So my husband and I just found out that we're expecting! It's a bit of a surprise, but we're rolling with it. We had made plans to go out to the playa this year; this will be our 6th Burn. I am, however, nervous about being pregnant -- I will most likely be 4-5 months when we go out there (haven't gotten an accurate timeline yet). Next week, I'm seeing my OB for my first appt and I plan on asking her about it then. And after google searching and finding this tribe, I figured a few wise Burning Women would know a thing or 3 about being pregnant on the playa. Anything you could share with a newbie would be lovely. I've read the stuff on the Burning Man site.
(Just a warning to all of you on The Pill: Take that damn thing every single day!)
(Also, sorry about the new account; I went anonymous because I'm not quite ready to share the news with my RL friends yet.)

Re: pregnant on the playa?
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 10:33 AMI just had a baby last July. I had to miss the burn, with a 6 week old baby, it just would not have worked. But we will be bringing him this year. So I can’t say first hand, but this topic comes up every year. Search this tribe and the Burning Moms tribe for past treads.
You have been enough times that you know what to expect as far as the heat, dust, noise and camping thing. At 4-5 months I felt great. It was the best part of pregnancy, past the morning sickness, big enough to show and have people love your belly, but still not so big as to be uncomfortable. I went to several parties at this time, including some camping. It will be all about how you feel and if you have any complications. Things to consider are camping with an RV to have a place to get out of the heat and dust, also an art car, or some other transportation (that dose not involve you riding a bike). Of course it will be a different experience than your past years, less party more arty (would be my guess). You will have to take it easy at the hottest part of the day and keep really close tabs on your hydration level. With a bit of consideration before hand I think it would be a wonderful experience.

Wed, May 7, 2008 - 11:00 AMThere have been a number of threads on this subject with some great advice...you may try doing a search and seeing what you find :) But I'm sure the new moms who were pregnant at last year's burn probably have some new stories to tell... -

I have a son and it's the best thing that ever happened to me. He's 18 now, but being a mom is the best job I've ever had. Just you wait....

Re: pregnant on the playa?
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 6:01 PMi've never been pregnant on the playa, in fact, my pregnancy is a distant memory 30 years later, but i would think 4-5 months would be the best time to do it.... you'll be past the morning sickness (hopefully) and looking clearly pregnant, but not yet big and uncomfortable. i have friends who went to burning man when she was just about that pregnant, and they were fine.
good luck to you! -

Re: pregnant on the playa?
Thu, May 8, 2008 - 9:29 PMI agree with Leslie. That trimester is way cool. You feel energetic and healthy. Not sick and exhausted like the first, or uncomfortable and exhausted like the last. I used to rollerskate in my second trimester. :-) -

Re: pregnant on the playa?
Mon, May 12, 2008 - 3:52 PMHey,
Yeah, as far as I've seen, 2nd trimester is super rad- most women I've seen in the clinic are happy, mellow, comfortable and excited.
Things to know:
1) obviously, um, any recreational alternative realities are out. Alcohol in small amounts- only if your Dr says okay. You want a kid, not a mutant. First trimester is the most important time for this.
2) The need to be able to cool off and rest will be very important. However that works out for you is great. Remember your blood volume is doubling, and you are creating 8 extra pounds of human from scratch. Being comfortable is very important.
3) People will want to touch your belly. Someone I know made signs/tags and wore them around her neck- first one was "YES, I'm pregnant", second was "I'm XX weeks along" and third was "NO we don't know what the sex is" and fourth was "Ask before touching"... because everyone wants to touch a pregnant woman's belly, for whatever reason...
Have fun!
Star :) Congratulations... -

Re: pregnant on the playa?
Tue, May 13, 2008 - 12:10 AMOne more thing.... I remember being at a crowded flea market with my mom and her neighbor, at 4.5 months along. After walking and feeling hot and somewhat cloistered, I started having this wierd Warner Bros cartoon tunnel vision effect, and I passed out cold. I woke up to two guys carrying me like a dead carcass to an emergency exit, with my mother running behind yelling at them, "Put her down! She's just pregnant! Stop! Put her down!"
Be aware of how you are feeling. Take breaks. Rest. Drink. If you feel hot and need shade, go get it, and don't push it. That's all. It may strike you out of the blue, so be prepared and have a way to get out of the heat. For example, if you are going out into the playa where there is no shade, do not do it on foot. Have your man peddle you in case he needs to get you to shade quickly and you can't walk.
Not to scare you. It's not serious. But pregnancy is a funny animal and you have to plan for that.
