Hello burners! This will be my third year at burning man but my first year with a fancy RV. Anyway, I was just wondering what the deal is with the "limited internet access" on the playa. Will anyone with a laptop have access to the Internet, or not necessarily? What if I have Wii Fii? What's the best way to maximize my chances of having Internet acess? I couldn't find any info about this on the web site. Thanks so much!~Boadie

Re: Net access on the playa?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 10:43 AMIt's likely that a camp or two will gift wifi internet to the BRC community. Some years the signal strength has been good and access was available most of the time. Other years, like last year, the signal strength was only fair and, if you did get on, chances were you'd be booted off. At least that's how it was for me.

Re: Net access on the playa?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 5:04 PMoh god, i loved when there was no connectivity of any sort out there. with no coverage, it means everyone must unplug from their daily routines, and immerse themselves into black rock city, leaving that other world behind.
of course, if i had my way, all the rv's would be parked in a special section out yonder, lined up neatly in alphabetical order by model name. (90% kidding ;^) -- rv's have their advantages, but they often insulate people from the full experience, and they make it much easier to make everything "just like home" which, to me, it shouldn't be. it's not home, it's frickin' black rock city.
now, i get that there are people who have pressing personal needs to stay connected (and to be in an rv, for that matter, like people with kids and health issues), but in checking your profile, boadie, and seeing where you've asked this on other tribes, apparently that's not it.... you say you want internet access so you can stream your favorite internet radio station.
to which i most respectfully say... are you serious? the reason you want to bring a laptop to the playa is so you can go into your rv to chill and stream music? and so you'll be running your rv generator so you can keep the air-con on and the computer charging? i mean, it's not like there aren't a gazillion amazing kinds of music out there to listen to. and for chilling, why not just burn your music to a cd or put it on your ipod? low-tech, self-sufficient, and it doesn't eat up the bandwidth.
music does not require internet. -

Me TOO!! Makes me sad that "being connected" is becoming such a prevalent reality...

Re: Net access on the playa?
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 3:35 PMWell - for my 2 cents worth ---- as my mother in law who is 84, recently had a stroke, it would be kinda nice to know my kids could get us if Granny falls, fails or croaks...But as for daily surfing - not interested...

Re: Net access on the playa?
Mon, August 17, 2009 - 9:18 PMmuch to my chagrin... yes we were able to use the net and pick up a wifi signal ... our camp was in the center camp area. The only reason my husband was checking was he was unemployed at the time and was negotiating a good job.... which he did get offered while we were on playa. So I suppose it was not too bad -

Re: Net access on the playa?
Tue, August 18, 2009 - 1:26 PMBottom line to this, (including EVERYTHING Leslie said) is that the internet connect out this is sketchy at best, so DON'T COUNT ON IT!
as for using the center camp conectivity, yes it's there, but don;t assume just cuz it's there you can connect to it, with that many people out there if everyone tried to connect all at once, well Just thnk TRIBE, and how often its down because the system is overloaded,
truly, there are MANY very good radio stations on the playa,BMIR for one plays some killer ass kickin eclectic stuff 24 a day for th entre week.
what the hell would ya need to stream your own music for...
put the puters away folks and go out and play, REALLY! you dont get a second chance to LIVE a playa experience that you most certainly would miss by being holed up in some AirCon RV with your own streaming music,
there will be soooooo much music already out there that your own little stream cant even come close to matching and besides ya can listen to your own stream of tunes when ya get off the playa.
not to mention EVERYTHING ELSE GOING ON OUT THERE!!
get involved, Dont be a spectator from inside an RV, get out there and be one with the playa and the playazens,
one week off the puter will not kill you, I promise, I have done it myself and lived to say, Putting the puter away will increase your senses far more than sitting inside an RV streaming your tunes.

Thu, August 20, 2009 - 11:20 AMI really hope that connectivity - wifi and cellular - are sketchy to none! This is one of the only ways I can keep my boyfriend off his iPhone for a week! -

Mon, August 24, 2009 - 9:06 AMI will never tell anyone if my cell phone someday works at the burn!!! Getting away from the constant electronic connection is one of my favorite parts of going! -

Re: Net access on the playa?
Mon, August 24, 2009 - 12:10 PMI'm telling everyone I know that the playa is an electronic dead zone. Nothing gets in or goes out. I might as well be in another galaxy for a week. No cell phones, no smart phones, no computers, no radios, no TV. No signal of any kind gets through the fence, just pure random noise, mostly in the visible part of the spectrum.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it. -

Re: Net access on the playa?
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 5:53 PMThanks what I love about it.
I had a very vivid nightmare once, in which cellphones worked on the playa, and I spent the whole week frantically texting my boyfriend worrying about where he was and what he was doing with who... -

Re: Net access on the playa?
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 4:45 PMI'm closing on my first house the day after I get back from the playa. Going off the grid immediately prior to such a major life event has me scared shitless. That's why I'm making sure everyone involved knows I'll be off the grid, and I'm getting all my ducks in a row now. Then, the moment my wheels leave the playa, I'll turn on my cell and hope nothing blew up while I was away.
If there is cell service on the playa, I might... keyword: might... check messages late in the week just to make sure nothing blew up. But I'll do it quickly and privately hang my head in shame for at least 5 minutes. Then it's back to playatime!
In Black Rock City, the best way to connect is to disconnect. -

Re: Net access on the playa?
Thu, August 27, 2009 - 11:06 PMwehave developed a "family emergency" soooo we might be using it too, and feel the same way, WTF! how did we do it before, out of touch and loved it now it seems almost "secure" icky in a way. but comforting too, bizarre combination, Hmmm, EVOLE? maybe... we shall see.

Re: Net access on the playa?
Fri, August 28, 2009 - 11:46 AMI have a grandbaby coming out of the NICU Saturday, The day we leave. I have instructed folks that I *might* be able to check messages, and lo let me know if something happens with the baby, (Just so I know and can send some energy out) but otherwise I will be incommunicado. I do not, however, want to hear of any drama surrounding the parents of said baby via text or voice mail, thankyouverymuch!
Mostly I'll have the phone off, but again it's nice to have the safety net.
