so, i've been having major trouble finding boots. I've been looking all over the net, and most of the boots that are funky have ENOURMOUS heels that seem hazardous (a bit of a heel would be nice, though). I'm in los angeles and haven't had any luck in stores, either.
What's recommended in the heat? how high is the maximum height of hazard for boot heels?
i don't want to buy two pairs of boots, so what should i look out for? what's the most durable material, breathable, etc.
any help appreciated ladies!

Re: boot woes/questions part 2
Thu, August 4, 2005 - 6:45 PMhere's some links to pairs i liked i found on retro diva. thoughts?
it seems like the heels are a bit high on this pair...

a simpler version of the ones above, with shorter heel

and these seem the most practical so far (zipper, etc)

Re: boot woes/questions part 2
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 5:15 PMMy main thing with clubwear type boots is that the playa tends to eat the zippers. I had a great pair of Hot Topic-y boots last year that died on the niht of the burn. So, i guess I got a few days wear out of them (I alternated with a different pair, and some sneakers). Have others had this problem?
I don't mind my boots being playified, but how do you keep zippers from being destroyed? Laces can be such a hassle becasue they just start eating your hands once your hands are all dry.
Plus, I'm rangering this year so I'll be walking **a lot** and really don't want my feet to hurt. I was thinking Army surplus, but everyone's giving me shit about that, like have you heard how much soldiers complain about thier boots? But really, they have to wear them in the desert 24/7 the boots must be sturdy . . . and fairly comfy. Um . . . right? Or am i totally naive? -

Re: boot woes/questions part 2
Fri, August 5, 2005 - 5:22 PMI just bought a pair of Hot-Topic boots today. :-)
I wore zippered boots last year and did have some sticking issues. When I got home I used a spray that had orange extract or something in it to help break up the alkali build-up. Seemed to work okay.
I think this year I may bring a bottle of vinegar and toothbrush for some mid-week zipper care.
My boyfriend wears boots from the army surplus and doesn't ever complain about them so I would imagine they're fine ?? -

Re: boot woes/questions part 2
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 10:05 AMTrue. I WD40 my zippers before I go out and then make sure to try and clean the playa off when I take them off at night (or in the morning.) :) -

Re: boot woes/questions part 2
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 11:55 AMquestion about the WD40... do you have to worry about combustion in the heat? for example, I wouldn't sit a can of it outside in the sun here at home.
I just gave up the playa boot quest. I just got a pair of comfortable boots resoled for $10 instead. They are flat-soled, square toed, side zip, black leather Steve Madden boots. They've been my everyday boots for the past few years, casual-to-dress functional. I figure they should be easy to de-playafy afterward. I'm going to coat them with that waterproofing spray beforehand. and if they don't clean up in presentable shape, then I'll just resign them as bm boots and buy myself a new pair of "everydays". MUCH easier to find boots for everyday use than the perfect playa boot. -

Re: boot woes/questions part 2
Sat, August 6, 2005 - 7:12 PMWhat about Tri-Flow? It's a bike chain lube, and I think it comes in a little squeeze bottle (not under pressure... no *boom*)...

Re: boot woes/questions part 2
Sun, August 7, 2005 - 6:44 PMOn the subject of sticky boot zippers, I found a great solution last year by accident. I just put some of my super hand lotion (Udder Balm) on them and they worked like new!
I now swerr by it. It works on tents zippers, too, if you get that problem too.
