Foot!
Apparently getting this very painful tendon thing in the back and heel of the foot is common as you get older. Mine started 3 years ago and it SUCKS. I was told aside from cortisone shots not much to be done.
Anyone else here have this? how do you cope with all the walking on the playa? Sadly my awesome boots just aggravate it. What shoes hurt the least for you?

Re: a pain in the ....
Sat, August 1, 2009 - 7:05 AMI've had pain from time to time in my achilles tendons for 10 years. It gets worse when there is a lot of walking, but I still go hiking and dance. Here's what seems to help for me:
1. Stretching. Various yoga poses gently stretch the legs.
2. Massage. Mostly for the calves. Self-massage if you're on your own.
3. Water. Getting dehydrated makes it worse.
4. Ibuprofen.

Sat, August 1, 2009 - 10:09 AMPlantar fascitis. There's LOTS you can do for it.
I got expensive insoles for my playa boots last year and they helped a lot.
Stretches: roll a tennis ball under your foot when you wake up in the morning. Also, take a towel or an exercise band, wrap it around your toes and pull up. P.F. tends to get worse overnight, as your tendon tightens up. I had best luck using the stretches in the morning.
If you don't have reasonable health care, people in dedicated running stores are actually really good at helping you find footbeds that work. -

Re: a pain in the ....
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 7:24 PMYes my friends who are runners showed me the correct stretch and OMG its working! my right foot hurts so I prop the right foot up at a sharp angle (they had a special tool but a wood bock with a sharp angle worked for me) then my left leg forward and standing straight. The calf muscle gets all tight and it is stretching the tendon out :-) I am doing this daily in the morning at work and at night and I feel so much better already. -

Re: a pain in the ....
Thu, August 6, 2009 - 3:26 PMI've had PF and various painful tendons around the ankle for a couple of years now. The things I do that help are: wear arch support insoles in all my shoes (even the cheap Dr Scholls ones help) and my house slippers, icing the bottom of my foot and ankle, stretching constantly! You can also use athletic tape on your arch to give some support if your shoes don't work with insoles (like sandals). If it's flaring up, I often do this at night so I don't wake up with it worse and I have arch support if I get up in the middle of the night.
It can be hard on the playa with so much walking and bike riding, but I stretch pretty much any time I'm standing for more than 10 minutes and make sure to rest my feet as much as I can. I've also had to give up some really cute shoes for practicality sake.
Good luck!

Re: a pain in the ....
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 10:31 AMI had a severe case of PF about a dozen years ago. Got the good custom arch inserts and they helped...a lot! To the point now where I haven't had to use them for several years but I always look for good arch supported shoes and have to avoid heels.

Re: a pain in the ....
Sat, August 1, 2009 - 11:55 AMI have this problem too. It definitely helps to stretch a lot...little stretches, like just lifting your toes while you are sitting or putting the top of your foot on a curb or wall and leaning forward.
Foot problems have led me to care less about what shoes look like and more about how they feel. I'm kinda sad about that, but it is what it is.

Re: a pain in the ....
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 1:07 PMI am one that can't do the really, coooool big chunky platform boots - my feet just won't put up with them for long!
My favorite boots are black, short, have a flat sole, a zip up side closure and make my feet very, very happy running around on the playa! They are just like tennis shoes!! I buy them at Big 5 sporting goods. The brand name is RG. On sale, they are around $27 bucks. They come in both women's and men's sizes, but I've found some stores don't carry the women's. :(
There is also a beefier version - looks the same, but costs more.
I posted a picture in the BW gallery.
I wouldn't go to the playa without them!!
