Hi Ladies,

New to Tribe, new to the list, so hello.

I posted this (more or less) in response to something in the Cacophany Tribe, and thought I might post it here as well...see what y'all think. Here it goes:

I have visions of arming the first oh I don't don't know, let's say 1000 women at 2008 Crititcal Tits with super-soakers (or flamethrowers, perhaps? No, too expensive, someone might lose an epidermis or something, let's be nice). Let the creepy-guy camera carnage begin!

Flamethrowers aside, though, I think it might be a fun, playful way to change for the better an event that means a lot to a lot of beautiful ladies (and their male cheerleaders), and which seems to be digressing into a how-many-tits-can-I-fit-onto-my-camera's-memory-card spectator orgy.

Thought about coming in a burka this year, but super-soakers would be much more fun, and let's face it, burkas are HOT (and not in the Paris Hilton way).

Anyone up for Take Back the Titties? Thoughts?

We survived getting pregnant after 3 months together, having a kiddo right after college, living together, buying a home, planning a wedding, starting a business, and going to Vegas and Hedonism II in Jamaica. I doubt there is anything at BM that could damage us (unless he gets set on fire again, but that only damages him).
I am terrified of not being able to contact my Sweatpea. She is my little bit of crazy that I absolutely need. Even in Jamaica I could call her each night. How do I manage to enjoy myself without being able to check in with her? I assume there are tons of Mothers at this event that have dealt with the same anxiety, so please help ease my mind with your method to survive this part of the experience. Also, if you have any tips on how to handle preparing the kid and the care takers, as well as any legal/emergency preparations that you suggest we take for the “in case of the worse”.

This was posted by Ohtony on the Burning Singles Tribe. I think it is brillient and applies not only to single people/sex/ love, but the Burnign Man experience in general:

"As a single, hetero man, I know from experience that Burning Man can be a wonderful and crushing experience. Usually both, often at the same time. I can hardly think of a single guy who has shown up at the playa alone and not wanted to hook up with someone. The fact is, this desire can ruin your BM experience (actually, it just makes you think that your experience is ruined). I have found that there are lessons that I have had to learn multiple times. After last year, as soon as I got back, I made notes to myself for this year, while the experience was still fresh in my mind. Now, as the burn approaches, I am taking what I have learned this year and adding to last year’s notes. I thought to myself, “I wish someone had told me this stuff before I went to Burning Man.” So, I decided to post it here. Many points have been offered by other people at one time or another. This is just my collection.

Be present.
This is, in my opinion, the most important thing. As in the default world, all we really have at Burning Man is the now. You can’t even say that you will have 7 days of nows, because anything could happen. So, just experience every single moment fully. If you find yourself thinking about how sweet it would be to hook up with that hottie you just met or how it would suck if she didn’t show up when you guys were supposed to meet, stop. Look around. Burning Man is happening all around you right now. Experience it. Now. This is why you came. Don’t miss it. If you put being at Burning Man above getting laid at Burning Man, you will have a far richer experience. And, you will increase your chances of getting laid at Burning Man.

When in doubt, say “Yes”
When offered anything, material, interactional or spiritual at Burning Man, unless you think that that this would be a “bad thing” for you, say “yes”. Yes opens up new possibilities. Yes is fun. And, Yes is usually sexy. Conversely, if you don’t think it’s a good thing for you, then definitely say no. Multiple times, and loudly if need be.

Have no expectations.
Expect nothing, not even a good time or a shitty time at Burning Man. Expect nothing from others. Especially, do not expect to have sex at Burning Man. Even if you go with a lover or possible lover, do not expect to have sex with them, or anyone else for that matter.

Be prepared
The other side of the expectation rule. Understand the difference. Do not expect to hook up with someone, but be prepared if you do. Bring what you need. Get tested, if you haven’t already.

Give
Give your time, your attention, your trinkets, your love, your admiration, your beer, your energy, your opinion, your hand, your heart, your enthusiasm. Give everything you can think of.

