Bump.
Welp, if we're advertising, I'll put myself out there too.

I've been doing hair for BM since 2007, but have been making synthetic dreads since 2005. You'll find my dread wigs & falls for sale inside Prism Magic Company the month of August. My cards are inside The Melting Pot.
I do custom orders & braid locally here in Reno. I charge $120 for dreads that are lower back length, $100 for mid back/boobie length, & $75 for shoulder length (Price includes braiding).
I am also on Couchsurfers, so if you need a place to crash on your way to the playa, there should be room for ya.

for the last three years I have been thinking of having my real hair dreaded and keeping it that way for awhile. When I do nothing with my hair (as opposed to obsessing on it) on the playa it dreads all by itself within 24 hours.

I am not sure how acceptable it will be at my very conservative government job.. I know they can't fire me for my hair and as long as I keep the dreads neat and clean I think once they get over the initial surprise they'll forget about it.

Then I have gone the other extreme and thought about choping off all my locks and going short spikey with color in the tips of some sort. Of course I could do both with the dreads first for a while (a few years) and then chop them off so the hair is short. Either way...I feel like it's a commitment of at least going short if I don't like the dreads..hence my hesitation on the whole idea.

but ladies...I absolutely cannot wait to see all the hair fashion out there this year...it will be delightful to see!

bobby pins! cut the ribbon double long, and tie it in a knot at the loop in the bobby pin. Stick the bobby pin into your braid at the top, and weave the ribbon in. Here is a great example http://realmofvenus.renaissanceitaly.net/yourgarb/2004/hair.jpg

I was thinking of wearing my hair in two twin french braids. I will be able to easily redo them if they get messed up or if I need to wash my hair. Has anyone ever french braided ribbon into their hair before? If so, how do you secure the ribbon so it won't slip out?

If you are confident to DIY or have a friend who can braid, you can always buy spun Aussie wool instead of yarn and have wool dreads which are even more light weight than felted ones - and because the exchange rate to the AUD is so good it would be less than $50 USD for enough to cover a full head very happily! 2-3 skeins is recommended. See: http://wildilocks.com/webstore/index.php?currency=USD&main_page=product_info&cPath=37_33&products_id=101 for more info :)

It depends on how long my hair is at the time. I've had short hair, which was really the easiest to deal with, and just wore hats, bandanas and scarves. When it was longer, I braided it myself but took it out after a few days because the itching was driving me mad! This year, it will either be pretty short or long enough for pigtails, in which case I will probably make some falls.

I wash my hair every 2-3 days with a pitcher of water and a plastic washtub on my knees. It feels GREAT and I always do it in the hottest part of the day so it cools me off. I spray on leave-on conditioner and cover it back up again.

Fresh hair? I keep hearing how hot it is, and how disgusting you'll get, blah blah blah. I was thinking the more I tried to mess with my hair (weight, clips...ummmm ?) the worse it'd be. Plus, my hair's too short for add-ons.

As far as I know. I have some super long yarn fall thingies, but my friend made them for me not knowing I'd cut my hair!

(I used to have long hair, and lots of fun things to put in it. Then I cut it all off. And I'm growing out bangs. They should be reasonable by Sept.)

I'm going to test run some dry shampooing (http://playabound.wordpress.com), but I'm definitely looking forward to all the fun stuff y'all do/put in your hair.

spritz sunscreen is a little too dispersive for me. i prefer the old old school tube so you can rub it along the parts. unless you have thin hair in general, in which case spritz sunscreen is a good idea, so you can hit your whole scalp. a hat, or a do-rag, is never a bad idea during the brightest hours of the day IMO.

speaking of hats, make sure you have your hair done in whatever style you're wearing for the playa before shopping for headgear. my braids (I used embroidery thread to augment my own hair's braids) added a hat size and then some. i used lots of white thread to show up under black lights.

for anyone prone to hair loss, be aware that adding a lot of weight to your braids/etc will tug your hair out at a faster rate. either way, when you take your braids out, you will see a ton of lost hair, but much of that is the hair you would normally lose every day, that can't fall out because it's been trapped by the braids.

and if you've never had your hair in braids, it will itch your scalp at some point, either because it's tight in the beginning (until it grows a bit and then it will loosen) or because you're not washing it as much, or both. i liked to have a light oil to rub along my scalp when it itched to soothe it. i found one from aveeda that was tingly...i think it had peppermint in it? anyway, just something to consider.

