Hola girls !!!
This year I ve decided to braid my hair for bm and I ve never done it before.
I ve been researching and looking at different reviews and places but still haven't made up my mind.
Any word of advice ? Please :)
There is a place called La Mystique in Hayes Valley that gets awesome reviews but some people say it's way overpriced.
What's the sane amount to pay for braiding in SF?
Thank you all.

Re: BM Braids
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 9:06 AMIf you are getting hair extensions along with your braids, I suggest using human hair. It costs more, but it is not as heavy as the synthetic braids and not as itchy. My second year, I had braids put in and got them really long and used the synthetic hair. I wanted to look "cute." I was so uncomfortable. They pulled on my scalp. The hair streaming down my back itched and irritated my skin, so I would wear them tied up on top of my head. Looking back at my pictures, they looked ridiculous!
But if you are not wearing extensions, then it should not be bad at all. Down here in San Diego it costs around $100.00 and up in "the ghetto" to get braids and to quote my daughters about who does the best job, my youngest daughter (my girls are half African-American) told me, "Mom, you need to go to the Africans for your braids." That is what I did, and it hurt like hell. Worse pain I have ever had, worse than childbirth, worse than getting a tattoo. But those braids stayed in perfectly the whole time I was out there in the desert.
I am sure that there are individual women who would do your braids for you for less $ if you ask around. Maybe someone here on Burning Woman is in your area who could do them for less $ or maybe barter something.
I still love braids, but now I have these yarn falls that I use and they are lightweight and are easy as pie! That is what I am using this year.

Tue, July 21, 2009 - 9:59 AMTalk to HunnyDu on this tribe...I'm not sure if she does straight braiding too, or if she just puts in dreads and yarn and whatnot. (There's a thread on this tribe about it!)

Re: BM Braids
Tue, July 28, 2009 - 5:03 PMI have some yarn falls and they are great! They are super light, and they have elastics to attach them to your hair. They felt very secure when I wore them. Best of all, they did not bother my scalp and my hair looked cute.
I highly recommend them!

Tue, July 21, 2009 - 3:35 PMmasha - what is the place in hayes valley charging? and is it just to braid your own hair or adding in extentions like arell mentioned?
my neighbor had hers done at a place on Fillmore in the lower Haight by a lady named Aitu... she thinks it was maybe $80? can get your more info if you need it...
ps - arell, i didn't think your braids looked ridiculous when you piled them atop your head! but i do remember you being in a lot of pain from them... not good! -

Re: BM Braids

Re: BM Braids
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 3:51 PMMasha thanks for posting this. I wanted to braid my hair this year also, but my boyfriend said he thought it would look too "ghetto or trashy hood" and wouldn't look good.
Is there a difference between the sizes of braids and maybe that effects the look? -
-
Re: BM Braids
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 4:39 PMIt really is all about your own preference. I have seen the big chunky braids and I think that they look great! But so do the tiny braids.
You can also get your own hair braided close around your head and then have little tiny braid extensions attached to them, so that your real hair is not used at all. I have no idea what they cost.
You cannot look too ghetto at Burning Man. Or trashy.
Trashy=BurningMan=Good ;-)

Re: BM Braids
Tue, July 21, 2009 - 4:55 PMI ve seen a lot of my friends do braids and they looked amazing..i post their pix if they allow later on.
They were done by some lady in Oakland and i dont think she is doing it anymore so i started looking around here in the city.
Last year my hair ended up looking and feeling like crap...braids make ur playa life a lot easier...at least thats what i ve been told.
and it does not look ghetto at all...they even had the ends curled and added colors it was great. -

Re: BM Braids
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 10:48 AMI love washing my hair on the playa (and our camp has a great shower), so I just do two pigtail braids during the day, comb it out early evening, shower, and put it back in the two braids. Works fine.
But, if you're going low-maintenance or don't have a shower, definitely gettin' your "hair did" in braids is the way to go. -

Re: BM Braids
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 11:12 AMI cannot say i had a horrible time with my hair not being braided. And yes taking a shower daily is just great in general. But my hair is long and if dont brush it at least 3 times a day it gets all messy and i wont be able to brush through it without ripping hald of it out. :)
So i am gonna try braids this year...see if i dont come out bald after taking them off ;)
PS Can anyone tell me how heavy the braids are? -
-
Re: BM Braids
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 2:54 PMIf you get extensions and they are synthetic, they can be VERY heavy. It depends on what you get...

