I was in our local welding supply store recently and I met some reps who gave me a new card-
I guess their is an outfit who is selling women's gear.
Apparently they are out of California, and might do custom fits, too.

Re: Welding is for girls
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:21 AMvery neat. I know that in my line of work there are very few women, many times I the only gal in a dozen and finally ordered a set of women's gloves from mechanix and it's great to work with gloves that fit well, like a glove.
It makes a difference though I don't really appreciate that mechanix made a set of pink gloves as I try to not bring attention to myself as the only female.
I appreciate that it's utilitarian. -

Re: Welding is for girls
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:22 AMmy point is that for years I just bought gloves from home depot and they don't carry work gloves (that are not garden gloves) smaller than medium which is much too big for me. -
-
Re: Welding is for girls
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 10:53 AMI'll never understand that. I have fairly small hands, and have seen plenty of men who were shorter than me with smaller hands. At hardware stores and home depot.

Re: Welding is for girls
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 12:41 PMAnd then I fit perfectly into a mens medium glove.
...and wear a leather motorcycle jacket when I weld.
Super comfy. -

Re: Welding is for girls
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 1:16 PMI may have to go get myself a pair of womens gloves... Mine are OK, but really mens gloves are just a bit off...
personally i really wanted a pink welding helmet ;) i figure what could possibly be more obnoxious?? too bad i couldn't find one... -

Re: Welding is for girls
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 5:03 PMY'know those big-ass, multi-colored stick-on-the-shower-floor-so-you-don't-slip flowers?
Go stick some of those on your welding helmet.
No man will *ever* borrow it.
I might.
or, y'know, bananas.

Re: Welding is for girls
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 6:51 PMhow about spray paint that would be pretty rad for a pink helmet, Wait brain flash, Pink Camo print would be super rad.
That said i reallly hate all the 'ladys tools' that are coming out at the moment. I can understand having ladys sizing for things like gloves and stuff but those horrible pink tool kits make me feel ill. Can't we use normal tools? Also most of them are really crappy in quality.

Re: Welding is for girls
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 5:28 PMAh, yeah, all those tools are junk, and my husband is secure enough in his manhood that he'll lose those in his garage too. -

Re: Welding is for girls
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 9:49 AMI understand why some of the ladies want "Hello Kitty" and pink welding helmets and tools...
BECAUSE "WHY NOT" ?!
It's not just so the guys don't touch them... but because the guys have had all these OPTIONS!
They have been able to choose from variety of "guy designs" for soooo long! Why shouldn't there be a girl's choice?
And the REAL guys... they don't care anyway.
"Hello Kitty"'ll scream "MINE!" pretty darn loud and make sure you get it back.
Which is the point, isn't it?
So I think colors are important... but I have a bigger grief about SIZES of work wear.
Gloves are sooo important. Size small shock-resistant leather mechanix ! Yes!
Ladies leathers (pants) cut to hips would be nice. And what about for the curvey lady? We'll need those too.
And someday, I WILL find a pair of high heeled steel toe boots. I am sick on standing on boards in the shop to be a few inches taller.
Dang it...
and a welding helmet with a shorter cut on the neck so we can see, too! (Which, btw looks like it would go really well with the high-neck jacket from Angelfire). -

Re: Welding is for girls
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 9:53 AMand no- I was not talking about the "gardening" tools and "lafies tool kits" they sell at Home Depot or Lowe's or where-ever. I was talking about the professional tools that we buy and then color-code, when I was talking about color.
The little tiny "ladies hammers" they sell drive me crazy, too- but I HAVE bought them for my kids and my nieces and nephews. Most of them work great on bicycles and small jobs the kids can handle. -

Re: Welding is for girls
Sat, April 12, 2008 - 10:47 AMThe motorcycle mechanic who teaches tech classes around here marks all his (snap-on) tools with a ring of pink nail polish.
I mark mine (mostly craftsman) in purple.

Re: Welding is for girls
Sun, April 13, 2008 - 9:54 PMI just paint mine all the way damned bright pink.
NO ONE ever has tried to steal my La Femme Makita, or her batteries, or the charger. Badass.
(And yeah, "ladyTools" from Home Depot suck so hard...)

Re: Welding is for girls
Mon, April 14, 2008 - 7:34 AMYou can get electricians work boots. They have a taller heel and come in steel toe. Get men's size two down from your woman's size. I like my men's boots because with a high instep women's are too tight on my feet. -
-
Re: Welding is for girls
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 3:29 AMThat's a great idea! Electricians, huh? Nice. -
-
Re: Welding is for girls
Mon, April 21, 2008 - 11:16 AMIs there a particular brand of electrician's boots? I never heard of this category before.
