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 9:24 PMI should be exfoliating too, right? Will one of those nylon shower scrunchy things do the trick? Will that help so it doesn't grow in all funky? The idea of having something to 'pick at' has me a little freaked. -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 9:42 PMI think she's referring to ingrown hairs...the ONLY complaint I have with waxing. Since I don't wax the little girl, I use a product called TendSkin, which helps a lot in keeping ingrowns away. I DON'T think you're supposed to use it on "sensitive skin" which I think refers to labia, etc. The nylon shower scrunchies don't do shit from my experience; I have a straight-up loofah and scrub away. I don't imagine you'd want to do this to your bits but then again, one nasty ingrown hair can be excruciating if it's in the wrong place.
-
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 23, 2006 - 10:49 PMI've used Tend Skin before for a brazilian. A washcloth can do a pretty good job of exfoliating too. I concur with the no undies thing though. -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 5:45 AMGoin commando today. Feels weird, but worth it. And the hydrocortizone helped quite a bit.
-
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 9:21 AMI use Tend Skin on the lady bits after every wax. No problem. And a STRONG (ie hard and rough) loofah.

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 7:46 AMI just got waxed for probably the 5th time yesterday - in what I now know is referred to as a "playboy" (thanks, ladies).
If it's any consolation, Dusty, it hurts less after the first time.
But the frontal bush area is more painful than the undersides and typical bikini line so if you do it again I recommend leaving some bush. -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 8:05 AMAhh... that's the problem... not much frontal bush to begin with so that was the easy part to get rid of. If I left a little triangle, it would've looked silly. I look forward to it hurting less the next time! -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 1:06 PMGoing for mine tonight! I also have hair that grows in every direction. My waxer said that it was really no big deal as she just saw it as a new challenge. eeek... she does use the blue wax which hurts FAR less than the pink.
Iris, did you go to Margie?
And I like to leave a little "throw rug" myself... -
-

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 1:31 PMonce you get used to it, it's also pretty easy to do it yourself, especially for touch-ups. I recommend 'Surgi-Wax' which is easy because you just heat it in the microwave and it doesn't require any strips of fabric...just spread it on, wait for it to dry and pull!
happy waxing, ladies! :)

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 2:23 PMA "throw rug"??? hee-hee-hee - ha-ha-ha
Ivy, you kill me! -

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 5:18 PMA note to the exfoliators! It's absolutely necessary to exfoliate but I've found the best way that doesnt hurt the girly stuff but keeps the ingrowns to a minimum is one of those little round facial brushes (Sephora has them for about $5) and the same stuff I use to cleanse my face. Works wonders! Yay for coochie waxing! I go on Monday. Cant wait to be fuzz-free again. -

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 7:35 PMGAH.... I can't believe I actually pay someone to rip out my pubic hair.
But its over now and I no longer have the Black Forest growing down there. Nice and bare... except for my lil "throw rug". ;-) I actually had her leave it slightly larger this time. Last time it was this teeny tiny little strip. Hardly seemed worth it. However, now my ass cheeks are stuck together.
Where's the baby oil???? -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 10:22 PM"However, now my ass cheeks are stuck together. "
So it's not just me! I looked tonite and thought 'wtf is that? a bruise?"
No, just leftover wax. -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 11:03 PMOh my god. I'm crying with laughter. Thank you! Throw rug and the ass cheeks stuck together almost offed me. Thank you!

Fri, August 25, 2006 - 10:09 PMI was going to and then I got nervous doing anything different right before the burn (I've had bad reactions to certain waxes) . . . but I am keeping her info because I would love to try out the blue wax. (this time didn't really hurt at all so I'm all good).
It's all about the throw rug . . . unfortunately they waxed more of the rug than I prefer but oh well.

Post Burn Brazilian Update
Fri, September 8, 2006 - 3:19 PMOkay, I'm hooked.

