Hola ladies!
Have any of you been to the playa for 4th of July?
I have to miss burning man this year, and maybe even the next three years :( because I'm going back to school :)
Well maybe not the next three years....but this year I have some sort of silly mandatory orientation so I have to go. I'm also planning on getting out the country for a month or two before school starts to travel. I was thinking about sticking around til 4th of July so that I could have my playa time this year...but I've never been for the 4th of July gathering so I was wondering if anyone had any personal experience. whats it like out there that weekend? Are there still larger camps and a map or is it really informal? Are there a lot of people that go>? is there any art? Whats it like?

Re: 4th of July on the Playa
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:15 AMIt's very informal...no planned big camps the way there are during BM. Personally I liked it almost more than BM because you really get to experience the desert itself, which is pretty amazing. And where we camped was a different playa than where BM is often held, and the winds were not nearly as strong.
All in all, a great experience. Wish I was going again this year :( -

Re: 4th of July on the Playa
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:47 AMI too want to go to this but as it is so informal how do we know if we are going to the right place? Who has info? It's all pack it in pack it out right? Even your own potty I assume.
Need more info!! Inquiring minds want to know!!!! -

Re: 4th of July on the Playa
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 11:02 AMyes yes....there is a 4th of JuPlaya tribe....but there havent really been any recent posts on it related to this year. From what I read online...it seems like its a couple hundred people and everyone camps kinda far away from each other? And yeah, Bring your own Potty. I was reading that some people from Sacramento brought some potties out there and split the cost until it came out to about $20 per person.
I really really really want to go but I dont know if I can find enough people to go with.....Shall we try to organize some sort of informal camp? Oooh it would be really fun to have a Burning Woman Tribe camp ><

Re: 4th of July on the Playa
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 5:02 PMHmmm...I don't have much input on 4th of JuPlaya, but I can tell you that I was going to school all 4 years I've been to Burning Man (2004-07). Yeah, they give you that line about mandatory this and that, but I just contacted all my instructors and handled all the "mandatory" requirements before I left. Of course I didn't tell them WHY I wouldn't be there for orientation or the first day of class, but they probably wouldn't have cared, anyway. Also, I went to State, not Stanford - so maybe that made a difference.
Here - If you're curious, I just found a sample email. I've never had any problems, but I totally understand that you may want to stick around, just to make sure everything goes smoothly. And I do hear that 4th of JuPlaya is lots of fun, less chaotic than the big event, and more intimate.
sample email:
Dear Professor Blah blah,
My name is MoLes and I am currently enrolled in your BUS 101 class for Fall 2007, Monday nights from 7-10p.m. I just wanted to introduce myself, touch base, and let you know that I'm very excited to be taking your course! I graduate at the end of this semester and I'm determined to finish on a high note.
I'd also like to give you advance notice that I will not be able to attend the first class session (August 27). Unfortunately I am out of town that entire week. I'd like to respectfully request that you please do not drop me from the class. I fully intend to be in class for the remainder of the semester. I am a diligent student that enjoys class participation and I hope you will not hold the first day absence against me.
To mitigate the missed class/study time, I was hoping to get a leg up on the schoolwork that will be required. Do you have any suggestions you could pass along? Perhaps fill me in on what reading I could be doing before class starts on the 27th?
I noticed from your web page that the text from the summer session was International Organizational Behavior, 2nd edition, by Francesco and Gold, (2005), NJ: Pearson/Prentice Hall. Is that the book we'll be using, as well? I also saw that the first assignment was to read chapters 1 and 2. Please let me know if my assumptions are correct and I will make it a point to read those chapters before I leave town so I can be prepared for the next class. If you'd like, I am available to meet with you any evening prior to the start of class, if necessary.
Thanks for your consideration. I look forward to meeting you soon.
Best Regards,
MoLes -

Re: 4th of July on the Playa
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 5:51 PMWow...that is a beautifully written letter~!
I completely plan on ditching school next year and the year after to go the burn....but somehow I feel like since this is gonna be my first year in law school I should probably go to class. I seem to have heard something about the first year being hard or some shit ;p I'm not going to be going to Stanford or anything, but USF is a really small private school....and if the crazy girl with the pink hair and big earings misses the first couple days of class and then shows up during week two....I have a feeling people would notice. Do they care or not...well thats whole other issue.
I had this other idea two....for my second year of law school, to just tell em that I'm going off to do some really highly important first amendment human rights pro bono work that was vital to my career. I dont plan on lieing either....Ive been thinking for a long time about the whole cops/illegal searches on the playa thing...and I think that a pretty good partial solution to the problem would be to make like...picket signs and stick em into the playa outside your camp. the signs would be lit up at night, and would contain a beautiful yet to be perfectly written message that would go something along the lines of, "No, you do NOT have permission to enter my camp. Please ring the bell (see cowbell attached) and you might get to speak to a live person" -

Re: 4th of July on the Playa
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 8:12 PMI LOVE the 4th on the playa.
Pack everything (including potties) in and out.
Hit up the springs, drive around, say hello to new people.
It's quiet, its lovely, and usually, there's a fantastic fireworks show. (Last year's show def. trumped the man's) -

Re: 4th of July on the Playa
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 3:08 PMYeah, last year's fireworks were awesome when the dust storms weren't kicking our asses! Was the guy's name Wayne, I think? Super nice guy.
No drum circles. No oonsa oonsa (unless you wanna go find some). You can actually appreciate the raw beauty of the desert. And I can tool around in my dune buggy as fast as I want! Woot! -

Re: 4th of July on the Playa
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 10:19 AMI'm an undergraduate at USF, and will for the last time before I graduate, be missing the second week of school to go to Burningman. Every year, I've gone to the first day of classes and appologised to my professors for missing the next week. I always tell them that I'll be out of town for something I can't reschedule, and would like to make up the work before I go. I've never had a problem. One year, a professor knew why I'd be gone because he was going too! Law school may be different, and I don't know what I'll do when it comes to grad school yet. -

Re: 4th of July on the Playa
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 9:46 PM4th of Juplaya! yeeeeee
Last year, we hung out around Frog Pond... many lovely people were there, drums, drinks, good food & all!
Fireworks were incredible. Oh, oh, & the stars! & the moon! You are so excited, you just don't know it yet! (:
Only advice, bring sunscreen, & LEAVE A BLINKY ON YOUR CAMP & use landmarks! at night!! I cannot stress that enough, we drove around for hours trying to find our camp, found it by almost running into it. :O
Hope to see you out there! Ziggy & myself will be out at Frog pond once again this year (:
