Our theme camp placement was denied. After 6 years of making the grade, suddenly, we're pieces of shit.

Our art car application was denied. So not only are we going to have to likely camp further out than we'd like, but we're denied an art car... that's already being consructed.

I'm not bitter. I'm just done.

Next year... Mexico!

I'm a little mystified as to why so many camps are getting rejected, considering all estimations seem to be that there will be a lot less people there this year. I'm sorry you didn't get placed, Dusty. And the art car on top of it is just salt on the would. That sucks.

Why are there estimations that there will be less people? What is it based on?

based on the fact they made the city smaller this year? I truly dont know. and I havent heard the tickets sales info. and maybe because we have moved back to the other site and because so many including ME complained about the MASSIVE size of center camp last year, and YES! it is VERY strange they denied so many camps I havent got a clue wht that is. but then I havent been to ANY of the meetings this year at all. so havent heard thw word on that. seemsstrange though.

The 4th level of tickets has not quite sold out yet (although the online sales have closed), which puts the number of tickets sold at under 36000, assuming that very few $300 tickets have sold.

I'm not sure of how many free, scholarship, and other tickets have been issued. In 2008 there were 3500 low-income and scholarship tickets, but I've never seen free (or previously earned) tickets broken out as a category. Assume that the total is about 6000.

This gives a an estimate of 42000 tickets sold or issued so far. Unless we get well over 7000 high-priced tickets sold the resulting attendance will be below 2008 (49,599 official attendance),

It's not hard evidence, but ticket sales at the gate will be resumed this year ($360 each). This does support the above estimates of low ticket sales.

Treat all of the above as being a rough cut. My own guess is that we will fall short of last year by several thousand, but it's not worth betting real money.

I don't understand why the BMORG is turning away Free Labor, Free Energy, Free Enthusiasm...it just doesn't make sense. Hundreds of people are wanting to GIVE to this event and they are being told NO. They could make an Outer Esplanade or give these people 1 day early entry passes or do SOMETHING to receive the gifts they are offering.

If I were to write a letter/email to BMORG, who/where would I send it?

      Neon,

You can email the Placement team (placement (at) burningman (dot) com).

I know they're probably overloaded with begging and complaints still, and I don't envy them that one bit, but I have been repeatedly gobsmacked about this clusterfuck. How on EARTH could they possibly have thought this decision was in any way reasonable especially with the lack of adequate forewarning .... gah.

And Dusty - seriously, we're shaking our heads as much as you. I was just reminded of this blog post on the Burning Blog about our camp - blog.burningman.com/ "Rathskellar Cultivates a Culture of Participation" - and it just got me all het up again: I mean HOW ON EARTH could we possibly have given any more??? And STILL not get placed???? It's just insane, and I am also sick of the assholes in the main BM tribe as well as on ePlaya blaming it on the camps, as if we were not worthy. I call total bullshit on that one: the decision on which camps has been arbitrary and the individual camps that have not been placed are NOT to blame for not being up to scratch. It could be anyone next year.

Yeah, I am still really angry. I was thinking of this being likely to be my last Burn, but this has totally clinched it. I just wish I had a better experience to show the two newbies I'm bringing this year all the way from Australia.

ok, just a thought, and I'm not very plugged in, so I may be way off base....but I belong to Disorient. We were high on the moop map in 2007, so we did not get esplanade placement in 2008. It was also an internal decision within the collective to avoid it.
In 2008, we were green on the moop map, and got the placement we wanted, 4:30 and Esplanade.
And I won't be there this year.
        • Re: My final burn... 2009

          Fri, August 7, 2009 - 3:55 PM
MOOP is not the reason camps did not get placed, there were camps with green ratings in 2008 that did not get placed, as well as totally new camps who had no rating previously. Another example of people trying to blame the camps who didn't get placed for not being up to scratch.

CAMPS WHO DID NOT GET PLACED DID NOT DO ANYTHING WRONG. Some did MORE than the majority of placed camps, too. It has NOT been a fair decision in any way. We have all been searching ourselves, and having other Burners look for blame in us on top of our own questioning, has been very disheartening.

it would be nice to have SOMEONE from the Org step up and have a say about how this was decided. I KNOW there have been MANY changes this year in the Org, perhaps it's going along with all the other changes, theres no rhyme or reason to what led to this change

              Fri, August 7, 2009 - 7:16 PM
Ya know, I really don't care why we were denied. And I also don't care that we won't have our art car. I just don't have time in my life to give a rats ass about the drama of the BMorg and how they run their show... because it is their show, after all, and I'll play by their rules, and have a good time no matter what.