As Goddess is my witness, I will never go bushy again!
Praise to the wax! -

Re: Post Burn Brazilian Update
Fri, September 8, 2006 - 4:46 PMhey y'all! i haven't had much time to spend on tribe but started nosing around here and i'm totally getting a kick out of this!
i'm an esthetician of 5 years and working in the bay area. should totally get you all over for a waxing soiree sometime! i throw them periodically for the last year and it's a lot of fun. you get to try waxing at a really reduced price and then sip cocktails and hang out with all the other waxing victims.
coupla things i would recommend when you go in for waxing. to avoid walking out with your pants stuck in your waxy bits, bring a blend of oil to rub on. many salons use a mineral oil base (i know, i've worked in many of them and they go with the cheapest thing available) mineral oil will clog your pores and cause ingrowns. mix about 6 drops of lavender and 6 drops of tea tree oil per ounce of grapeseed. the oil will remove the wax, lavender will soothe irritation and tea tree will provide a protection from bacteria. i always show everyone how to do this and you get get the oils at cost through me. also, i wrote an article for blogher with regard to waxing that gives you a ton of info. here's the article: blogher.org/topic/fashion-shopping just scroll down and look for the article from spa diva on the truth about waxing. hope this helps!
i'm thinking about doing a happy hour waxing soiree on a friday night very soon for those who are interested!
glad to see y'all are taking care of the bits. something pretty refreshing about it eh? hee! -

Re: Post Burn Brazilian Update
Fri, September 8, 2006 - 7:11 PMUgh, after my last waxing I had my pants stuck to my butthole. Awesome. Came home and rubbed olive oil all over my girl bits and was fine. No ingrowns or breakouts, either.

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 24, 2006 - 10:44 PMHahahah.... I went today... the worst is when you wipe yourself after peeing and get a huge chunk of TP stuck to some mystery wax left over. Definitely exfoliate starting about 3 days after you wax every time you shower with a firm scrubber or a scrubbing towel, press hard enough to actually exfoliate your skin and you should be free and clear of ingrowns. Tend skin also works nicely.
There's also something we should all be aware of with waxing: bacterial folliculitis. This is an infection of the follicle that can happen at any waxing place whether or not it's clean. I've been waxing my legs and bikini for over 7 years and it happened to me once. Red bumps appear in certain areas that turn into little pimple looking pustules. I had to go on 3 weeks of oral antibiotics as well as skin creams. To avoid this ever happening to you (as my dermatologist suggested) make sure when you go in to get waxed that your skin is relatively clean (don't work out, etc, before hand and even shower before) and after if it's possible take a shower with anti-microbial cleanse that doctors use (like pre-surgical scrubs such as Hibiclens).
I just thought I should mentiont that experience since we're talkin 'bout waxing. It's relatively uncommon but as my dermatologist said, once it happens to you, you'll never let it happen again.
Happy waxing! It's time to get dusty, I'm off in less than 24 hours!

