I recently got married and am wondering how wedding (or other rings) hold up on the playa? I'm considering just not wearing it for the week, but I've gotten attached to it. It's just a plain white gold band, so no stones to worry about.
Anyone have any experiences with this?

Re: Rings and the playa
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 11:01 AMWell, I don't wear anything important to me at any burn, and I've been told specifically not to bring things you care about to the Playa. You just never know...apparently the sand is fine, like baby powder, not normal sand, so I wouldn't think it would get scratched...but I'm sure someone with actual experience can answer better!

Re: Rings and the playa
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 2:25 PMAs long as you feel it will stay on your hand (I'm assuming it usually does) then I'd go ahead and wear it. The dust won't do anything to it in terms of scratches, but it's highly alkaline so not sure what that would do to gold. But I really don't think you'll have any issues...

Thu, July 23, 2009 - 4:10 PMdiamonds are one of the hardest substances on earth, remember?? as long as the settings are strong, they won't be harmed by playa dust.

Re: Rings and the playa
Sun, August 16, 2009 - 6:37 AMlast year my hands felt cruddy enough without the rings trapping that dust against my skin...my husband and i left ours in the van. this year we're leaving them with a jeweler, so when we get home they are clean and polished. we might make this a yearly thing!

Re: Rings and the playa
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 12:05 PMI've always worn my wedding ring (plain gold band) on the playa and never had any problems.
My ring never leaves my finger, at home or on the playa, but I have heard several tales of woe from people who take their rings off to sleep/shower/etc and than lose them.
Even if it's just in your tent, something the size of a ring is REALLY easy to lose, and exceedingly difficult to find. You can end up not being able to find it, freaking out all week worrying you lost it, before finding it when you're packing to go home. (This happened to a friend of mine last year: yes, she got her ring back, but she had a bad time worrying all week).
So yeah, if you leave it on all the time and it's tight enough not to fall off, don't worry about it, but if you plan on ever taking it off, I'd leave it at home!

Mon, July 27, 2009 - 4:22 PMI'm leaving mine at home, though I've already lost two diamonds in less than a year! I bought a sparkly costume band to wear instead. I'd just rather not worry about it.

Sun, August 16, 2009 - 9:03 AMNEVER take anything camping you don't want to lose.
It's only a week--you'll get by without it.

Re: Rings and the playa
Sun, August 16, 2009 - 11:02 AMI usually wear my engagement ring and my wedding band on the same finger.
During the burn, the engagement ring full of diamonds and sapphires stays home with the hubby for safe keeping.
My wedding band is plain with no stones so I can wear it at my work which can be labor intensive, lifting and moving heavy equipment.
If it can handle my job, my wedding band can handle burning man. Plus if it should somehow get lost, I wouldn't be quite as upset as I would be with my engagement ring.
I'd be bummed but not devastated.
