Ive posted this before, but I just proved to myself again what a great tea recipe this is for rockin your period so you dont get it at the Burn!
Heres a recipe to bring your menstration on. For example, Im going on a little Railroad Earth tour next week, my favorite band, doing 3 nights and I dont want to have to deal with it. Its supposed to come next thursday, when tour starts. Today is Friday, 6 days before. Yesterday I went to the health food store and picked up herbs to make tea. I havent done this in YEARS mind you, but I thought I would give it a shot. Drank it last night and got it this AM 6 days early.
In the bulk dried herb section, get a table spoon or 2 of each:
Black Cohosh root
Chamomile flowers
Pennyroyal (its like mint)
Mugwort (yuck this stuff is gross but really works)
Parsley leaves
Get a big pot on the stove and add around 12 cups of water. Bring to boil. Keep lid on at all times.
Add the Black Cohosh root first and let that simmer on low for 20 minutes. Roots need to be brewed.
After that, add a table spoon of the rest of the herbs, turn off heat, and keep lid on and let steep.
Strain or spoon into a mug (regular strainer works fine for me, a few little leaves wont hurt)
This stuff is NASTY tasting, so add a tablespoon of Honey to help it go down.
======================================================================
AS WITH ANY MEDICATIONS AND HERBS, DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, OR HAVE HERBAL SENSITIVITIES. SOME MIGHT WANT TO TALK TO THEIR DOCTOR. DO NOT DO THIS EVERY MONTH. ONLY WHEN YOU REALLY NEED IT.
^^just some disclaimers. These are strong herbs that really get the job done.
The rest of the tea is good to drink after you start, because it helps your body shed and makes periods less painful.

Fri, April 24, 2009 - 11:12 AMHow cool! I've never heard of this. But every year, there's the 'period on playa' discussion, so maybe you could repost this closer to the event? =)

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 12:36 PMUnless of course you think you are pregnant and don't want to be. Years ago I worked at GNC and had a few women come in to buy herbs to make this type of tea... that was before we had such a thing as the 'morning after pill'.
I'm just sayin.

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 4:16 PMMy mom used to use Dong quai as a "body-cleanser" (ovarian cists and baby cleaning). A lot of her waitresses at the time used it as a form of birth control. I found out it is actually a natural anti-coagulant, or blood thinner. Black cohosh root stimulates estrogen production. While both of these work to jump start your period, they also both affect how regular birth control works. Since both cause, in real terms, a system purge, your body may find itself restarting and ovulate a regular embryo, not a gamete.
Don't take dong quai if you have a blood disorder, or if you have been recently injured, or are Emo. You may actually kill yourself on accident. Don't offer your cohosh root tea to your boyfriend. Don't take either if you have a liver condition you are already being treated for. DO NOT try to make a super tea out of both. Most birth control (fake estrogen) packets say not to take with blood thinners. Don't drink alot of this tea if you smoke cigarettes for the same reason.
If an herb is a version of a medication, or causes the same thing as a medication in opposition with meds you already take, then don't take it. Teas are not as strong of a form as outright eating an herb, so just make the tea and don't wonder what it tastes like.
Sorry, but as someone who wants to move society away from synthesized drugs, I don't want anyone being gung-ho and stupid and plaster their accidental death all over the news because they couldn't be cautious about jump starting their period. And I will copy and paste this onto the thread made closer to the burn. -

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Fri, April 24, 2009 - 4:21 PMI took one strong mug of this tea and it did the trick. I didnt have to go batty and drink endles cups to get effects. I feel great today with little cramping. But thats just me, everyones different, definitely might work differently on different people.
I dont take birth control pills either. Never thought of that though as a warning. Good thinking. -

Fri, April 24, 2009 - 4:25 PMSince you were alive enough to post this thread, and have made it yourself before, that was just aimed at readers who have never used it. I assume since you haven't died, you aren't going to die from it now ; )

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Mon, April 27, 2009 - 12:34 PMIf you're on the pill, you don't need anything special to change when your period comes. You adjust your pills to have a period when you want to have it. I haven't had an unwanted period in years. Talk to your doctor about how to adjust your pill taking to control your period. =)

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Sat, April 25, 2009 - 3:08 AMOoo... please be very careful with this stuff. Black cohosh is powerful stuff. And pennyroyal? Geezo, make sure you *really* read up on that. I bought some oil at Tenzing Momo in Seattle once and they didn't write "pennyroyal" on the label, they wrote "FATAL," because it's poisonous if you take the oil internally.
Caution, caution, research, responsibility!
Blessings,
SW

Pennyroyal
Sat, April 25, 2009 - 6:13 AMWe all know that wikipedia ain't gospel, but it's a good start. While both dangerous, there does seem to be a difference between Pennyroyal oil and tea. Of course, you'd need to do more research than this... I just thought it would be helpful to include this in this thread.
"Since the U.S. Congress passed the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act in October 1994, all manufactured forms of pennyroyal have carried a warning label against its use by pregnant women. This substance is not regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.[1]
Pennyroyal essential oil is extremely concentrated, it should not ever be taken internally because it is highly toxic; even in small doses, the poison can lead to death. Complications have been reported from attempts to use the oil for self-induced abortion. The oil can be used for aromatherapy, a bath additive and as an insect repellent. There are numerous studies that show pennyroyal's toxicity to humans and animals.[2][3][4][5]
Pennyroyal tea is the use of an infusion made from the herb, the infusion is widely reputed as safe to ingest in restricted quantities. It has been traditionally employed and reportedly successful as an emmenagogue (menstrual flow stimulant) or as an abortifacient. In 1994 a young woman died from an undetected ectopic pregnancy while performing a self-induced abortion using pennyroyal tea, reports say that she had consumed the tea for longer than the recommended time length of five days.[6][1] The most popular current use of the tea is to settle the stomach. Other reported medicinal uses through history include fainting, flatulence, gall ailments, gout, hepatitis (presumably Hepatitis A), a lung cleanser, a gum strengthener and, when ground with vinegar, a tumor remedy, although there is little to no medical evidence on any of these treatments.
Dried pennyroyal should not be used as a natural flea repellent due to its toxicity to pets, even at extremely low levels." -