Homemade Tendskin
Thu, September 14, 2006 - 9:04 AMThough the original page seems to be defunct, I found a copy of a recipe that works as well as tendskin for less money. Last year I passed this on to some women who work at the Lusty Lady and the next time I saw them they told me that the whole crew there used it now and that I'd done everyone a great favor!
Forgive me if it's been posted before.
So, here is the original text from Bonne Casey:
Homemade TendSkin Recipe and Review
September 2004
For those of you who don’t know what Tendskin is, let me learn you. It is a miracle product for skin. It is marketed as a treatment for ingrown hairs and razor burn, which it treats beautifully. We have discovered that it is also the answer to smooth, perfectly clear skin.
I had never heard of it before until a couple years ago when a friend of mine got it from her salon. She used it happily, and kept paying the $20 for a 4oz bottle. The only place I could it from was Sephora, which they still sell it there. If you want a bigger bottle, the 8oz, you will pay $35.00. We don’t like the price but we love the results.
Tendskin is called a lotion, but it really a true liquid. You pour it on a cotton pad and swipe it over anywhere that is red, irritated, acne prone or anywhere that needs skin to be removed. Wait a few hours or go to bed, and the next thing you know, you’re fixed. After a couple of days, the results are even more dramatic. I have never met anyone who has tried it that did not gain results.
What makes Tendskin so miraculous? It’s a very simple product, actually. The ingredients are:
Isopropyl Alcohol - which is normal 70% alcohol you buy at the store
Water - you know what this is.
Propylene Glycol - this is just a stabilizer to keep it from freezing or melting
Acetylsalicylate - this is a form of salicylic acid, or good old aspirin. This is what makes it go.
Glycerin - a very basic skin protectant helps keep skin moist
Cyclomethicone - a form of silicone, also to help it glide over skin and give “slip”
So essentially it’s just alcohol and aspirin. Simple, huh? And they charge $20 for a puny 4oz and a pretty cobalt blue plastic bottle. Well, we are beating the system today my friends because I am going to enlighten you as to how to make your own Tendskin that works JUST AS WELL.
The total recipe will cost you about $3 (depending on if you have to buy bottles) versus the $20 plus shipping elsewhere. This recipe will make 8 oz. You should have enough left over to make 2 batches.
What you need:
Uncoated aspirin
70% alcohol
Witch Hazel
A measuring cup/bottle
2 bottles used to shake mixtures
1 8oz or more bottle/container to keep finished product
What you do:
1. Pour 5.5oz of 70% alcohol into one bottle.
2. Drop 18 uncoated aspirins into the alcohol. Cap bottle and shake.
3. Pour 2.5oz of witch hazel into the second bottle.
4. Drop 8 uncoated aspirins into the witch hazel. Cap bottle and shake.
5. Wait awhile (30 minutes to a whole day) for the aspirins to dissolve in the liquids. Shake periodically to help dissolve aspirin and mix. NOTE: not all of the aspirin will dissolve. That’s ok- some of it never will.
6. Now combine both the alcohol and witch hazel mixtures together into one bottle. Make sure you shake it up before you pour them out so you also get the aspirin residue into the new bottle.
This last bottle is your Tendskin! Use 1-2 a day. Reduce usage if you experience dryness or flaking or irritation. DO NOT USE IF YOU ARE ALLERGIC TO ASPIRIN. Make sure you shake it well before each use.
Some great uses for Tendskin:
Acne
Boils
Ingrown Hairs
Razor Burn
Exfoliation
Remove self tanner
Toner
After any hair removal
I use it twice a day on my face after cleansing to make sure I have removed all makeup and to prevent breakouts. Since the acetylsalicylate is actually a mild exfoliant, it leaves my skin super soft. I also use it to prevent razor burn in various places. I like this homemade version better because it is less smelly than the original.
There is another product I found at Sally’s called No Bump Rx, which is almost identical to Tendskin, same size, for only $7.00. I also have this product so I could compare the 3. Works the same as the others, but this one has the worst smell. You decide which one to try.
I have made up batches and given them to family members and they have also had wonderful results. My friend who first discovered Tendskin has now also switched to making her own homemade version and is just as happy as before. Try it yourself.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I find that it has a little bite to it, but it's quickly overcome by the aspirin. 5.5 ounces is 11 Tablespoons or a between 2/3 and 3/4 of a cup. 2.5 ounces is 5 tablespoons or a little over 1/3 of a cup. I go for the tablespoons because it's more accurate.
Anyway, I hope this info is useful to someone.
:^D -

