ok, she has no idea i'm doing this (though armadillo does ;^) -- but i have come here to suggest that those of us who have benefited from the love, attention, generosity, wisdom and all-around kick-assness of lyingbare over the years each contribute a little bit in order to send her to her family reunion... in scotland!
she blogged about it yesterday, saying:
"Ok, I am facing a dilemma here, I can buy these tickets to my family reunion in scotland, and return home for the gathering of a lifetime, I haven't been back to Scotland since 1992, and since this is the 250th year since the Scots could parade the royal mile in tartans, and also celebrate Robbie Burns, and see my family, I am inclined to just toss caution to the wind and take every cent we have to make this journey....
on the other hand. it will take ever ecent we have, AND, what of the economy, our jobs are safe, so far, but with so many struggling how "right" is it to go off and celebrate something that certainly isn't a need.... "
her friends all encouraged her to go for it, since after all it's once in a lifetime! and late last night, she bought the tickets, so she's committed to it. then it occurred to me that those of us here who love her might want to offset those costs, kinda like her family here sending her to visit her family there. (i'm picturing a hundred of us lifting her up to fly across the ocean... cue inspirational music here ;^)
and so i'm taking up a collection. i think the easiest thing is for me to collect via paypal and then forward a lump sum to her. (i'm happy to give an accounting later to anyone who wants it, of course, and if you'd rather give directly to her, you'll have to get her paypal address but go for it).
i invite everyone who knows and loves bare to kick in $5, $10, $20 bucks -- how awesome would it be for her to know she's traveling on a gift from 100 or more of the women who so love and admire her here? even a buck or two puts your support into her journey.
my paypal address is leslieayres at hotmail dot com -- please make a note that it's for bare with your tribe name so i can let her know everyone who contributed to her.
and bare, i know you're gonna say we don't need to do this. yeah, we know that. and we want you to reprazent at your reunion without having to spend every cent you have. i know i love you, and that love is echoed all around this place.

Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Thu, January 29, 2009 - 1:21 PMOMG! well, thru the tears I can see the screen enough to type, "I LOVE YOU ALL",
and Yes, as Leslie so astutely mentions, " i know you're gonna say we don't need to do this. yeah, we know that"
yes, that IS exactly what I would say...
there are NO words, none, beyond I love you and Thank you.....
it has always been incredibly difficult for me to accept a gift, burningman has taught me how to not only give but also to receive, but THIS is HUGE,
I know that saying "It's not necessary" is futile. with a roomful of strong willed women, so I won't even try.. but do know that each one of you are in my thoughts whether you do this or not... and I DONT WANT ANY ONE OF YOU TO FEEL LIKE TO HAVE TO!!!!!!!
really, we would not be taking this trip if we didnt feel we could recoup what we will be spending.. just a few less chai's, no dinners out, and some overtime at work and we'll be just fine.... I even turned down buying the new nintendo game.... LOL!!!
tickets are purchased, now all we need are the train tickets and the ferrie tickets for the last leg of the trip.....
the main event is taking place in Edinburgh, it has been 250 years since the scots were allowed to parade the Royal mile in their tartans, so, all the participating Clans will be parading together, My Clan is one of the participating clans. there is much history in my Clan, The MacLean's, we were a scrappy Lot!,
then to the family gathering on the Isle.. we were going to forego the Isle since it adds extra travel arrangements by train and then by ferrie to get there.. I wasn't concerned for that, I've been to the Isle, and I would be seeing most everyone in edinburgh anyway.....
but, ya all are making it possible to add that visit one more time to the place I love most on earth... sitting in a field of Wild Irises and Heather, across the loch from family homestead, and just listening as the wind sings across the hills... and THAT is a HUGE blessing...
I'll post an old pic from the 1992 trip, I was MUCH younger then LOL!! 17 years since I was there... its all too surreal to be actually returning, I never thought I'd see it again....
thank you for your kindness and generosity in helping to make this happen... it goes above and beyond anything I can imagine.....
in gratitude and with love

Sat, January 31, 2009 - 9:12 PMooops... public now! Reminds me of a phrase we had when I was younger... if someone liked something we didn't quite understand, we'd say 'hey, whatever blows your skirt up!'

Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Fri, January 30, 2009 - 7:05 PMguess I spelled it incorrectly,, but in any case, the "great Kilt" with the Mantle is as large as a quilt, fine for wrapping up in on a cold Scottish eve'n.... though, if we're lucky, we won;t have any rain for the great gathering, if so, ahh well, nothin like a fine rain on the Scottish Highlands....
"The mantle which was worn with the leine developed into the large blanket which was then wrapped around the body and eventually secured at the waist with a belt. This was the belted plaid, more commonly referred to as the Great kilt."
trust me, the fun has only just begun, but making these arrangements are exhausting... LOL!! just don't attempt to stay right in Edinburgh, it's bloody expensive... so, we plan to camp just outside of Edinburgh, or hit up the hostels there. staying with family the first few days but after that we're on our own, which I actually prefer anyway..
I'll post a few pics from our trip in 1992, when I was much younger LOL!! we camped then too, it was awesome. in a camp "tent" called a shieling, man, one of these on the playa would rock, kinda like a dome, in a way..

Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 1:31 PMI'm officially nominating LyingBare as our national Kilt checking representative. All those in favor, say "aye"...motion carries.
I expect a full report, complete with pictures, and said report is to be measured in inches, or at least with a side by side conversion to the metric system, no later than 2 weeks after you return from your glorious trip.
I suggest some parameters to the report:
1. pictures from different angles
2. use a ruler for comparison, 'cuz we ALL know the difference between male & female measurements.
3. some of those hand/pocket air activated warming thingys 'cuz its bound to be chilly at certain points, and well, need I say more...
Have a blast!!!
Cathy -
-
Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 1:43 PMAlright, but first I must mention one NEVER uses a ruler for measuring, it's all done by "arm length" and it'll be July, so no hand warmers then, unless some silly scot (like me) gets too cold in the night air.
but Yes! I can snap some candid shots. or at least try to get some... I'll even ask a few drunken ones at the ceilidh to flash all my lovely burning women, after an ale or two, since then I can claim I was drunk and not be hauled off to jail... or worse, LOL!! -

Sat, January 31, 2009 - 5:46 PMauthentic, darlin, it don't get anymore authentic than being right there in the thick of em.... and, for the record. the girls aren't bad either.... Mmmm, pretty lasses with raven or red hair and green eyes, that can knock back a half and a pint and still be standing, if not dancin onthe bartop or table. the swing and swish of the kilted skirts..... Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 3:37 PMjust want to say thanks for you guys who have sent in a donation for bare, please keep 'em coming! i can feel the love!
and i know a lot of people are feeling tight on their own budgets too, especially in these times -- but wanted to share something that works for me every time. whenever i begin to feel worried about my cash flow, i unblock it by giving some money away. it's how i tell the universe that i trust that more is always coming, and how i keep the flow going. it really changes my own energy around money. so don't be shy, letting go of ten bucks might unblock something so even more will flow your way!
i'll give it a few weeks so folks who don't check in often have a chance to see the thread. -

Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 4:13 PMOhhh Leslie, that is so true, we have been down to our last 5 and someone says they need a few bucks for gas or milk or bread or something. and we'll hand it over to em because we have all we need to make it... and as sure as ya give the last away, more comes back to ya.... we do the same thing here......
but, times are tough, for everyone... so, please, dont ya dare feel ya have to do this.... it is a wonderful gesture and I too feel the love from all of ya.... whether or not you're doin this... cuz, ya know.... we WILL be just fine... of that I havent any doubt....
Ahhhh, but here's a thing.... if any of ya have an specific requests ( i'm not rich in wealth) then do let me know, and I'll see what I can do to bring back what you desire....
and of course I can ALWAYS afford a postcard, so if ya want one from over there... with any particular photo on it, send me an address and i'll send ya a postcard..
bigger items like real scotch whiskey, well there's a limit... so, though I will be bringing home a wee bottle. maybe what we could all do is get together on the playa, perhaps the Goddess gathering, and Drink that baby.... :)
I love ya all.... truly.... and it's fun to share my love of my heritage with all of you....

Haggis?
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 4:38 PMFunny, no one has mentioned haggis.
I would like to see a photo of Bare eating haggis. -
-
Re: Haggis?
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 4:55 PMHahahha, Ahhh Yes, ya either Love it or ya hate it... as long as it's fresh it's not too bad, and it's a must ya follow it with a goodly shot of whiskey....
here's a cute ditty we all sing BEFORE they do the official address to the haggis. Enjoy!
www.youtube.com/watch
and then of course, this is the Official way to "address the haggis"
www.youtube.com/watch
first it's piped in (bagpipes) and followed by the Cook or chef, and then the chieftains of the honored clan(s)
and that bizzare Robert Burns poem.... here it is in thick Scots brogue. with translation for the Scots tongue impaired LOL!!
www.youtube.com/watch
then we all eat our fill, or as much as ya can stomach...
NO! it's NOT my favourite scottish dish, but it's a must for every scot to eat a taste of it, as it's said to bring "good Luck & prosperity" thru the year....
Silly Scots.. -

Re: Haggis?
Sat, January 31, 2009 - 7:28 PMMy wedding was Scottish on Hogmanay no less.
I'll never forget the sound of those bagpipes as the sun was setting.