Make contact
Talk to as many interesting people as possible. Then, talk to some people that you would normally talk to. Always have a notepad and something to write with. Take pictures of people and take notes to go with them. Get email/phone numbers.

Use alternatives to sex
You don’t have to have intercourse to be intimate with someone. Massages are, of course, a good option. One of my favorites is the foot bath. Bring a small tub and some nice soap and lotion for after. Also, there is cuddling, eye-gazing, you get the point. Often, it is the non-sexual play that leads to other things. If not, well, it’s all good anyway.

Take responsibility for your joy
If you find yourself in a situation that you don’t want to be in, don’t not blame others. Blame, anger will probably not make anything any better. So, take responsibility for your attitude, your survival, your joy. Remember that you always have three choices: Accept the situation, change the situation or leave the situation. Pick one of the three, then be at peace.

For example, here’s a personal tip. I set a waiting time for meet-ups. For me, it’s 15 minutes. If someone says that they will meet me at a certain time, and they are not there, or we miss each other for whatever other reason, after 15 minutes, I’m free to do whatever I want (including waiting longer). In any case, it takes away any anger or disappointment. It puts me in control. And, while I’m waiting, I am fully experiencing the moment.

Communicate clearly
In your dealing with people, make sure that you are clear in your intentions. Make no assumptions. Ask the questions you need answers to. Be tactful, but direct. Clear communication is sexy.

Use drugs wisely
If you use drugs, then plan your drug usage ahead of time. Consider doing no drugs at all. There’s nothing worse that happening upon a possible playa buddy, then being too fucked up to have any fun.

Keep a journal
A journal will prove invaluable to you, even if you never go to Burning Man again. It is so easy to forget all of the thoughts you had on the playa. Don’t wait until you get back to camp to write. Jot a quick note down in the moment.

Get rest
You cannot go to The Deep End every afternoon, then go out dancing every night. You must plan for down time. You should not dance until sunrise unless you can sleep late the next day. Get plenty of sleep before you drive home.

Don’t fuck people in your camp.
If you can avoid it, “Don’t shit where you eat.” Understandably, sometimes, you just gotta do what you gotta do. But, there are thousands of other people in BRC. Inter-camp hook-ups usually end up badly.

Read, then keep “The Four Agreements”
If you haven’t read “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz, I highly suggest it. It’s a quick, but invaluable read. If you aren’t driving, you can probably finish it on the way to Burning Man. If you are driving, get the audiobook. In any case, it puts you in a great headspace when you hit BRC.

Don’t forget the art
Burning Man is one of the most amazing art exhibits in the world. Experience as much of it as you can. Interact with it. Take pictures of it. Talk about it with other people who are experiencing it with you. This is one lesson that I forget every year.

Be grateful
Do you realize how lucky/blessed you are to be at Burning Man? Then give thanks, to the the people who sell you ice, to the Rangers, to your campmates, to the stranger who is now a friend, to (your dogma here) for creating the playa, the sky above it and the mountains that surround it. Give thanks, verbally and in your heart. You can’t do it enough.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

"Burner, Tales from the Playa" comes to a web-browser near you!

A video of "Burner: Tales from the Playa" is now available on the internet. This final performance took place on February 2, 2008 at Abundant Sugar in Los Angeles.

"Burner: Tales from the Playa" is a one-man show written and performed by Tony Edwards, who goes by the "playa name" of OhTony. It is the true story of a six-time "Burner" and chronicles the joy, heartbreak, amazement and life lessons learned at Burning Man, the annual art and music festival which takes place on a Black Rock Lake, a remote, dry lake bed in Northern Nevada, loving known to Burners as "the playa".

OhTony intersperses his own, deeply personal accounts of survival, lust and enlightenment with insights into the beautiful insanity that is Burning Man. Although he takes a wickedly funny aim at the citizens and the culture of Black Rock City, he saves the sharpest barbs for himself. More than anything, "Burner: Tales from the Playa" is a loving tribute to Burning Man. and the citizens of Black Rock City.

