I'm doing a survey to get some new ideas. Include not just favorite, but practical and easy to prep food/snacks/goodies - preferably healthy (whatever that means, it's such a relative thing); essentials you can't go without on the playa!
For me:
* cold cucumbers - I like to eat these unpeeled/whole by taking bites, great the day of course
* Tasty Bites - www.tastybite.com super yummy authentic indian curries. Eat them as is or heat the pouch in boiling water. All the ingredients are readable, no yukky stuff in it and super cheap. You can also find them at healthfood stores.
* Smoked salmon in a can from Trader Joe's
* raw health food bars: lara bars
* sea weed - yum, iodine
* Quinoa - already cooked, placed in a ziplock bag or a container
* baby carrots
* mini 10oz pouch boxes of rice dream milk (hey, that's not food!)
* super food powder
* emergen-c w/msm, no sugar added (hey, that's not 'food' either!)

Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 5:56 AMcouscous, makes up quickly with hot water and you can add all sorts of extras easliy, dried cranberries, raisins, canned chicken
frozen raspberries, they grow outside my kitchen door, takes some preplanning but are wonderful when our fellow villagers make pancakes
tin foil meals, you cook up whatever and seal it in packets aad freeze it, double bag it so it doesn't leak into your cooler, then just pop on a heat source for one hot meal. (I like teriyaki chicken)
turkey jerky aka pocket protein, no nitrates and is good long-burning fuel when running around
tuna packets, also in slamon and fillets and seasoned, less messy than cans
Simply Naked pita chips, salty and substantial
crystalized ginger, great tummy settler
not healthy: frozen cream puffs and shelf-stable bacon
I'm allergic to nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes) and I'm not supposed to have soy protein, so many vegan foods are bad for me. Go figure. -

Wed, July 5, 2006 - 10:19 AMOooo, good idea with the foil meals. Thanks Anti-M!

Thu, June 29, 2006 - 10:07 AMCanned/jarred stuffed grape leaves (holy cow these are playariffically delicious).
Hummus.
Just Veggies dried veggies mixed with BBQ flavored soy nuts.
V-8.
Parmalat individual milk boxes. I prefer them over soy/rice/almond because they can be frozen without seperating.
This year I'm going to try:
My homemade protein gunk.
Trader Joe's thai curried tuna in a pouch. -

Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 11:47 AMoh, couscous - such a good idea, i gotta try it this year.
and does anybody has a recomendation for a good canned chicken soup? i tried campbells - it's too greesy.
i always get so tired of food that i bring at the end of the week, but these are my favorites:
- canned peaches! sooo refreshing when they're cold.
- hummus
- dolmas
- miso soup!
- persian cucumbers, or those small ones for pickling and cherry tomoatoes (last year our frend got tons of both from a farmers market - they were soooo goood.)
- dried apples from Tr. joes.
- boiled red/white potatoes - only last 1st couple days.
- boild eggs - 1st couple days as well.
- black TEA with lemon and sugar
- russian cheese spread Viola with dark bread (german rye/russian wheat). i think you can get Viola only at russian stores.
i also make a big thing (from costco) of roast pork (sorry veagans :)) slice it at home, and put into tupperware - lasts for a few days, just don't forget to refill ice in your cooler, but it's usually eaten faster than it would go bad :) -
-
Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 1:55 PMI LOVE that pork roast from Costco! Good idea!!

Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 11:56 AMPre-cooked breakfast burritos (wrap in foil, wrap in individual ziplocks.....just throw in a pan to re-heat on the playa!)
Cup o'noodles taste like HEAVEN
Goldfishfishfish crackers
Turkey breast (pre cooked) with couscous (pre-cooked)....chop turkey up into couscous, add spices or whatever strikes your fancy-- heat in pot
Pre-cooked belgian waffles (these keep amazingly well if in ziplocks!) with fresh strawberry goo on them
beef jerkey. We run out every year, no matter how much we buy. I'm bringing a whole cow this year! -
-
Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 6:49 PM> Cup o'noodles taste like HEAVEN <
gross, cup o'noodles? never in the 'real' world, but yes, very yummy at the playa!
There are things that I never eat out here, only at the playa, ya know what I mean?
The playa is a great place to break all kind of rules.

Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 12:18 PMFruit in those new plastic jars, chill and just eat as much as you like and reseal.
peanut butter, but you have to be choosy or it melts. Skippy natural so far so good.
My friends found some shelf-stable hummus to try, no preservatives, oddly the name brand fresh hummus has sodium benzoate in it.
Honest T in plastic bottles, usually pricey but we found it for 20 cents a bottle at our local salvage grocery store. Ditto ViatminWater, much nicer than Gatorade.
Juice in boxes, nice for a quick cold swig at breakfast.
We freeze caprisun sports or all juice packs and toss them in the coolers. Drinkable ice packs!
Babybell cheeses in the little wax packs with crackers. Smiling cow wedges with granola bars, yum.

Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 3:16 PMmy favorite food on the playa is the gourmet fancy stuff some of you fine folks like to cook up and share with us lazy-ass eat-out-of-a-can folks. like bacon, or that deep fried turkey the amazing solar guy did one year. if it's actually hot, i think it's manna from heaven.
i'm lazier than that. for a treat, i like to bring crackers, caviar and smoked salmon, and cream cheese -- i eat that in the first couple of days when the cream cheese is still good.
but normally, i eat raw cashews and almonds, good olives, salami, hard cheese, tuna or salmon from those foil packs, chili from the can, peanut butter and crackers, cookies, and fruit or applesauce in those little plastic one-serving packages. oh and bushmills whiskey. and bourbon and coke. i stopped trying to pretend i was going to make real food on the playa years ago.
and i can't stomach tasty bites, sadly -- i think i o.d.'d on them in my first year, 96, and since then, they really taste bad to me.
one year, when i was vegan, i found a great meal that i always liked -- a box of thawed-out frozen spinach (just keep it in the cooler like ice and it'll melt enough to each soon enough), with a box of tofu cut up on top of it and a couple of packages of soy sauce sprinkled over top. -

Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 3:31 PMLeslie, I will have to have you over for something gourmet cooked! that's how we camp. -
-
Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 4:13 PMWe took a lot of food last year, it was my first year and I would hate to go hungry. This is all I ate.
Granola in yogurt
Frapachino (cold)
Salami with cheese and crackers
and Sandwhiches with lots of tomatoes
a few hardboiled eggs for protein
Aussie bites (from Costco)
and Gatoraide.
I'm not as health minded as most of you. If it's convenient, I'll eat it. -
-
Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 4:40 PMDefinitely, high acid content foods seem to be all the rage...countereffects the Playa alkalinity. Easy to take, easy to eat, easy to clean & digest foods work wonderfully!

Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Thu, June 29, 2006 - 6:04 PMYou do realize that technically, no cashew is raw. The poisonous shell is removed at high heat before the growers ship them.
Just being nit-picky, back to your regularly scheduled topic. -
-
Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Fri, June 30, 2006 - 8:51 PMThat's also why cashews are moderately expensive, hand job and all

Re: What's your favorite food on the playa?
Fri, June 30, 2006 - 4:12 PMWe took a whole case of cup o'noodles last year and never opened them. we still have half of them. maybe one or two will return. We didn't eat much out there, but got by well on:
-summer sausage, cheese and crackers
-Dinty Moore stew in a can (usually nasty, but the best thing I had out there)
-pancakes and bacon from our neighbors with a camp stove
-cereal with soy milk
-cold peaches and cottage cheese (don't freeze!!!)
-M&Ms and skittles :)
We're not the most health conscious anyway, but out there I go for quick and easy. -
-

Cup o soup is easy, so are turkey-dogs, chili, and mac & cheese.
I like to bring a whole tray of cheeses, and canned fruits.
I eat so little my main staple is usually a Rockstar, suplemented by whatever food is easiest to consume and seems the least gross to me at the moment.
I also like to get fancty too-- but white trash foods are SO good out there... -

Freeze the cans or boxes. Use them as refrigeration. Drink as they thaw out. OMG the first couple of days, pure, slushie goodness.
Avocados. One time I brought a couple bags from TJ's and survived by only dirtying a tablespoon eating avocados out of the shell all week!
Powdered gatorade for the camelback or nalgene bottle (this tip from one of the Burners Without Borders crew. You gotta know they know what they're talkin' about!)