I put m y hair in a bun w/some conditioner, plop a wool fall on that pup, and add a cotton visor in the day. At night I add a scart or a cool headband. Been doing this for 3 years and it works out great, and I take the bun out at night and sleep w/fresh hair.

I'm hoping my bangs will be long enough to braid back - I'm actually wondering what to do with my hair. I can go without washing my body for days and days, but my hair gets so greasy and flat and itchy and...I'm worried about weight and heat, with pretty things.

Headthong is brilliant. I'm always seeing those crazy teeny things with one neat thing on the crotch, wishing they were oh, 23 times larger!

I've been pondering this question recently actually. i did the fake-hair multicolored braids a few years ago and that worked infinitely better than my 'not a damn thing' for this last year and a bit better than my mohawk of the previous year, but the type of synthetic hair we used doesn't like being in hair longer than two weeks before it starts to bond.

i'm planning to do dpw for a handful of weeks pre-burn so i've been trying to find a longer-than-one-week option. any suggestions?
i have thin, fine, hair that doesn't like to dred but will turn into a huge not faster than it takes to get through greeters.

if anyone is looking for good fake hair- ragdolly has great colors

You want something a little more 'burneresque' to prevent sunburn on your scalp from the part in your hair, and jazz up those little buns or pigtails at the same time? Make yourself a Headthong [patent pending]. Yes, that same little thong that protects the goodies down below can also protect the goodies up above. Decorate the patch cover with any non-moopy flair of your choice, and slip the thong on. Here, uber self-made playa fashionista supa model Dove sports a lovely blue maribu number...

I kept it simple the year I went I just put my hair into two buns and then put a bandana over it. It would be fun to have something a little more burnneresque this year, but if I dont find a job after my temp job is over in July I am going to be cutting all extra cost for BM and going bare minimum style.

I braided my hair with yarn for 3 years, and last year switched to wool dreads. I wore my hair down, during the day simple braids and a hat. At night a wig sometimes, and others, put it up in little buns with wool dreads. So Much Better than having to deal with yarn wrapped braids! Granted, I LOVED LOVED LOVED my braids, because they were easy to wash, I didn't have to deal with hair tangles or anything, and they were super cute. But, it took tons of time, and expense pre and post playa, not to mention the stress on my scalp. So last year, I made some wool dreads and probably wore them half the time. This year I plan to make another set in other colors, and wear them again. I liked the freedom of not having my hair all bundled up during the day, but not having to fuss with it at night. Yup, I'm sold on the dreads. I didn't do the 'installed' dreads... mine were attached to a band so I could take them out easily and put them on anytime I wanted.

corn rows arent too hard to sleep in, esp if you only use your own hair. Adding in fake hair is what makes it itch. The trouble with corn rows on playa is that youre going to have to put sunscreen between each row, or get burned in the parts. Also, with corn rows, you will need to sleep with a silky do-rag to keep the rows from getting fuzzy. And of course, the day after you get rows done, you will feel like you had a facelift. I dont do them but I can recommend places that do.

Ive been doing Burner Hair braiding for the last 3 summers, and this year will be no exception. This year, however, Im pretty much done with yarn braids, as I found a way better alternative. Wool dreads. Theyre lighter, easier to install, and can be customized really really cool. Plus, when youre done with the burn, take them out, and attatch them to a clip or scrunchie, and you have falls for all the parties you are going to go to for the rest of the year. And then next burn, I can put them back in.

Im sitting around the house on maternity leave until the baby comes in May, so its a perfect time for me to get rolling on the dreads. If you want some, time to order them is NOW, because I wont be able to roll them once I have the baby.I will install them pre-burn week, but as far as making them, I need to get started now.

Direct message me, and I will tell you where to get the materials, and where to have them sent. Pricing is 100$ to make the dreads, and another 100$ to install. But once you have the dreads, theyre yours to keep and re-use.
Here are mine from last year http://burningwoman.tribe.net/photos/0910d11a-6459-4b39-9c96-b7ec4970ede6