People who have never been to Burning Man will be introduced to not just the sights and sounds, but also the spirit of Burning Man. And for the experienced, "Burner" is just like going home.
"Burner" is a multi-media production, featuring images, video and sound captured at Burning Man. The production is directed by Jerry Diner.

Dark Skies was gifted an extra ticket and we want to help a deserving burner and we're doing a fund raiser as well, so to tie it all in we're raffling this ticket off for $5 per entry. The drawing will be held on August 11th when we will announce the winner who will be selected by Peaches the Jack Russell Terrier rummaging in the ticket bowl.
Purely non-scientific but a lot of fun nonetheless!

TO ENTER: send $5 PER ENTRY via PayPal to darkskies@vegasartists.com
You may purchase as many entries as you wish, they are $5 each.
Each $5 entry buys you ONE CHANCE at winning this free ticket!
Good luck and have a great burn in 2008!

Well this year we are making Mutopia. Yet another huge and over the top fire and metal art piece with electronics incorporated and some steam in there too. Oh and we are doing some Aluminium casting as well. Pick what you are interested in.

This is a short film of FLG and Mutopia in it's prototype phase that was shown at Maker Faire. http://flaminglotus.wordpress.com/2008/05/10/mutopia-in-motion/

We have done a lot of work since then and there is still a lot to do.

The FLG is a mainly female art group. You dont need to have any prior metal working skills as we can show you how to use the equipment. We want you if you are enthusiatic, want to learn new and cool skills, it would be great if you have skills (electronics / metal / tea making / casting) but you shouldn't feel worried about not knowing how to use the tools and equipment.

We welcome women and men from all working backgrounds, abilities.

Production is ramping up and we are only just over a month away from loading it all on a trailer to the burn. You know you want to be part of the busiest all night HOT art pieces on the playa. Point out the bits you welded and grinded on yourself then show your friends where the buttons are for the fire.

http://flaminglotus.wordpress.com/about-the-flaming-lotus-girls/

We have a weekly meeting for the project on Wed around 7pm at The Boxshop, Hunterspoint, San Fran. We are not just working on a Wednesday though. We will be there every evening and every weekend between now and the point it put on the truck.

If you contact us before coming out to the workshop we may be able to arrange a ride share.

Love and firey kisses from Flaming Lotus Girls - Come join us. xxx
I'm curious about what stuff you want to know/ wish you knew prior to heading out there with your sweetie(s). I know a lot of people change or suspend the usual rules... any personal stories about how that worked out? I know a lot of fights can be avoided by stopping to drink water and electrolytes and taking a nap... what other tips do you have? What has made your experience with your S.O. extraordinary out there? What's made it a bummer? How would you tell people to best go about making sure their relationship survives the intensity that is Burning Man?

A little rant here. :) We had our regional this weekend (AZ) and it brought to mind a situation that keeps coming up for burner and burner-like events. People ragging on me for "packing too much" or "taking too long to pack". Actually, just *guys* slagging me for "over packing".

Mind you, these are the same guys who then proceed to use the shade that *I* planned, the drinks that *I* packed, the towel *I* remembered, benefit from the plans and organization that *I* did. Totally oblivious to the obnoxious irony that while they're snarking on my packing they're not only using those very items, but relying on me to bring them. (Or not needing to because they're camped with a large theme camp that has provided these items for them, just like their Mommy.) *rolls eyes*

The same guys who forgot to pack a toothbrush, or socks, or soap, or a coat, or a light, or food and beverages for the drive, or that extra blanket that was really needed, or effing WATER. But then smugly point out how much I packed. Or how long it took me to pack. Usually while borrowing one of the aforementioned missing items. Again, without any sense of irony. Makes me want to scream.

Seriously.
I. do. not. over. pack.
Really.

I'm the one measuring out 4 days worth of gatorade and oatmeal into tiny containers to save space, rather than taking the whole huge box. I'm the one planning meals so we have some variety and options, but not bringing a week's worth for a 3 day trip. I'm the one carefully planning my outfits so as not to pack a whole bag of clothing that remains unworn. I'm the one condensing things into travel size containers and stacking cups in bowls and bowls into pots. And I'm the one who took the time and forethought to pack similar items together so the lanterns are with the batteries, and the fuel is with the stove, and the mallets are with the stakes. So your (and my) experience is smoother when we arrive.

