Perfect Playa Boots revisited

Hi Ladies -

I'm trying to plan in advance this year and need some help on the perfect playa boots. I know this was talked about in detail last year, but I'm hoping people have some new suggestions and experiences after the 2005 burn.

I'm especially in love with the suede boots with fur trim such as:
www.rivithead.com/product_i...cts_id/135 or the version with a higher heel - wondering if anyone has either style? the platforms seems like they might not be the most comfortable style...

I really dig these boots www.zappos.com/n/p but they are impossible to find in black online :(

any other good suggestions for suede/fur boots, or just anything really cute and super comfy??

Thanks!

i have a pair of the second kind in black. they are super comfy (i wear them interchangebally with my slippers) if you manage to find a pair that are black, make sure to get them a size smaller than you normally do. Every girl i know that has them has had to get a size smaller. the top pair are fairly common and i have lots of friends who have them. they love them, but of those that have both kinds, i think they prefer the latter pair.

    peace

Along those lines, anyone have suggestions for those of us who have large calves? Most normal sized boots don't fit over my calves. Even as a kid riding horses I always had to have my boots stretched.

I always have to wear lace up. My calves have been big my whole life. I even remember back in the 70's when those brown lace up boots with the beige rubber soles came out I was thrilled! Drove my mother nuts until she got me a pair. Wore them everyday. Plus I'm short, so I'm always looking for mid-calf height lace ups.

A little bit on the pricey side - but, these are now my ultimate favorite boots ever!!

        oakley.com/o/o1703d

They are mid calf, lace up - with a special treat... an inside full length zipper!!
(Unfortunately - not seen in this picture.)
You lace them up once to make them comfortable and then zip on - zip off!!

Solid all terrain sole. Super, super, super, super comfy!
I wear them out dancing all the time - I get tired before my feet do!

Can only order from the online store - no store carries them.

Wow. Those are amazing. I like how the back is lower than the front. It would probably come just behind my knee. Hmmmmm. Do you bring those to the playa?

Anything you take to the playa runs the risk of being destroyed. With that said I brought my favorite Fluevogs with me and cleaned them up really good when I got home. The only way anyone knows I took them to BM if I tell them. I'll be taking them again this year too :~)

I have the higher platform version of the cubby in white and a few other furry platform boots, all of which I picked up from www.retrodiva.com

            Dusty,
The Oakley assault boots won't come to the back of your knee - unless you have really, really, really, short legs! They don't come to the knee in the front - probably mid calf in the back.

I understand about not taking boots to burning man that also cost the price of a ticket. I just got mine two months ago and they are still super nice (except for one tiny spot of glow in the dark paint)!! They are leather and should clean up nicely - but, honestly I'm not sure if I will take them to BM. They might stay home.

Whatever boots you get - break them in before you go! Insoles are really nice to have. I wore my black leather workboots most of last burn and they worked fine - with the right socks AND frequent change of socks. I bring twice as many socks as a normal person - but, clean fresh socks are a real treat any time of the day.. or night!

i have really big calves and haven't worn high boots for years -- but my british sister-in-law turned me on to this site which actually custom makes their boots in whatever calf size you need! how cool is that? and i just checked and a lot of their stuff is 1/3 off --

        duoboots.com/index.php

though for the playa, if your feet can take it, a cheap jungle boot from a place like this www.americanarmynavy.com/ will work great for the playa -- and then when they're ruined, it's not so much of a loss.

i just got reinspired (plus i have a little extra cash now) and went on the duo site and ordered a pair of midcalf brown suede boots -- which are half-price, so even with the shipping, it's not bad -- they're not playa wear, but they look like they can be everything-else wear

you mean the duoboots? those, i don't know -- mine were shipped from england just a couple of days ago. i can't wait to get them!

the army jungle boots i got from the army nave store weren't comfortable for me at all because they had no support -- but now i have a good pair of orthotics, so i'm hoping that'll make a big difference... because army boots are perfect with petticoats ;^)

How are Doc Martens out on the Playa?

I have several pairs that I have considered bringing, but I just want to be comfortable.

Also, I keep hearning *Take care of your feet.* what, besides comfort do I need to know about my feet?