Re: BM Braids
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 3:37 PMIMHO Braids hurt and itch like hell. I only went one year with them thinking that they would be easier, blah blah blah....
I have an injured neck from several years ago and the weight was a seroius hinderance. Put your hair in two ponylaits braid, and wrap up short. get those cool yarn clip on things or make your own.
I am on the DPW crew and even though I'm out there for 7 weeks, I wouldn't braid my hair again....
That's just my 2 cents -
-
Re: BM Braids
Wed, July 22, 2009 - 4:32 PMyah thats what i am afraid of...the heaviness...and of course the itchiness...
now i am not sure i even want them. the last thing i want to care about on the playa is my hair ..:)

Re: BM Braids
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 9:02 AMIf you get wool dreads put in (see HunnyDu's thread) they're not heavy at all. -

Re: BM Braids
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 9:42 PMI didn't have braids my first year and with fine textured hair had more trouble with my hair than I wanted. I've had them every year since.
The Pain - depends upon your braider. Mine was very good at making tight braids, without making them toooo tight. She knew they only had to last a few weeks, not 8. Take advil while you get your hair braided. Take it after.
Itching - Sea Breeze and water in a spray bottle helps with the scalp itching. It also cools you off when you spritz your head on the playa. would say 25% sea breeze / 74% water. Your mileage may vary.
Heavy? Yes, there are 2 standard lengths of hair you can buy - long and short, sorry, forget the actual measurements, but it's obvious when you go shop a beauty supply. Shops near me have actually stopped carrying the long hair version.
Color. You can get colors that blend / match with your natural hair color to braid in. Get the hot pink, blue, orange, green and make seperate braids.. and either attach them with a rubber band or tie them on to your braids. Tie in ribbons, yarn and other fun stuff. This is how I can come back to my corporate job with braids, sans all the excitement.
Also.... braids are a great personal Air Conditioning system on the playa. Dump water on your braids and it keeps you cool for quite a while.
my 2 cents..... -

Re: BM Braids
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 9:45 PMWhoops! Editing....
25% Sea Breeze / 75% Water. Takes out the 1% mystery.
Although I've had the long braids for the past 4 years, I am considering the short braids this year. Less heavy and also, easier to keep out of my guys face when we sleep!!!
But the long braids... easy to tie up on top of your head.. and you stay cool that way too! -

Re: BM Braids
Thu, July 23, 2009 - 9:57 PMGood to know about the Sea Breeze, Bunny! Wish I would have thought or knew about that in '07!
Thanks!

Re: BM Braids
Fri, July 24, 2009 - 9:35 AMWow ,
Thats a lot of new info Bunny . Thanks a lot . I think what i am gonna do is go to a salon and talk to the people who do braids. And then make up my mind.
I like the idea of dumping water on ur braids to stay cool !!!!
Also i heard that its better to have someone come to your house rather then going to a salon..... because it takes from 6-8 hrs...
Anyone done that ?

Re: BM Braids
Wed, August 26, 2009 - 1:46 PMTell the lady that you don't want to add a ton of hair to the braids, and they they don't have to stay in very long. That way, they stay lighter whether you use human or synthetic hair, and that they don't make them super tight. Most african-american ladies who get their hair braided want it to stay in 8-10 weeks so it gets done very tight so that it lasts longer, but you don't need this and tell your stylist so.
I always use hair oil on my braids, never try to undo them while hair is wet, wash your hair after they are out. You only need to clean your scalp with SeaBreeze or witch hazel and you will be happy with that. Then make sure to use sunscreen on your scalp. Use hair oil to help detangle as you de-braid...

Re: BM Braids
Sat, July 25, 2009 - 10:59 AMHI,
Everyone is different...I don't think anyone will ever get one answer and one answer only when asking something about burning man.
My personal experience is that I cannot SURVIVE the playa without braids. My hair gets so disgustingly gross within hours of being there. It's the one thing about the playa experience that I just can't handle, gross playa hair on my head
BUT, if my hair is braided...no problem! I do it myself (or have a friend help), I braid it randomly, all different sizes and it works and looks fine. Some years I have had extensions and I LOVE them, just make sure they are not put in super close to the scalp...if they are down a bit they are comfortable. This year I don't have the extra money for that so I'm going without 'em. But regular braids are just fine and they don't have to cost a cent.

Masha...i've made those yarn type falls before, i just attached the yarn and ribbon to some elastic ponytail holders, and then wrapped them around my hair buns or ponytails...
they're fun, and fairly easy to make, just take some finagling to get them to fall correctly etc.. -
-
Re: BM Braids
Mon, August 3, 2009 - 12:15 PMYou can also attach falls to plastic or wide fabric headbands, if your hair is too short for buns or ponytails. I haven't tried it but I've seen some really cool ones.