That's not packing too much. That's just called packing.
It's this thing we do when we have to be, you know, prepared. and um, self reliant.

And news flash people:
Burning Man is not, nor has it ever been, about backpack camping and minimalism. Radical expression, huge art, community contributions and costuming are not signs of a minimalist event. There are no prizes for bringing the least amount of stuff. It's about building and creating something in a difficult environment. This is a concept that by its very nature is pretty much antithetical to 1-bag- and-a-tarp camping. Of course, this isn't even addressing the fact that burner events are totally unpredictable, requiring you to pack for everything from 100 degrees to freezing, from manual labor to fabulous parties. So even if I had over packed -- which I didn't -- that's kind of the flipping point you asshat. ;)

Is it just me, or does anyone else get this?

This weekend I'm got to the point that when anyone remarks on my "over packing" I no longer even start to justify it or point out the obvious logic flaw. I just answer "fuck off". I'll smile if I'm feeling generous. ;)

Re: Pranl #52~ The ballad of Interplanet JanetToday, 2:07 PM
Ok so that everybody knows.
Apparently... if a woman does not like you, you have a smal dick, are a young boy who is a peeping tom, is a mysoginist and compensating for something.

Got it?

Too bad your blatant mysogyny shines through everything useful you might have to say.
~
I'm so sorry for whatever happened to you in your life that made you such an attention-whore. But I have no patience for a man who doesn't know anything about women yet hates them so much.
~
MAN! Hahahhaha, that's laughable!! he doesn't deserve to be called a MAN, he's a little boy playing games for attention. his stunt is no better than a bad example of a porky's flick, personally I'd rather watch the boys on porky's wank off thru peep holes. least its for their own entertainment and not blantant LIES for attention...
~
Fucko is a joke , thankfully MOST REAL MEN, know how to tease, be playful, and still have RESPECT for women, not so for this ass. but there ya go, in black in white..
I'd say this "wanker" has shown his true colors....
~
Fucko's self-cogratulatory egomania is more closely related to taggers who write their own name on walls in order to feel powerful. He makes inflammatory statements, then derides those who take offense. I have not engaged in any further interaction because of this, as obviously he is just trying to impress everyone with his brass, clanging, virtual balls while attempting to disguise it as some sort of snobbish art-nazi horseshit.
~
Every time I see one of his posts, I am entertained anew at how clearly they put me in mind of a hyper-hormonal teenage boy who has just discovered the Circle Jerks, and is now running up in peoples' faces in his mohawk sneering, "Am I challenging your perception of reality? I am the fly in your ointment! I'm TOTALLY messing with your vision of society, aren't I? AREN'T I? AAAAAREN'T IIIIIIIII???????"
Nope. Not really. But you've been one rather tiresome joke.
~
I'm guessing Fko has a teeeeeeeny tiny little dick -- we're talking Vienna Sausage here. Micro-mouse-dick.
~
I Hope we ALL get our say, because I do feel it is important that he hear (not that he's capable, mind you) what REAL WOMEN truly think and feel about this... however, ya know, there is one thing I hope for, that we don't give this Fuck anymore attention, I hope we can find a balance, cuz, most likely he is eating up all this additional attention, and frankly it further disgusts me knowing "IT" is still amongst us. most likely enjoying this....
~
I hope you have yourself a handjob in congratulations for your creative artistic joke, Fk'o.
Oh and by the way, your misogyny is showing.
~
I just think it's sad when someone has so little going on in their real life that they have to amuse themselves by creating a fantasy persona. And then egging the other self on in a strange kind of split personality conversation. It's like one or the other of the selves has forgotten how to interact with human beings.
~

And it's such a blatent attempt at overcompensation ... for what, we can only guess and surmise.
~

Attention whore or sticking my neck out for art?
You be the judge:)

now, frankly, IF I wanted what I was writing to be spread across different forums I would have PERSONALLY crossposted them,

I didnt say anything the first time this fuck did this, but i am now at a point where I dont give a rats ass what he thinks,

what do YOU as women in THIS forum think about this person taking our words over to the burningman tribe for HIS further gratification...