And of course, don't forget your Body Shop Peppermint Foot Lotion. I wouldn't go to the playa without it!

And more clean socks than you think you could possibly need. A friend of mine has a neat trick... he brings all his old socks to the playa and after he wears them he burns them. Less laundry to lug home!

I LOVE anything the Body Shop makes...I will rememeber that foot lotion.

Have you tried their Hemp foot rub? I use the hand cream, but not the foot yet.

I never felt like I got "playa foot" per se. Walked around in flip flops a lot and did not get any blistering, burning, peeling or cracking like I expected. However, once I came back, the skin on my toes started peeling off. And kept peeling. As soon as one layer was gone, another would peel off. This continued for about 6 weeks. Didnt hurt, was just really freaky.

A friend of mine had no trouble on playa either, and made fun of me that I washed my feet so much. She kept saying 'I'm fine, no playa foot'. When she got back, she broke out in a nasty rash that spread up her calves and didn't go away for weeks. Of course, I was fine :-) Needless to say, the next year, there she was, right beside me, tending to her feet every day.

Sorry, we've gotten a little off topic here. Speaking of topic, and boots, anybody hear that song "Hot Topic is Not Punk Rock"? Heard it on the radio the other day and laughed. I love it. Surely, they're not talking about anybody we know though :-)

Doc martens are very good, provided that they are already broken in! I have a pair of tall zip docs that I wear every year, and they have served me well. I have pretty much worn nothing but those boots. I recommend also some slipon shoes of some sort that you can ease into for early morning coffee or potty runs. We travel with spray bottles of lemon water and vinegar water. If you wash your feet briefly with either of those, rub on any THICK lotion that will soak gradually into your feet after putting on socks, you will be in good shape. With boots, I have noticed that my calves sweat, and it feels good to apply powder before slipping on those tall boots.

so far, my duo boots RAWK!!!

first of all, i put them on -- like on my leg with my thick ankles and huge calves, and they fit. they're suede with a plush lining and it feels amazing on my legs.

the support is ok, not the best, but enough that i haven't felt a need to put my orthotics in, which is good because they don't fit ;^)

my sister in law says she's practically worn out her duo boots, they've been so comfortable. so i say go for it -- high quality workmanship and made to order for your calf size? a dream come true.

the report boots that are stated in the original post that i love oh so dearly are lace up with a zipper on the side. I have fairly normal calves and the ties are sinched as tight as they can go before crossing, so i imagine that there is pleanty of room for expansion.

        > the report boots that are stated in the original post

I bought a pair of the Sleigh boots in black back in October. I *adored* them - until the week before last, when one of the heels collapsed. And then I found out, while negotiating replacements with the company, that they're no longer available in black. They sent me replacements in a similar style, but they don't fit my calves. :( Sad for me.

        I miss my boots.

So I just found the report sleighs (see original post) that I had been drooling over on ebay for $20 a pair!!! Got them in Black and Stone - I can't wait to get them!!! *yay*

Pretty limited sizes available in Black, but maybe some of you will feel as lucky as me!

I have these boots img.hottopic.com/is/image/.../303220_hi but with two straps instead of 5. I got them at Hot Topic on sale for $50 or so. They're not leather, but they have a steel toe, and they have withstood two burns, Earthdance, Fuente Eterno, hiking, Disneyland, and a lot of clubbing. The side zipper is really starting to go, and the playa never totally came out from their first year, but it was a great deal.

The first year I wore these boots I got the worst blisters. Last year I picke up a pair of Dr. School's foam inserts for $3 and they did wonders. No blisters at all, and very happy feet. I probably would have been even more comfortable with gel inserts.

I'd like to remind everyone to remember that these boots are heavy and unless you're used to walking and dancing miles in them, your legs will hurt a lot on the playa. Those black suede shoes will be playa white in 5 minutes and it will never fully come out. Vinyl is also very warm, which makes those big boots great for night time, but not always the best for the heat of day.

That's my challenge. I'd like to find boots that are good for day and night. So leather/canvas combinations are good. I'm not so sure that I'd want to bring a $250 pair of boots to the playa though! Hell, I'm couldn't even afford $250 boots, who am I kidding.