I'd like to donate $100 but I don't have paypal
is there anyway that I can contribute other than paypal please?
ps Captain Erotica is 1/2 MacAndrews dontcha know -
-
Re: Haggis?
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 2:51 PMyou totally rock, captain erotica! i'm from the campbell clan myself, have a family tree that goes back to mary, queen of scots apparently.
i'm going to suggest you send bare a pm and get her mailing address, then you can just send her a check. or if you prefer that your check goes with the other ones, you can pm me for my mailing address, and i'll include it when i send her a lumpsum from the paypal proceeds (which, btw, i'm going to cover all the fees for... so if you donate 20 bucks, she'll get the whole 20 bucks).
i haven't updated the count, but we've got a couple of hundred or so collected so far. keep 'em coming, please!
-
Re: Haggis?
Mon, February 2, 2009 - 6:39 PMWhy Capt'n, Sir, You Lovely Generous Man, AND a McAndrews too... sept of the MacIntosh/Ross Clans... far as I know The MacLean's didn't war with them... :) and I know many of the Ross clansmen...
Leslie, on the other hand... there's a story of YOUR clan and Mine..... and if you'd like to hear it sometime I'd love to share it with you,
lets just say, even to this day, The MacLean's and Campbells have an ongoing battle between them.. albeit in fun and jest, but we keep a goodly natured show going for the sake of history.... and All for the sake of a women... LOL!!

Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Tue, February 3, 2009 - 5:32 AMI cannot imagine anyone more deserving than Lying Bare!
I can still remember my first year at Burning Man.....it was Bare's voice of reason that helped me prepare after our veteran burners skipped out on us (3 virgins) and left us to fend for ourselves. This year will be our 4th burn (if we go) and I doubt I would have found the courage to go the first time if it weren't for the practical, common sense suggestions from Bare. My mom joined us on our second burn, just 6 weeks after she completed chemotherapy and she had a blast. I sent her to the Burning Man virgins tribe to help her prepare, and she even commented that she really liked Bare's input. Down to earth, common sense, no drama. That's our Bare!
Anyway, I'd be happy to contribute. Have a wonderful time Bare! -

Wed, February 11, 2009 - 7:10 PMi'm bumping this up -- if you're one of the folks who was waiting for payday, or just pondering whether it really could be possible that kicking in ten or twenty bucks for bare might bring you some good stuff yourself, or you're just still pondering what's under those there kilts... here's your chance!
i think i'll give it another few days, and then i'll send a check to bare for the total. i'll put together a list for her of the folks who donated, and any note they added with the paypal payment... so make sure to let me know who you are on tribe if it's not obvious from your email, ok?

Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Thu, February 12, 2009 - 1:52 PMask away, chica. i haven't done a total count, but it's around 200 bucks, maybe a bit more from mostly $10 and $20 donations.
i wish it were more, i know there are lots of ladies here who've basked in the love and glow of lying bare, but it will be what it will be, and it will be money well spent, that i know! ;^) -

Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Thu, February 12, 2009 - 2:17 PMit will be used to purchase the train ticket I need to get from London to Edinburgh. and THANK YOU ALL for your wonderful and generous gift, it takes someof the financial burden off knowing that one train ticket is covered. and I Love and appreciate all of you for that....

i think i told you -- my wings tattoo on my back was for my 50th birthday, and i asked my friends to all chip in, even if it was just a dollar, so that they would be a part of it. i raised exactly enough money to pay for it, amazingly. and it means so much to have them be part of it that way.

Wed, February 25, 2009 - 1:43 PMto complete this project... bare should receive an envelope in the mail today with $300, which represents donations from sixteen awesome people. thank you all so much for being part of this.
she tells me this will more than cover one of the train ticket/passes that will get them around scotland during their travels.
i've sent her the list of who donated, so she knows from whence it came.
thank you all so much for giving a little bit of love back to one of the most giving, kind, loving and generous women to walk this planet! -

Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland!
Wed, February 25, 2009 - 5:33 PMand, THANK YOU ALL, sooooooooo much, I havent words enough to express how much this means to me, I only hope that someday I can be there for YOU even if only in some small way, when the time arises...... to help you realize a dream....
as for where were going......
we are flying into London, our Frenchies (Our Foreign exchange student from years ago) are paying the way for us to visit them in France, going by train thru the tube, takes about 2 hours. we'll be there for 2 days, then train back to London, Down to Cornwall England to see Family there, and visit the graves of ancestors past.
we hope to take the bus from where my family are in St Austell, to Tintagel (dintagel) on the other side of the isle to where legend has it King arthur was born and the ruins of his castle are still there.
from there we'll train back up to visit Stonehenge, and on to Scotland thru Glasgow, Oban, over to Inverness down to Stirling and over to Edinburgh where the Gathering is being held., doesnt look like we will make it out to the family Castle on the Isle of mull, but I'll see them all at the gathering on the mainland anyway... time just isn;t long enough to go everywhere.... nor is the money there to afford us the ability..
but, what you have given to me is the ability to purchase one of the 8 days unlimited rail passes that we need. and THAT is HUGE..
I Love you all....
if ANY of you want postcards, PLEASE message me with your address and I'll happily enjoy sending you postcards of some of the most beautiful green lands of the Scottish and Cornish countryside ever seen......
with Love and much appreciation

Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland! - stonehenge
Thu, February 26, 2009 - 6:00 AMStonehenge is not far from where my mother grew up. It's roped off now but I have pictures of my brother and I, as small children, climbing all over the fallen stones with much abandon. Closer still is Avebury, possibly 5000 years older, which boasts a fabulous pub and still lets you wander around the stones freely. The vibes are amazing. According to my cousins, both places attract those weird hippie-types at certain times of the year =) -
-
Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland! - stonehenge
Thu, February 26, 2009 - 1:54 PMi am determined to be one of those weird hippie types soon. my brother moved to england more than five years ago, and i've never even been there! i am soooo going.
-
Re: let's send lyingbare to scotland! - stonehenge
Thu, February 26, 2009 - 5:23 PMJeannie, I never knew that, wow, we'll have to find time to enjoy a cocktail and you tell me of your memories, how very cool, I heard they had roped off stonehenge, but I didn't know Avebury was still open to climb upon, perhaps we'll have to see if time allows to make it there.. as long as its on the train route we should be good to go. the trains run every hour or 2..
one Gr grandparents were born and grew up in Cornwall England. and the other set of Gr Grandparents were born and grew up in Scotland on the Isle of Mull. then they all moved to Canada where my Grandpa was born, then into Michigan and on to California where i was Bred Born and raised. they just kept moving west till they ran out of land... LOL!!
I LOVE "weird hippie-types" :) can't wait to get there.. never been to England,. only to Scotland 15 yrs ago..
THANK YOU ALL for helping me make this trip reality.. and YES I shall take you ALL with me... I have the list with names that leslie sent..
There's even a MacKay in the bunch. Aye MacKay, I am friends with MANY of the Clan Mackay and they have such a nice tartan plaid.
Mwahhhhh!!!!

EVERYTHING is booked and paid for, save for the little things like food, and bus fare, and of course souvenirs,,
MANY MANY thanks to all of you for making this a reality, the donations and gifts and encouragement, knowing that some of you are from the very places I'm going, and have Scots blood yourselves, I TAKE YOU ALL WITH ME, if not in body, certainly in spirit, and close to my heart.
here's an article about my family, and one of the most important places on earth for me. I hope you enjoy it

I wish I could bring back gifts for each of you, but, I'll be posting LOTS of pics. Jeannie. we're stopping at Stonehenge, and Avebury and Amesbury. where was your family from, I'll try to get photos of it for you.
anyone else have requests. Please send em, I'll be printing out THIS thread and taking it along with me.
we'll be visiting my cousins in Cornwall UK in, St Austell, St Ewe, Par, Mevagissey, then visiting Arthurs Castle in Tintagel and Merlins cave IF its low tide, going to the Kirk to take photos of passed ancestors, then onto Stonehenge, and surrounding stones., then up to Scotland to visit the family and take part in the Biggest gathering in 250 yrs.
I'm hopeful I can make the climb up the Royal mile as we parade in our tartans. it's a long walk ALL UPHILL! huff huff!
Your love and interest made it possible for me to purchase one of the two unlimited rail passes we needed to make this possible...
and again, all I can say is THANK YOU, I love you all.....

Wed, June 17, 2009 - 6:50 PMin my opinion, some of the best souvenirs are stories that can be shared with friends and family.
those memories can be everlasting, while trinket and doo-dads usually get lost in the rubble of life.
here's to many fantastic adventures in scotland!