I tend to have far more respect for the thoughts and considerations of the women in THIS tribe, THAT is why I continue to post here and remain involved, the crap that F'ko posted is oneo f the many reason I left the Burningman tribe ages ago.....

have we now turned into a harbor for shit such as that??

curious.... is there any positive benefit to being duped by some attention seeking, "lying" prankster only to have what we write used in another tribe.... ?????

maybe its the heat, maybe its the fact that we havent seen blue skies in weeks, but THIS has reached my last nerve,,,

Ahhhh!! breathing now.

I am a young single Canadian woman flying down from Toronto for my second Burn; last year I had a great time camping independently with a few friends, but this year I am looking into joining a theme camp with like-minded souls, to facilitate my voyage to BRC. I was thinking about joining Couchsurfing Camp, but they don't provide anything in the way of meals or water. I'm really in to the arts, writing, spirituality, self-development, dancing, electronic music (except trance), travelling, communication. I'm not the handiest person in the world but give me a task and I'm happy to help in any way, have a lot of experience at community gatherings, festivals and other events that involve pARTicipation. I'm not really into drinking, so a camp that's all about partying might not be the best fit for me.

I went onto the BM website looking at theme camps, but there are so many to choose from and some of the camp dues are really expensive. I'd like to pay no more than $200 in camp dues. Meals, water and showers would be nice to have, but they're not totally necessary...I'm open to suggestions. Anyone?

Hello Hello!
Well i thought I would extend my offer to Burning Woman tribe. My friend and I are driving to Burning Man this year. I myself am starting in Bangor, ME then driving down to Boston where we shall meet up and then on the way to BRC. Now I had 2 passengers I was taking but due to some crazy circumstances they cannot make it. I drive a HUGE F150 extended cab with a cap on the back of it. Lots of room for playa toys and equipment. I can fit up to 3 comfortably.. 4 if you don't mind gettin snuggly. The truck is a stick so the mileage is not bad I would say about 600$ to get there split between us all would be nice. No ride back if you have other plans but if you want to ride back I am going to be driving. Now my friend Tim also has room in his vehicle up to 3 people max I would say. He is also pulling a trailer. Though he runs off diesal so should be a bt cheaper with him. We are going the burner way we have plans of driving 15 hours a day and then camping out. Tim has a HUGE yurt that we will be using plus walkie talkies with a 20 mile radius to keep in touch.. yes we are an anal retentive pair. (If you want to look at Tim's profle its under my friends and he is Zig) We have routes picked and are chill people. No drama please (I know most of you know this and are not this way but I have to add the disclaimer) So if you are in the New England area or even on the way to the Burn I can get ya and your cost would only involve when you get in the vehicle. I have bungee cords and a hitch if you have more things and we will work on costs then. (I think I have a pic of the truck in my photos that are public). If you can drive a big truck thats stick well better for me! Woudl love to have help but its not necessary at all. Well let me know if any of you ladies are interested you can PM me. We will chat and so forth and then make some plans! I will make a quick stop in RENO to pick up my bike and you will meet some chill RENO burners. We leave Aug 20th out of Boston and arrive that sunday. I hope this is enough info for you guys and if you have more questions please ask away don't be shy! Thanks so much take care and see you at the Burn!
Synopsis