Re: Homemade Tendskin
Thu, September 14, 2006 - 9:18 AMThis is awesome! Thank you thank you thank you! I will make for sure make some for myself. Do you think it would be too strong for pre-teen acne? I'm wondering if young skin might be too sensitive. -
-
Re: Homemade Tendskin
Thu, September 14, 2006 - 10:08 AMnot good for all over the face but spot treatment. the alcohol will strip her skin and cause the condition to become worse. witch hazel and tea tree would be good. also aloe rocks. it's a natural antiseptic and will soothe inflammation. in fact, putting some aloe in the nether regions isn't a bad idea if you get severely red. some people will bleed because their roots are so large. but buy good aloe that doesn't have fragrance or artificial coloring and preservatives. you can find some at your natural health food stores.
-
Re: Homemade Tendskin
Thu, September 14, 2006 - 11:31 AMI think it depends on how widespread the acne is...Johnson and Johnson has this stuff called Clean and Clear Invisible Blemish treatment. It's pretty much the same thing, Salicylic acid, only it's more of a gel and forms a thin layer over the zit. It's good for individual zits and ingrown hairs.
The above recipe is a lot more of a liquid and better for a broader treatment. But I'd say try it out... It might dry out their skin if they overdo it, but similar stuff is sold as acne medication anyway so it's worth a shot.

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Mon, September 18, 2006 - 7:47 PMWell I'm due in a couple of weeks for my second one. Not happy that I'm having to let it grow in just so I can get it ripped out. But in a strange way, I'm kinda looking forward to it. Oh no, I think I've become a little twisted... sorta looking forward to the pain and all. Next thing you know I'll be getting tatoos, just for the pleasure of the pain. Eeeeek. -

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Tue, September 19, 2006 - 10:00 AMheh... going in for my 3rd touch up today... i get the twisted thing, alothough I have to keep myself from going near any piercing parlors, as I'll get something done just to get it done, then take it out 2 months later 'cus I don't actually want it. Waxing is a much better use of my time and money.
that and after it's gone I really don't want it back. Neither does my husband, go figure.

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Fri, January 25, 2008 - 9:35 PMbumpity bump.
There was another thread I can't find. I don't remember the title of it - but it was likely not long before this one started!
I asked about the logistics of waxing because I was naive about how one actually postures themselves to get their punani waxed, what to wear, and how to deal with the exposure. It turned into a great thread and I, personally, appreciate the frankness of that conversation to this day.
Does anyone remember that thread? If you come across it, please bump it. It's got some gems :-)

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 9:12 PMDusty,
Don't recall that thread, BUT I can tell you that my esthetician is super rad and we talk about relationships (hers and mine) the entire time. This helps with the "feeling exposed" stuff.
I never wear undies. Skirts, yes.
Oh wait, duh- the old entries are from '06.
**smacks forehead.
As to what people were talking about with Tendskin... YES! and I also use an exfoliating washcloth.
I think I get an allergic reaction to the wax-removal oils, as I had a horrible rash for about two days afterwards. Ugh.
My salon uses really good natural oils, but I think I'm just sensitive. Anyone else get this?
And, who is your fave brazilian waxer and why?
Mine is April Pierman at Spa Pierman in Chico. Why? She uses good wax (all hard- the green stuff, so she doesn't go over me a ton and it goes fast) and she charges only $50.
The salon three blocks from me? $85. And it takes FOREVER, and they suck at it.
The Pretty Kitty in San Diego was good too. $35, took 15 minutes.
Is there anything like that in SF?

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, February 21, 2008 - 7:24 AMThis year will be my first Burning Man and I would LOVE to not have to deal with hair/shaving/touching up... things like that. I really wanna try the Brazilian (the American one) but not sure how to go about finding a good place to get it done. Any suggestions on finding a reputable place? I want to find a place that isn't gonna make me cry or scar me for life.. lol.
Thanks for this thread guys..... love having a place to talk bout things like this :)

Thu, February 21, 2008 - 3:07 PMTiffany - where do you live? If it's anywhere in the Bay Area I recommend contacting Strawberry. She does a bunch of us in the area and is phenomenal!
I actually have stopped using Tend Skin. It just doesn't do enough for me. I now use Kiss My Face lotion which has 5% alpha-hydroxy in it. I put a little bit on twice a day and my ingrowns and skin have never looked better! -

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 3:56 PMI've been shaving my bits for about 12 years. Not a single ingrown hair, and my pubic hair is so fine and sparse, I don't have a problem with it growing back and being spikey. Is there a reason I should wax or Brazil or tweeze, etc., if this is working for me? -
-
Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, February 28, 2008 - 5:27 PMBy all means no! If whatever you're doing makes you happy, and you're comfortable with it, there's no need to do anything else! Many of us aren't as fortunate with our shaving experience. It grows in itchy and stubbly, or we get nasty shaving bumps. Waxing is a good alternative if you have that kind of problem. But lucky you sista! If it ain't broke, don't fix it! -

i have an appointment for my first brazillian the day before i leave for the burn. honestly, i'm still feeling chicken about the whole thing because i'm not a fan of pain.
but there's some really great advice on this thread that's helping to psyche my up.
anyone have suggestions for a good amount of time to get waxed before hitting the playa? i see some comments about potential ingrown hairs (sounds like a nightmare while bike riding for 7 days!) and rashes...

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, July 29, 2009 - 8:44 AMOh Baby, DON'T do it THE DAY BEFORE, truly, if ya go 5 days before it has a chance to not be sooooo very sensitve. I've been doin this for YEARS and my experience has been for a day or two after the skin is a little tender, ya dont wanna go out to the desert with a freshly snatched snatch! tryly, have it done a few days before... you'll still be smooth,. its lasts awhile. Do pack the tweezers for the little hairs that didnt get waxed, though.. and NO vit E, it will clog the pores and cause the bumps, YES to the Hydrocortisone though, it really helps take the "sting" out of the skin afterwards..
Enjoy your smoothiness,
"Bare, resisting the urge to ask if she can feel Dusty's new wax" ;)
see ya all soon

Thu, August 13, 2009 - 4:11 PMhi bare. i had an appt with lucia in berkeley (google her and you'll see rave reviews) but I just just changed it to cody at herringbone in berkeley because 2 friends declared i must go there if it's my first time.
also, i'm kinda chickening out a bit - decided to get the extended bikini instead of brazillian. i wanted to see how that goes before committing to the whole enchilda.
my appt is 8/27 - eeek!

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 4:57 PMSo I'm all about the Brazilian at the salon, but i wondered if anyone had experience with leg waxing? Just wondering if I should save my money and do it at home or if it's really worth paying someone.
Thanks :) -

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Wed, August 12, 2009 - 6:25 PMI think it depends on just how course and hairy your legs are. If you have rather fine hair on your legs, like me, I'm happy with Nair or shaving or these cool little 'As Seen on TV' sandpaper like pads I found that kinda sloughs off the hair. But back when I had courser hair on my legs, I swore by leg waxing. I'd do it 2-3 times each summer and it worked like a charm.
It's generally not terribly expensive, I'd just do my lower leg. I never got ingrown hairs, and it always grew back softer than before. I tried doing it myself at home and never could quite get it right. I spent the money on products and it was such a pain in the ass, I never really used it. For $40 it's worth going to a salon. And if you do it at the same time as your punani wax, sometimes they'll discount.
All waxing though, no matter where, hurts like a sonofabitch. So the rule still applies... two advil and a glass of wine beforehand... or was that one advil and two glasses of wine? Ah hell, just pop a bottle of each and you'll be fine. -

Re: Got my first Brazilian tonite.
Thu, August 13, 2009 - 4:37 AMI've been getting Brazilians as long as I can remember and about a year ago I decided to do them myself. First, I tried the old school honey wax w/ muslin strips method w/ nightmarish results. I have an aesthetician pal who uses the Cirepil Blue self hardening wax and I tried it and loved it. Also, while the wax strips are hardening, I get some light housecleaning done. ;)
