The Butterfly Project

In an effort to remember the 1,500,000 children murdered in the WW II Holocaust, the Holocaust Museum Houston is collecting
1.5 million handmade butterflies.
The butterflies will eventually comprise a breath-taking exhibition for all to remember. Please facilitate the
“I Never Saw Another Butterfly” activity and collect as many handmade arts-and-crafts butterflies as possible.
Butterflies should be no larger than 8 inches by 10 inches.
Butterflies may be of any medium the artist chooses, but one-dimensional submissions are preferred.
Glitter should not be used.
Send butterflies by June 30, 2008, with the following information included:
Your name,
Your organization or school,
Your address,
Your e-mail address, and
The total number of butterflies sent.
If possible, e-mail a photograph of your butterflies, to butterflyproject@hmh.org.
Mail or bring your butterflies to:

and it sounds like it will be a very powerful display. I have a plan to do a similar project with safety pins for victims of domestic violence...having a concrete physical object really helps to understand the vastness of the numbers involved. if you haven't seen the film about the paper clip project I highly reccommend it, very touching.
I'm going to share this with my daughter's class at school, her first grade teacher will take them all to a butterfly garden for a field trip soon, and this might be a nice tie in with that. thank you for sharing :)