Carnaval, tribe or mystic retreat ? This big uproar for some will stay as a spiritual experience for the others. The film depicts the journey of artist David Best through the building of the “temple.” David Best dedicates this interactive artwork to the departed love ones and to the miracle of life. He’s offering his own creativity to the community. A clever anachronism, a miraculous idea and an exemplary symbol. The citizens of Black Rock City take ownership of it and write messages to their families, their friends, their departed love ones. The temple is full of tributes and becomes a sanctuary. The frenzy turns into meditation in that lost desert where the world is reborn each year from its own ashes.
Just got my new tent...http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___28504
Last time, I used a Eureka that had similar mesh panels that allowed a lot of dust to come into the tent despite a full coverage rainfly like this.
I trashed some pillowcases to cover the mesh panels, holding with duct tape, on playa. Didn't work too good.
I was going to take a thin old cotton sheet, and cut pieces to go over these big triangular mesh windows, and baste them on the tent from the outside. Overlap the mesh by about an inch on all sides.
Anyone try anything like this? Any other remedies?
muchas gracias, chicas,

I am reposting this from one of our core B.E.D buddies Ludo. B.E.D finds its self desperatly needing women this year who are willing to jump in and make a diffrence and in particular, be willing to get up in front of small classes and help with our workshops. You see I am not going this year and I have been doing the workshops for 3 years, Little wing will not be there either. So we need some ladies to help out!

Ladies! Join me in BED!

No! Not like THAT! I mean I want you to perform with me, in BED, in front of a crowd of people!

NO Wait! I mean... umm... crap!... OK, let me start at the beginning.

The Bureau of Erotic Discourse (B.E.D.) is a grass-roots organization that has been presenting seminars, or "playshops" on the playa, promoting safe and healthy sexual relationships, since 2005. You may have seen our pink porta-potty posters over the past few years.
In our seminars, we use lecture, demonstration, and role playing to inform our audience about:
- understanding and expressing our sexual desires
- understanding and expressing our sexual boundaries
- how to listen to the desires and boundaries of your new friend or partner
- how to get them to hear and respect your desires and boundaries
- how to keep things from getting out of hand
- and what to do when they do get out of hand

This year, while our overall membership has grown, the number of women who are comfortable on stage has dwindled dramatically. Lots of actors, no actresses. And I think you will agree that when you are talking about sexual desires and boundaries, having a female voice on that stage means a lot in terms of credibility and balance.

If you are comfortable speaking in front of a group, performing in short, scripted, role-plays, and/or doing a little improv, then please consider helping us get this important message out. No acting experience is required, and your time commitment will be minimal - a few hours rehearsal before the event, either here on on the playa, and one or two 1-hour seminars at Burning Man. I have been doing these seminars for three years now. I have to say that they have been among the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences of my life.

According to the AfterBurn report, there were 10 reported sexual assaults on the playa last year. That may not seem like a statistically huge number for a city of nearly 50,000. But to us, it is 10 too many. And when you consider that the majority of sexual assault cases go unreported, the problem is real, and somebody should do something about. I am somebody. Are you?

Please help us bring more feminine energy to this important work. If you would like to join us in B.E.D., please PM me, or e-mail me at robwalsh1 (at) comcast (dot) net.

Thank you.

Last night, my friends and I were, ahem... "enhanced" and we started talking about ways to get more people, who are not already artist to contribute more art to Burningman.

Borg2 was great and all but could something be doen to more effective?

What we came up was:

Handjobs for Artist Program.

(originally blow jobs but the boundary lines run a bit far for that)

They way it works is like this.

We will provide sexual handjobs, with complementary lube, with a happy ending for any legal aged 18+ concentual men and women who can, make , create, or cause a resonably identifiable* work of art for Burning Man 2008.

* identifiable in this case is art that meets a TWO FOLD CRITERIA:
CREATIVE EXPRESSION

You must also submit your project idea ahead of time so we can co-ordinate a on -playa site inspection and arrange a prise claim.

We, of course reserve the right to refuse any work of art, any artist for any reason we deem fit.

Having said that, we hope to have sore hands by weeks end and that may everyone on tribe get some love for an exchange of your creative expressive selves. There is nothing more vauable to us than to artistic pressence. Don't be shy, give it a shot. You might find the handjob was the least of the reward for giving Black Rock City your art.

Best to all!