Re: BM Braids
Wed, July 29, 2009 - 11:57 PMWhen i went last time I just had two braids, worked fine.
This year my hair's much shorter (inch above the shoulders, super curly) so not sure I can do much with it, though the braids sound like fun. Was hoping to maybe wrap one or two ribbons/yarn into my hair but since there's only about 4-5in of hair not sure it can be done. Anyone know if thats possible, or how? -
-
Re: BM Braids
Fri, July 31, 2009 - 3:25 PMI had fairly short hair one year and braided in ribbons into little short braids all over my head. Kept my hair under control and was colorful. I took it out after 3 days because my head itched so much. Ended up with an awesome afro until I washed it :) Otherwise, I just keep my bangs back with fun little kiddie barrettes and clips and wear bandanas or hats. -

Re: BM Braids
Tue, August 4, 2009 - 3:53 PMThey're right about the falls, they're super easy to make and stay in place really well. I take a full skein of yarn - I love the kinda curly Lionbrand - Homespun stuff, 2 of those big thick hair elastics (the no-ouch kind without the metal) measure out the length of yarn hair I want and just tie them to the rubberbands in clumps of yarn (7-8 strands) down to single strands. They're easy to make, made a few pairs yesterday while watching tv and cheap (about $4-6 for a pair since I use an entire skein of yarn) and stay in really well especially if you can put your hair up in 1 or 2, or more, little buns. -

Re: BM Braids
Wed, August 5, 2009 - 12:13 PMwhoa !
That easy ?
Is it some special kinda or yarn ? or i can go to any art/craft store and pick whatever i like??
Thanks for this info...i mean if i can make my own costume i can probably make my own hair as well ;) -

Re: BM Braids
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 3:51 AMAfter years of brutal brush-out post-BM, I braided my own hair last year, between packing & such. You'll want a plastic comb with a pointy stick on the end, for sectioning, and little silicone ponytail holders [available at drugstores]. Not as pretty as the fun colors, but barely any itch, not too heavy, and quite easy to care for!
I've just added a photo to my personal album, showing my braids on Friday night of last year. They held up pretty well!
My arms got tired, though, being up so high, so if you can trade with a friend, that would make it easier! -

Re: BM Braids
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 11:15 AMI just came off of 4 months of synthetic-braided hair- best thing I've ever done. It was almost never itchy. i'm now HATING having to comb every day.
I think there are several issues:
-are you doing cornrows where there's hair tight against your scalp? you can't really scratch under the cornrow without disrupting it a little so that's what people seem to get most upset about. Braids that don't involve cornrows or other styles that put hair tight against your scalp are a lot easier to deal with and easier to make yourself.
-there are various things you can put on your scalp to relieve itch. I took some peppermint essential oil (DO NOT get in eyes), put a shitload of it into my shampoo, and sometimes even just sprinkled it on the itchier spots in the shower, then washed it out after it started to 'mint burn' (think Dr Bronners only stronger). yes, I smelled like peppermint for an hour or two, but it made the itch disappear more so than just regular washing does. there are also lots of african hair products in beauty supply stores that supposedly help with itch. tea tree oil and other aromatic 'stingy' essential oils will probably all have this effect.
-if you have synthetic hair added to your braids rather than just braiding your own hair or using 'real' human hair (which is from China and is often obtained unethically, by the way, such as from prisoners or worse), it helps hold your braids in place and you can maintain braids with much less unraveling. They're supposed to last a couple of months, I made mine go a lot longer with some wrapping of ribbon close to my scalp as the hair grew out. And they come in awesome colors that resist bleach if you bleach your roots, or sun-damage, etc. -
-
Re: BM Braids
Fri, August 21, 2009 - 11:23 AMincidentally, here's what the top of my synthetic hair looked like after a few months of adding ribbon 'wraps' (it combed out OK too):
people.tribe.net/girlmark/...f8202550fd
I think next time , I'm going to braid in some ribbon along with the synthetic (or just with my own hair), and leave a long tail at the base of each braid, so I can keep wrapping as needed. It comes out really easily with a crochet hook. By 'wrap' I mean like a little kid 'hair wrap', those summer camp things where kids tie embroidery floss into one long strand in their hair (not sure if anyone knows what I'm talking about)> I did it with wide ribbon from Michael's or wherever, which made it really easy to remove and was extremely cheap stuff to use.
