    Oh boy!

I'm not sure if I love 'em or hate 'em.
    Good find though!

I talked a stranger at TJ Maxx into buying those last month.

She was walking by them, paused at them and her eyes were moving on... So I said, "You AREN'T going to stop and put those on?! They are sooo you. AND they match your hair."

Well, she did- and then she wore them around the store the whole time I was there. Before I left, she said to me, "I am sooo buying these. I am convinced."

But those were $120. (((a lot more)))

This does bring up a newbie question ....

Why does everyone seem to wear boots and furry ones at that .... when it is soooo steamin' hot????

I'm sure there must be a reason that I just don't know about ....

Personally, they help keep the dust out- (( I'm not in an RV )).

My feet crack from the dry and alkaline dust.. they get really dry (like they do in a good Wisconsin/Minnesota winter) and split right open along any "footprint" line..
No amount of vinegar or treatment will do- The only thing that will keeping them moist in a boot, and keeping them from playa.

      Well- cozy is better!

I'd even add, keeping them in a clean sock that's in a boot! And change those socks at least once a day, if not twice! And when you change them, wash your feet with baby wipes and either lemon juice or vinegar (making sure to rinse with water, otherwise your skin gets sticky). Then just before putting socks on, apply moisturizer and let it dry.

I do that and have never had any problems with my feet whatsoever. Plus it's really nice to take a few minutes to concentrate on babying your feet, it feels GREAT after long days of walking and biking.

I never go to the playa without my tall John Fluevogs (thanks ebay) and my tall doc marten zips. I find that alternating keeps one from getting blisters.

Also, if you get boots that have speed laces (the metal tabs that you wind the laces through) they tend to rip the lining of long coats, so be careful!

This is ON the money about the lemon juice. I read about preventing playa foot before the '06 burn and made myself a little solution of lemon juice and water which I spritzed on my feet and elsewhere every time every day. It was WONDERFUL. Refreshing, good smelling, cleansing and my skin was in great shape when I headed home. Someone suggested adding some natural oils like chamomile too which was also lovely... But I guess all of that is useless without suitable boots, gloves at night, appropriate clothes (warm for night, breezy for day) and sunscreen.

      1) Comfort - the playa is hard and there is a lot of walking and dancing to be done - all week long. Even hiking boots seem to be more comfortable than tennis shoes... or any other shoe.

      2) Warmth - at night, it's nice to have furry boots to keep you warm.

      3) Fashion - 'cuz furry boots are fun? And platforms are hot! Heeled boots make your legs look longer, but I wouldn't wear them there!

      4) Convenience - UgH! boots or knockoffs are slip on type.. easy to get in and out of... especially for middle of the night potty runs.

Of course, you have to get boots that fit good, are well made and break them in before you hit the playa.

Wearing boots in the daytime is always off set by wearing less clothes !
Wearing them at night is... almost a necessity for me.

        5) Dust barrier... thanks Karine!

6 a) Foot protection - you will be amazed at how much stuff you didn't see.. until you stub your toe or trip right over it. And I'm talking hard stuff... like rebar sticking up in the ground, bikes, guy wires... especially at night. It's dark, dark, dark out there.

6 b) Foot protection - various... ahem... bodily fluids and such... from people that couldn't find/reach or porta potty in time. I mean, do you really want to find a playa puddle by stepping in it in your Teva's?

In my experience they keep Playa Foot at bay and they are pretty comfy.

The desert storm- type boots from my local army/ navy store (Supply Sargeant in Santa Monica, CA) did me SO well last year. They may not be the sexiest things on Earth, but they are *made* for those desert conditions-- day and night. I may spruce them up a bit with either spray paint or funky laces this year, dunno...

also, your feet may swell a bit out there, get a size or 2 up to accomodate the sox and swelling, or hurt like a mofo!

That brings up a question for me that I may just have to figure out but -- sometimes I have to go down a half of size or one size on boots (but not all the time). For those that have ordered boots online do you find they fit well for your normal size for a boot or does it just vary by the boot? May be a useless question for me to ask without a good answer but I'm curious about any experiences with buying boots online.

I've bought a bunch of boots on Zappos and they all have fit like I expected them to. They are from a few different companies so I think it really depends. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I got some gel inserts for my boots, and i'm SO glad i did.
I'm outfitting all my playa footwear with gel inserts this year.

Padded inserts are a must for me out there. It doesn't matter how cool my shoes are if they're not comfortable. I'll be miserable and won't wear them again.

Okay so I'm thinking with the idea that I normally end up with a 7 1/2 in boots even tho I wear an 8 that I should go ahead and order and 8 or 1/2 for swelling/socks/inserts? That's kind of what I'm gathering if i'm thinking along the right lines.