Some people are outraged because they see his act as an anarchist 'prank' and feel the sentence is too harsh

I believe his actions endangered people, ruined the hard work of everyone who had eco displays under the pavilion, tried to destroy the ceremony for which 40,000 people had gathered... it was an act of extreme egotism at the expense of the community and to me that should have consequences.

He may be seriously deranged and in need of help, but our budget-crunched society is dismantling it's 'mental health' systems and this department is now by default handled by police. Not a good time to go off. In the area where I live 3 people in medical crisis have been shot to death by cops in the last 8 months. Addis can be glad he's alive for starters.
similarly, when sharing the bed, i'm a lighter sleeper. when it's a friend and we stay on our own sides, it's not too bad. first night i'll sleep lightly and be conscious of turning over, to make sure i don't kick them out of bed ;o) and i sleep better subsequent nights.

however, when it's a romantic interest, different story. I find it hard to fall asleep while cuddling, and tend to wake when either of us change position. unless i'm really exhausted, or use an herbal remedy to help me sleep (which isn't always enough), i just don't fall into a deep restorative sleep with rem cycles and all. this is both at home and away, although my chances are better in my own bed it's not a sure thing at all.

i've made it through camping several nights with a partner and very little sleep (with naps during the day) at regional event.

even with weekends staying in my own bed, it puts a damper on things because i have less energy towards the end of the weekend. and this year, i'll be at burning man with my guy, and i worry what a week of this will do to me especially when no one can sleep in very late with the heat.

it's not an issue of trust/feeling safe, as i'm happier half asleep in his arms than sleeping soundly on my own. and i've had this issue with everyone i've ever dated.

is there anything i can do to work on this aside from time passing and getting used to sharing a bed (we are together weekends mostly, 2-3 nights a week. but even that is more than i have spent with anyone in the past, for various reasons, never lived with a significant other before.) i don't know whether a sleep aid (beside the herbal mentioned) would help or make me feel worse the next day if i didn't get enough rest. i know i should discuss it with my doctor, but i'd love to hear any non-medical (or possible medical solutions to talk to the doc about) advice.

thanks! ;o)

A friend of mine who has never been to Burning Man asked me this question yesterday... What would your response be if someone asked you "How bright do you burn?"

Now, I have never heard this phrase among my burner friends or even on the playa over the last few years. I wondered if I had missed out on some hip new burner lingo. Then I started to ponder what the heck it means. My first instinct was that it sounded a bit pretentious and snooty. Then we had a discussion that it could have various meanings including spiritual, artistic, recreational, etc.

I'm curious to hear what other's interpretations are...

this is a re-post from another burner (jarJar)

Its that time of year again when many of us are making plans for the playa. One of the major plans is how we are getting there which often includes carpooling with other burners we may or may not know very well. I was thinking about my personal experiences with this and realized there some things I have learned over the years that are important to share with the community.

Things to remember when offering or accepting rides to and from burning man.

1) DRUGS. Truth is our community is varied, some of the people have good jobs that have security clearances or other stringent requirements that absolutely prevent them not only from partaking in any form of illegal substance, but they also would risk losing their careers if they were found to have contraband in their vehicles or on their vehicles passengers. On the other hand there are many in the community who do choose to have this as part of their life. Regardless of where you stand in life it is very important that you have this discussion with all passengers prior to accepting or offering a ride. Unfortunately however even this is not always honored, for example last year when we offered a ride to a fellow burner we were adamant that absolutely no drugs or illegal substances could be in the vehicle. Unfortunately this person chose to violate this and brought a large bag of pot along that we did not find out about until we were half way there. this person not only broke their word but also endangered the career of the vehicle owner. Fortunately they were not pulled over. However I have heard other stories that show how responsible others are, for example another burner in the community had the same rule for there passengers. When one of the passengers had some extra "gifts" left over after the burn that passenger found someone else to take the gift home in another vehicle rather than break the agreement. That is the right and honorable thing to do.

The moral: Know who your riding with, ask others does this person keep there word?

