It's sure interesting (My boyf said, "So, burping, scratching, farting, and now you pee standing up?").
As the odds of a water source for rinsing are slim, I'm wondering if it will smell like pee? I'm also thinking I'm going to make a prettier pouch for it (as opposed to the plastic bag it came in), and I'm contemplating some sort of...absorbent lining?
Dunno. Any tips?

Re: So I got my Freshette..
Sat, June 20, 2009 - 9:48 AMI wonder if a little spritz sanitizer would prevent it from smelling? Spritz and a TP wipeoff?

Re: So I got my Freshette..
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 3:17 PMI shake mine off and wipe with TP. It works for the guys ;) -

Re: So I got my Freshette..
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 3:30 PMNot to get technical... but when guys pee it shoots out a little hole and theIR 'funnel' is inside. Our funnel is outside, so one might deduce with more surface area exposed to the air, the more potential for eeeewwww? of course, this is assuming a little eeeeewwww bothers you. Some people are fine with a little eeeeewwwww. But if you're not fine with it, then a little extra TLC wouldn't be frowned upon.
I guess I'm in the camp that says, shake and wipe and stick it in a baggie. And if the eeeeewwww gets to be too much eeeewwwww for yoooouuuu... then give it a spritz or baby wipe or perhaps a spit shine from your camelbak.
Okay... reminder to self... ORDER A DAMN PEE FUNNEL! -

Re: So I got my Freshette..
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 5:01 PMseems like you could just pour a little water through it to rinse it off. wouldn't take much, would it?

Perhaps TMI, but you asked
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 3:37 PMI think the "absorbent lining" would probably be a worse bet for smell than the plastic, which you can just wipe off. The pee doesn't really stick to my funnel... a little in the tube, and where the gasket is. (If you've got an extendable tube, be careful to slide the tube all the way out so the gasket seals it... otherwise, messiness.) Otherwise, it wipes right off. I never noticed pee smell. Particularly on the playa, where my nose was clogged with dust, I think wiping with TP is enough for a short-term fix. I spritzed it with water occasionally during the week, too, and used hand-sanitizer on the parts I would touch before using it every once in a while--just in case it had picked up any ickies in my bag or the portas.

p.s. somewhat unrelated, but food for thought.
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 3:40 PMSomeone vomited on my pant leg last year, and I couldn't get our camp shower up and running. A many-year veteran Burner woman who lives in Gerlach looked at me fussing about getting everything clean and changed and said, completely seriously,"Eh. Just throw some playa dust on it, rub it in and call it good. That stuff'll kill anything." -

Totally unrelated, but a thought I feel like sharing.
Mon, June 22, 2009 - 4:25 PMA few burns back I came out of the porto's one night and it occurred to me I hadn't washed my hands in awhile and all I could think about was how good it would feel to have a way to wash my hands. For whatever the reason I didn't have anything on me and I just stood there outside the blue room asking 'please just let me wash my hands'. I looked to my left, and there was an art project... I think it was called Firefall. A giant running urn of water on fire that you could run your hands through and touch the fire. It was beautiful, and it answered my prayer.
Plan all you can, but in the end, the playa will provide.
p.s. Thank you to whomever brought that wonderous gift to the playa! -

Tue, June 23, 2009 - 6:09 AM"wipe with TP"
Duh. Once again, my brain overreaches. That'll work in the johns.
I could use spit, when there's not water, ha ha ha. -

Re: Totally unrelated, but a thought I feel like sharing.
Wed, June 24, 2009 - 9:32 AMYes, wipe with TP while in the blue box and keep it in the plastic baggie it came in. I also spritz it with the vinegar water spray bottle occasionally in the tent and drain into my pee pot. If it works to neutralize cat pee, it should be good enough for me! Thoroughly clean and sanitize when I get home. -

Wed, June 24, 2009 - 1:41 PMExcellent! Do you have a vinegar spritz bottle for this infamous playa food I read about?
Do you sterilize by boiling, or...? -

Re: Totally unrelated, but a thought I feel like sharing.
Thu, June 25, 2009 - 9:39 AMWe use a spray bottle with one part vinegar and three parts water a LOT. We wash our hands and feet with it to neutralize the very alkaline dust, then wash with a wet wipe, then slather on lotion before wearing socks and manicure gloves to bed. (I have never had the dreaded playa foot, but my hands get THRASHED setting up camp unless I follow this routine) I have also used it to spray the gears on my bike to get a little of the dust off, on tent zippers to get the moving again, clean off my dusty shoes and all kinds of other things.
I clean the freshette thoroughly with bleach when I get home, then soap and water and store in the car for road trips :)

Thu, June 25, 2009 - 11:10 AMI put mine in the diswasher. Top rack to avoid meltage. Not gross--the dishwasher is pretty good at sterilization.

Re: So I got my Freshette..
Sat, June 27, 2009 - 6:54 AMYou might not be near a water source, but you'll probably have a source of water with you. When you're on a road trip, you might not always carry a spritzer of vinegar, but you can always rinse with your water bottle.
