i started a notebook at the burn about what worked well for me and what didn't. also i wrote down stuff i saw others doing well that gave me ideas.
1. having a notebook that was really colorful and having pens close by all the time worked well.
2. i bought a little child's pottie chair since i have to pee a lot and often in the middle of the night. it was wayyyyyy better than a pee bottle. it even had a cute lil pink cushion so you didn't freeze your butt on the cold nights. just emptied it out each morning into a larger pee storage bottle.
3. labeling everything in zip loc bags worked great. when i was too tired to find stuff, i could go right to it.
any other ideas?

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Thu, September 10, 2009 - 8:53 PMI made a list of what I was going to wear each night when we went out. I packed each outfit with the last outfit going in first, along with all of the accessories, (wigs, stockings, arm warmers, etc.) and each night, just picked out the newest outfit from the top. It was so much easier than digging through everything in a bin!

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 11:12 PMOne of my friend's who uses Facebook kept a dryboard around his neck and would write his status throughout the day! He had a little box attached to it with paper and pens so that people could write their comments! It was really fun.
I keep my clothes and accessories in bins, but everything else went in boxes. I think from now on, I am going to use bins for everything! They really keep the dust out.
Another thing that I have used for two years is a cloth shoe holder. The kind that you hang over your closet door. It is great for putting small things or trinkets that you might receive. I put our car keys in one. Headlamps in one compartment, glasses in another... really anything small enough to get lost in your tent or trailer. Tubes of glowy sticks, goggles, the list goes on and on.

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 3:58 PMi brought plastic drawers that kept all my cookware/plates/cleaning stuff. it was amazing having things more organized- i'm going to bring more drawers next year for clothing and camp gear (goggles, head lamp, all the stuff you tend to lose once the sun sets)
i brought a pee bucket- i too find it a nuisance to pee into a funnel in the dead of night. too impossible! -

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Fri, September 11, 2009 - 4:20 PMOh yeah...plastic drawers are awesome! And get clean enough to not spread playa everywhere really easy, too.

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 2:00 PMOMG, I just got all the leftover food out from the RV. I think we ate about 10% of what i brought. And this was my 7th year...I still don't have the food thing down. But I think I've got it dialed in for next year...I wrote myself a note reminding me what we did and didn't use with the food. Now I don't have to rely on my awful memory. -

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 3:40 PMYeah, we brought way too much food. That will be the next thing to learn. -

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 5:14 PMI always say if you have about 4 days too 1 week food left you planned right. you never want to actually be out of food. In the event of an emergency you might need it -

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 7:45 PMI think we have about ONE MONTH of food left over!!!!! We'll see as we have already eaten it for a week and still have quite a bit to get through!

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Mon, September 14, 2009 - 8:14 PMLeft over food isn't a terrible thing. Have a big feast towards end of week for the perishables . . . and then give the non-perishables to DPW.
This year I left my week worth of non perishables towards the (arson started) wildfire victims who happen to be neighbors of a friend of mine.
Left the booze to DPW. -

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Tue, September 15, 2009 - 2:27 PMi will never ever ever ever EVER go to BM again without my own personal bike. ever ever ever.
Love the shoe organizer idea.
Less sweet food and more salty food, i knew that but then when i got to the grocery my sweet tooth took over. It goes into total retreat out there, though, and my body is just like SALT! FAT! SALT! FAT! MUST HAVE!!! Olives, V8, canned soup. Forget the LaraBars, the fruit (cept the pineapple, i was diggin the acidic stuff) - and also, i eat WAY less out there. have to remember that. -

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Tue, September 15, 2009 - 3:34 PMLOL, Caroline! I was the same way out there with the salty. In the default world, I hardly ever crave salt or sour things, always the sweet, but out htere sweet is almost gross! I craved olives, cup-o-noodles, Bloody Mary's were heavenly out there. So were Margaritas. Both are drinks I seldom order normally! And ice cold pineapple is the fruit from The Garden of Eden surely. The serpent must have know that! Tee hee!
And yes, one must have one's own bike for sure. It makes life so much easier.

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Mon, October 26, 2009 - 11:40 PMoh and caroline: re the personal bike thing...
my campmate had her bike either stolen or somehow lost it.
she decided next year to put a label on her bike that had her playa name and address in case it was found and could be returned. that way if someone (in a drug induced haze) took her bike without meaning to steal it, they could return it easily.

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Wed, September 16, 2009 - 9:51 AMI went kind of light on the food this year, and as much as I thought I brought about the right amount (not TOO much left over)..... I think next year I'll bring more. I didn't like having to make decisions and 'ration out' the really good stuff until later in the week, when it would taste better. Also, had a few panicky moments of "oh god did I bring enough food?" (not like we'd starve, but...you know?). Will err *slightly* on the side of more food next year.
I also have pretty much realized that no matter how much I make fancy complicated costumes, my favourite playawear is some variant of booty shorts, fishnets and a tank top, with knee-high boots. I did make/bring/wear a few other sorts of costumes, but the one skirt I spent the most time making, I didn't even bother to wear. Ha.

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Sun, September 20, 2009 - 10:34 AMYoga Mats and garden kneelers for tent users tops my list of what I did right this year. Especially if you use a smaller tent. It was RAD to come back to camp all spazzy and just squish into my tent and not scrape my knees.I used one fat garden kneeler on the entrance and a yoga mat before the bed and it was the coziest tent yet for me. (plus futon, yay) The playa is like pavement, these things saved my knees!!

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Mon, September 28, 2009 - 3:13 PMWe usually do a similar exericse when we're sitting in Exodus, but we literally drove off the playa this year and didn't have a chance!
We pack everything in labeled clear plastic tubs, with similar items packed together, which worked well for everyone but my husband who couldn't even find his glasses on top of his own head. lol
We tried on all our outfits at home, packed them in a cargo bag on the hangers, then pulled them out and stored them on a two-sided clothing rack. LOVE that thing. Makes it so much easier to see what you have and pick out outfits. Dirty clothes go in a pop-up hamper that goes back in the cargo back and straight to the laundry room.
We ate like kings and queens out there and didn't come home with very much, with very little cooking or clean up. Very happy with the food department this time.
I had battery powered LED xmas lights on my bike and up my bike flag, which everybody appreciated for finding me, our bikes and/or our group all week. It was a nice change from el-wire and my bike looked really good.
One thing that doesn't work..........forgetting the tent poles at home. Thank god I married MacGuyver!
The next time we go, we'll need a new shade structure, at least one new bike, new goggles, tent repair and other things. It was a rough year for our old equipment, but we were trying to do it on the cheap.

Re: tips for next year's burn - what worked, what didn't
Fri, October 23, 2009 - 9:13 AMafter 4 years of thinking about it, but never making it happen, i finally brought a small camping stool for inside my tent.
similar to this one. www.rei.com/product/765278
my little camping stool was so awesome for sitting while putting on makeup, pulling my boots on, and digging through bins.
also, it's great to have an empty wide mouth water bottle for those late night/early morning pee moments. i'm not into the pee funnel, but an empty jar, i can do. just gotta remember to empty it at the portaloo... -