2) CASH. everyone has a different way of splitting expenses. But you need to be clear up front. If you are asking for a certain dollar contribution towards gas, get it before you leave. Things happen its better to not have this hanging in the air. Another approach is alternating who uses a card to put gas in the tank (only do this if you feel confident your passengers card will clear) I have known too many people who have had bad experiences of passengers never giving them the promised contributions, it can ruin friendships. So just get it before you leave and be firm.

3) DEPARTURES. It never fails every year I hear of someone having some issue with a passenger about departures sometimes its leaving town (they were not ready, they were not clear as to where they were at) or issues leaving the playa they would not or could not leave at the set time. Or a driver left a passenger on playa with just a note saying they left early they would have to find another ride, Or a ride had to leave due to a medical emergency only to have a passenger dangerously delay them, Or a passenger decide to leave with another person but leaves all there gear to there ride to take care of for them and take to there home, or...

you get the idea there are hundreds of things that can go wrong however some common courtesy and remembering the principles can go a long way toward handling these things appropriately.

a) set a EXACT time and location for leaving both home and the playa.

b) set how you will contact the other parties should some event require the driver to leave the playa sooner than planned (shit happens people!) Its important that you have a way to get a hold of your riders.

c)If for some reason you are a driver and must leave, you owe your riders the courtesy of letting them know face to face if at all possible.

d) IF you are a rider whose ride needs to leave for medical reasons, by all means you need to go or you need to quickly figure out how you and your gear are going home

e) If you chose to go home with others other than your planned ride you need to take your gear too. IF you can not take your gear keep in mind those hauling and dropping off your gear are doing you a HUGE favor. You need to guarantee them a secure place to drop it off and if you can’t guarantee that then you are tasking a risk with your things and that’s not the responsibility of the people who transported your gear sans you. (remember we are currently living in the highest meth use state, many burners on this list had gear stolen from yards and porches this year, have gear dropped off at your own risk)

f) if you do not show up and are packed at the pre set time.... prepare to be left. This is about radical self reliance its not others responsibility to wait on you, take care of you, pack for you or find you.

I hope these tips may help others avoid some of the pit falls of playa ride sharing this year. Every year there are stories maybe this year there will be fewer.

I spent mine at another bourgeouis baseball tournament, courtesy of my man's son's baseball commitment. Kid is adorable and I wouldn't miss it, but the other parents, ewwww. They make me want to strip and run the bases to shock their repressed sensabilities.

But then again, I was there with the man, who makes me want to strip and.... THAT is the good part. I love including him and his children in my heart family. Life is good. Shaving him in the shower last night was the highlight. That and the killer sex, friendship, laughter, etc.

Oh, and watching my boston terriers go apeshit with all the kids to play with at the tournament was good. Scout, the little female, was so tired when we got home she passed out on the couch and never moved or opened her eyes til this morning. Same with Murphy, the boy. It's all good.

I just sold my VW Bus, Freckles. I bought her a few years ago and wanted to restore her, but needs must, I sold her.

I put her on Craig's List two days ago and had no less than 50 calls. She sold twice the first two who saw her. I know I asked too little but don't start with me. I need the money now and I got more than I need. It is a fair trade.

She went home tonight to her new owner, a beautiful blonde lady named Val who was dancing in her high heeled sandals and hugging me before she left. Val lives right down the street from me and promises me a ride in her new "sweet, rocking little bus". I know Freckles is going to a good home because Ms. Val has wrenched on her own, and like me, she's mechanically inclined. Freckles is getting a total detail in her new garage as I speak.

And happily, I can pay rent and some bills this month.

Gawd I will miss my little eyelashed bus. Cheers to her. I know she will be loved, but still.....

Without re-hashing the flame wars about sex, I wanted to take this opportunity to to give people opposed to my project to offer alternatives that could lead to more art on the playa.

Being universal and innate, their influence can be detected in the form of myths, symbols, rituals and instincts of human beings. Archetypes are components of the collective unconscious and serve to organize, direct and inform human thought and behaviour. ...archetypes heavily influence the human life cycle, propelling a neurologically hard-wired sequence which he called the stages of life. Each stage is mediated through a new set of archetypal