Though honestly, if I didn't already have plane tickets and make commitments to go? I wouldn't even be going this year simply because their process has taken it's toll on my enthusiasm. But I am going, and it's going to be a fantastic burn, because it always is. It's fucking Burningman! And Burningman rocks. And my Burningman friends rock even harder.

Next year though... regionals baby, regionals. And save the big bucks for a real friggin vacation... maybe even one with a toilet that flushes. It'll be the first since 2000, since that's when I started going to BMan and every year all my vacation time and funds get sucked dry by the playa. Yeah, it's time.

Thanks BMorg for giving me the push I needed to get my head out of the playa!

              xoxo
              Dusty

ok, fine. they decide to reduce the number of theme camps. whatever. at least show some respect by lettiing applicants know AHEAD of time that this was in the cards.

treat the citizens of BRC with some respect for fecks sake! my guess is that many people would have rethought their plans or at least developed a plan B or C. arg.

dusty and other burning women - hope you have a GREAT burn despite this nonsense!!!

I'm out this year. I sympathize with you and my many long-burning friends whose camps were also not placed, it's a bummer.

No, after 8 burns, I decided to take my pennies and vacation time and travel somewhere new. BM used to be new! and exciting! and original! every year, but in recent years seemed to fade. I was especially disappointed last year with the art--while there were a few intriguing pieces, there just was't that much that made me go WOW. Oh, and the (partying, drinking, wahoo) frat boy contingent is reaching a tipping point--they're much harder to ignore, at least for me.

Maybe it's me. I could be getting jaded. And before anyone jumps down my throat, I agree that BM's what you make it. I had a load of fun volunteering at the airport and spending time with friends I see only at BM. Great folks. But at this point, I'm game for finally seeing them on their home turfs or in another, less punishing environment...like Mexico!

i appreciate that you acknowledge that it might be you... and i think that it's good to take a break when burning man -- or anything for that matter -- starts to feel old and tired. and everything eventually will. i love caviar, but if i ate it every day, it would start to feel ordinary. and when people start to get jaded about burning man... whoa, it is indeed time for a break. i've found myself on the playa with people who are whining about something, and i'm like, dude, if you are complaining about burning man, in the middle of all this other-worldly madness, then it is indeed time for a break.

i've been to the playa nine times, but not in a row, and once you've been a couple of times, it's never going to be quite the same, and honestly, if that's your vacation money and your vacation time, then investing that into some world travel or family time or whatever else you're hankering to do is a great idea.

have fun in mexico! hmmm. i haven't been to the yucatan in ten years, and now that i live in the south, i'm closer. hmmm.... maybe it's time for that kind of playa! ;^)

Well my entire camp has talked about a year off in the past, and instead pool our funds and rent a great house in Mexico for the week. Hell, we could probably even have a chef and masseuse on hand for the price! I'm sure we'll talk about it more this year. And if we don't do it? Then I'll go somewhere else!

Hey there Dusty. This is the stance I've taken this year. 18 or so DC Burners are heading down to a fab mansion for a playa vacation of a different sort. No Bmorg b/s, no dust storms, no sleep dep or decom sadness, but we do have two kitchens, a pool, a hot tub, 2-3 DJs, a masseuse, several top notch fire performers, a giant telescope, and an oceanfront property.

Nothing like switching it up a bit to keep life exciting. See you at PDF!

    here's one 'semi-official' version...

CAMP NOT PLACED? GET LISTED IN THE ALTERNATIVE WWW!

A MESSAGE FROM THE BLACK ROCK BEACON: With BRC in 2009 returning to the 2007 footprint, 130 camps were not able to be placed this year, due to the limited space available for registered theme camps.

These camps are now at a disadvantage with no listings in the official What Where When, so we wanted to do something to assist non-placed camps: the Black Rock Beacon, the Playa's daily independent newspaper, has offered to help in producing an Alternative What Where When for those not listed in the official guide.

The AWWW will be printed on-playa @ The Beacon. It will be open ONLY to camps who are not placed and events that are not listed in the official print WWW. This means if you are a rejected camp, a camp who's chosen not to be placed, or have decided last minute to hold an event or never thought you could get on-playa promotion because of the lack of address until after land grab - this publication is for you to help get the word out about your thang!