Black Cohash
Sat, April 25, 2009 - 6:17 AMAnother useful wikipedia entry. Again, if you plan to use this, do your research.
"Herbal use
Black cohosh has been included in herbal compounds or dietary supplements marketed to women as remedies for the symptoms of premenstrual tension, menopause and other gynecological problems. However, its usage for treating these ailments is controversial, with a recent study conducted with a large group of participants and a range of black cohosh formulations casting doubt on its efficacy, since biological effects of some black cohosh preparations were not performing better than placebo. [2] Study design and dosage of black cohosh preparations play a role in clinical outcome,[3] and recent investigations with pure compounds found in black cohosh have identified some beneficial effects of these compounds on physiological pathways underlying age-related disorders like osteoporosis.[4]
Because of some physiological effects of black cohosh extracts, it was originally thought these extracts contained estrogen-like compounds. Recent research, however, suggests that these biological effects may in part be due to binding activities to serotonin receptors, [5] and a derivative of serotonin with high affinity for binding to serotonin receptors has been identified in black cohosh. [6] Native Americans used black cohosh to treat gynecological and other disorders, including sore throats, kidney problems, and depression. Black cohosh has also been used as an abortifacient (see side effects).
Like most plants, black cohosh contains a very large number of organic compounds with biological activity. [3] Complex biological molecules, such as triterpene glycosides (e.g. cycloartanes), have been shown to reduce cytokine-induced bone loss (osteoporosis) by blocking osteoclastogenesis in in vitro and in vivo models, [4] suggesting that application of black cohosh-produced compounds may aid treatments of this common ailment in humans.
Side effects
Studies carried out with human subjects who were administered two commercially available black cohosh preparations, did not detect estrogenic effects on the breast,[7] suggesting absence of estrogenic activity in pure black cohosh-based formulations as a cause of side effects.
Black cohosh produces endometrial stimulation.[citation needed] Since black cohosh increases blood flow to the pelvic area, its use is not recommended during menses as it may increase or prolong bleeding.[citation needed] It should be used with caution after usage for six months.[8] Additionally, black cohosh contains tannins, which may inhibit iron absorption.[9]
No studies have been published on long-term safety in humans.[10] However some studies have suggested that long-term use may promote metastasis of cancer tissue. Using transgenic mice as a model, researchers found that black cohosh did not increase incidence of primary breast cancer, but that it increased metastasis of pre-existing breast cancer to the lungs. [11].
Liver damage has been reported in a few individuals using black cohosh, but large numbers of women have taken the herb without reporting adverse health effects.[12] While studies of black cohosh have not proven that the herb causes liver damage, Australia has added a warning to the label of all products containing black cohosh, stating that it may cause harm to the liver of some individuals and should not be used without medical supervision.[13]
Reported direct side-effects also include dizziness, headaches, and seizures; diarrhea; nausea and vomiting; sweating; constipation; low blood pressure and slow heartbeats; and weight problems."

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Sat, April 25, 2009 - 10:07 AMIf used correctly this could be great for some women. But dont set your hopes too high, as often times the playa will make you bleed even if you just finished your moon before going out there. Ive known a few girls who were stoked to get their menses before the burn, just to get it again halfway through, AND not have tampons on hand. -

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Thu, April 30, 2009 - 7:52 PMThough interested in women's health, witchy herby stuff, etc., for years, it wasn't until my period was 2 months late, that I started researching abortificants.
Hopefully anyone reading this will take the time to do likewise (research) before drinking this concoction.
Nothing I tried worked to bring on my menses. I *think* dong quai tincture did something, but it hasn't brought on a late period since that one time.
My cycle right now is on with several burns I go to...what a pain. The last one, Preheat, just the amount of panties taking up space in my suitcase sucked. :P -

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Sun, August 2, 2009 - 3:32 PMHas anybody tried using parsley tea to jump start their period? I was doing some research on the internet, and it seems like it can be pretty effective. Of course my period is supposed to start around Aug. 31st, so I'm looking for a way to jump start it just a few days early. -
-
Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 6:33 PMI use parsley in my tea too. Maybe skip the Black Cohosh and replace with Parsley to be more careful.
Thanks for postinng all of the warnings. They sell all of these ingrediants in the health food stores without warning labels, so I think were being a little over cautious, but thats a good thing.
Im supposed to get mine the week previous to Bman, but am going to do a light brew of the tea just to get er dun. I think I will stick to the mugwort and pennyroyal. I dont htink the Cohosh is neccessary, and if it makes you bleed more, forget that! Unless youre trying to expel somthing I dont think thats neccessary.
I really think the mugwort does the trick mostly....it tastes so strong that just smelling it makes me get crampy. I just sense that this is the key ingrediant. -

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 7:31 AMI've tried parsley, no effect.
My period came the day, the exact day, I am supposed to leave. *sigh*
So I was actually thinking about this thread, and will probably give it (a variation of sorts, after I refresh my research from a few years ago). Can't hurt. Would love to not be crammed on a bus for days with people who don't need to stop every few hours to re-staunch blood from their sex holes. -

Re: Herbal Tea Recipe to bring on early mensturation