Me too, baby. I have that first pair & they have seen 3 Burns as well as several Country Faires & lots of local hoo-haa. They stand up well, they are very comfy & they zip over my calves which puts them in a class of boot all by themselves.

Does anyone have these boots? www.rivithead.com/product_i...cts_id/217

I feel like perhaps they aren't as good b/c it looks like a flat sole. I tend to wear heels over platforms in general so I'm not really sure how comfy they would be... does anyone have experience with the comfort of a curved vs. flat bottom on the platforms? and are platforms really more comfortable than chunky heels?

      Thanks!

        Tue, March 28, 2006 - 12:25 AM
Those look like they will be uncomfortable. it depends on how much you will wear them. I tend to take 1 or 2 pairs of shoes and wear them constantly, and I know those boots would have me begging for death by day 7 on the playa. The curve of the arch will also force your foot into the unnatural position it assumes when you wear high heels. It will put stress on your arches and your calves. I vote for flat soles.
        • Re: Perfect Playa Boots revisited

          Tue, March 28, 2006 - 1:24 PM
i agree. super flat soles won't roll with you when you walk, and you don't want anything with too big a toe-to-heel height difference.

i have these and i LOVE them, wore them all week at last burn, day and night, wear them all the time still, out dancing, to work, you name it.

My demonias have a 5 inch platform, NOT a heel, but a full sole platform and I found them about as comfy as wearing espadrilles, not as comfy as flip flops or tennies, but nowhere near as mean as high heels.

A little lesson to be learned from my pain. . . . not the feet or legs, but the head! Last year after we finished setting up camp, I spent most of my time wearing 5/5.5 inch platforms (various demonia furry boots and a pair of sandal demonia). I'm already 5'10" before the platforms go on. . . . .well when I visited the port-o-poties I forgot to duck when coming out and BLAM, smacked my forehead on the top of the door frame. Luckily I didn't have my goggles on my forehead or I would have broken them. Also, luckily this was during the day so I didn't have my headlamp on either. . . . breaking that would have sucked tremendously.

I'm especially in love with the suede boots with fur trim such as:
www.rivithead.com/product_i...cts_id/135 or the version with a higher heel - wondering if anyone has either style? the platforms seems like they might not be the most comfortable style... >>

It's The Boots of Great Stompyness! I have the high heeled version of those boots (seen here:www.rivithead.com/product_i...ts_id/716) and I love them. I found them in a second hand store for almost nothing, so I had to buy them. I think they are comfy, and have lots of time wandering about in them. I can't wear them for a week straight though, and tend to spend my days in ultra comfort shoes, and then my nights in kick ass costume shoes (like those boots)

The best tip I have for making most any shoes more comfy, go to the drugstore and buy a pair of gel inserts (or a couple pair in case you misplace one, they're cheap, and worth it) You can transfer the inserts from shoe to shoe, and can really salvage a pair of shoes you thought were unwearable. I've worn my Boots of Great Stompyness with, and without the inserts, and have found that without the inserts, my feet are dead the next day, but with the inserts, I'm good to go.

If you're unsure of new shoes, wear them a lot before the event. This way you'll know what to expect, and not kill yourself on the playa.

      i second the insoles recommendation!

i have gel ones that are great, and one foam pair by Profoot - i think they're called 2 oz. miracle - that are totally amazing. i love them. i can dance all night in my platforms and remain blister-free and walking happy the next day. i swap them between whichever pair of boots i'm sporting. BEST $5.99 i EVER spent!

i suggest getting the men's ones if you have big stompy boots, they're often cut really big around the toes and the women's insoles are shaped more for girly shoes, so they'll slide out of place and be annoying.

i have those camel 311 furry/suedelicious boots too - they rock! and krissy i LOVE the name "boots of great stompyness" - definitely adding that one to my vocab :)

recently i've been surfing www.zappos.com but haven't had any luck. it's a similar site with the free shipping to and fro' thing.

I like the super-high platforms without the super tall give-you-plantar-fasciitis heels. I figger the higher I can get up off the dust of the Playa, the better my lungs will be at the end of the week. Being <5'4", it's a concern.