To submit a listing, please email alt.www.bm09@gmail.com before 26 August with your camp / event details. Then simply make sure to head down to PlayaInfo or the Beacon before 6pm Monday 31st to list your camp location, and you'll be listed in the AWWW with your camp address! We will have distribution of the AWWW in many camps on-Playa from Tuesday, directly from The Beacon, as well as on the Nowhere Omnibus. And a launch for the AWWW, the "Displacement Party", will be held on Wednesday evening around sundown @ Rathskellar, so you can grab a copy there too.

Donations are welcomed to defray costs of the AWWW, too. These are tax deductible and can be made at:

    www.blackrockbeacon.org - even $5 or $10 would help!

For more information and discussion, please visit the Tribe:

    tribes.tribe.net/toohotforburningman.

      Hey Lyen,

Just want you to know that the Black Rock Beacon is not an Org publication, it is independent, and nothing said by myself or the Beacon in regards to the AWWW is in any way official or semi official (though the Org has seen fit to assist with publication costs, which was kinda nice of them - but I'd still prefer answers). The AWWW is being put together by myself with assistance from the Black Rock Beacon along with help from anyone who wishes to volunteer on Monday :D

please note use of " " and qualifier of ~one~ version, not THE version
If it comes from a BManUpdate or sanfrancsico-annouce I tend to give it slightly more credit than random posts/emails from other tribes/villages. YMMV

I'm going to add here again, that I, too, am deeply disappointed with how the citizens of BRC, who are wanting to volunteer services in the form of theme camps, are being treated by the BMORG. First they turned away tons of camps, now they are refusing to give sufficient early arrival passes so that theme camps can set up before opening night. I think it's fine for them to change the rules, I just think they should TELL us, in advance. Is that asking too much?

I have put my heart and soul into designing and planning our theme camp for this year and now i'm being told that we will only receive 3 of our 7 requested passes. This basically makes it impossible to do what we said we are going to do.

If we had the information that they were only allowing 10% of the projected number of camp members to have early arrival passes, we would have planned this whole thing differently and could have made it work. As it is, we already have three vehicles loaded, in different cities, each with 1/3 of the materials and now the only way to get all three vehicles in is to have only one person in each vehicle, which is ridiculous, and can't happen.

At this point, I'm considering dropping out as a registered theme camp and doing our own thing. We could probably get better placement that way besides. I used to be afraid of burning bridges with BMORG, but, unless they step up and make it right, after this debacle, I don't ever want to be a registered theme camp again, so who cares if we burn the bridges?

Before I do that, though, I am still hoping to find 4 more early arrival passes. Anyone have any extras??????

If we can find a way to make this work, we will have an awesome Blacklight Beatles Cafe' with a Beatles Barbershop Quartet, coffee, tea, cookies, the daily news and a census station.

This will be my third burn and it's possible I won't be on the Playa next year. Seriously considering working overseas or joining the Peace Corps.

Let me just give my 2 cents worth from another organization that I belong to that camps A LOT--nearly every weekend from the beginning of March until the end of November--the Society for Creative Anachronism--the SCA.

Any large organization (the SCA is the largest historical recreation organization in the WORLD---several hundred thousand members) has screw ups and years where decisions made are the sort that make you go WTF? The SCA is almost entirely run by volunteers with just a minimal staff, much like I understand BMORG to be. It may be even more volunteer if the BMORG goes non-profit as I have heard rumored.

Stupid decisions are made with little explanation in this and other organizations. We've lost membership in the SCA over them.

What you have to do is step back and decide if the organization still stands for things you can support. And does it still satisfy whatever reason it was that you originally started going. Stupid decisions and rules come and go--what matters is how you feel about the people you attend with and the overall, longterm goals of the organization. If you can't support those goals any longer, then it's time to move on.

THe SCA has been around for over 40 years--people have raised their children going to events who are now have children at events. Some of the decisions made by its (volunteer) board over the years have been outrageously poor and badly thought out. But overall, I support what it is trying to do, and I still get my ya-ya's off by going to events. I've taken time off several times since my start, and I don't attend as heavily now--but the PEOPLE are what draw me back over and over.

Regionals are great in that they allow you to connect with those in your area on a more intimate basis--but what I like about Burning Man is that it draws people from all over the WORLD for a more or less common purpose. I just can't get that at a Regional.

Denying so many theme camps without prior warning or real explanation is a dumb decision. Your task is to decide if you can look beyond that to other years or if you have had enough and no longer support what happens on the Playa. Perhaps this is a great theme for you this year--Evolution. The BMORG evolves and so do all of we. Time to move on---or not....

    Mexico has some wonderful places.
