Tuesday night was a special night where a group of us went out and just cavorted and played like kids. "Oooh, what is happening over there?" was the theme for the night. We went from place to place and each place was delightful! My favorite memories that night were being in a dome where there was a man playing an electric violin and a man playing an electric cello. Oh man, they were so freakin' good! I could have stayed there all night long listening to them. I have never heard such great sounds as the sounds I heard that night. I would look around and everyone listening seemed to be in a state of bliss.

My second memory was of this pavilion, where when you entered it, a laser would follow you and make patterns on the ground as you moved. It also made sounds, so it would make this music as you moved too! That was so much fun and everyone would dance and then join hands and dance in a circle and then run in the circle and the lights and the music would speed up. It was crazy! And it was joyful! I loved it!

I would love to hear about some of your favorite moments out there at BRC this year. Or any year for that matter!

1. having a notebook that was really colorful and having pens close by all the time worked well.
2. i bought a little child's pottie chair since i have to pee a lot and often in the middle of the night. it was wayyyyyy better than a pee bottle. it even had a cute lil pink cushion so you didn't freeze your butt on the cold nights. just emptied it out each morning into a larger pee storage bottle.
3. labeling everything in zip loc bags worked great. when i was too tired to find stuff, i could go right to it.

any other ideas?

I'm not sure if this counts as a revelation, or just a moment where I had a thought, a wish, a realization that seemed a bit more clear amidst the dust. I'm lacking for eloquence at the moment, but it's on my mind and I'm feeling the need to share. Thank you Burning Women, by the way, for giving me a safe space to share :-)

We said our final goodbye to a dear friend at the Temple this year. We also said Happy Birthday to her on Saturday as the Man burned. If you noticed how the man stood for longer than ever... and if you noticed the 3:00 tier of the Temple standing strong through the fire... well, that was Janet. The two places where her ashes were spread were the two places that stood strong thru the blaze. I can't help but believe her presence had a little something to do with that. She was a stubborn woman, indeed. And dammit, she was gonna stand as long as we were there to love her.

Which brings me to my little revelation.

As the Temple burned, the most prominent thought that occupied my being was... She knew she was loved.

And I found solace in that. It brought me joy, it gave me hope, it helped me make peace.

She knew she was loved.

I found myself hoping and wishing that when my day comes, when all our days come, that we all leave this place with the knowledge that we are loved.

I came back to the default world with a sense of awe, trying to grasp just how much I am loved. I so often feel alone, isolated, and unloved. And I thought that was reality. Somehow, the winds have changed. And I now find myself feeling surrounded by people who love me, who want to help, who want the best for me. I'm going through a major change in my life right now, and I'm overwhelmed with how my friends and family are supporting and helping me... without my even having to ask. I didn't see it coming. They all have challenges of their own they are facing, yet they are finding space for me in their hearts and in their lives, without my even having to ask. I'm humbled, and I feel loved.

Maybe this is the way it was all along, and maybe I took them for granted. Maybe I didn't feel deserving so I didn't acknowledge their love. Maybe I harbored resentments, or jealousy, or maybe I just thought it was easier to be alone and angry. I'm really not sure.

All I know is, I had a revelation that the best way to leave this world is with the knowledge that you are loved. Maybe giving love is easier than accepting love. And maybe, just maybe, accepting love is just as important. Maybe even more so.

xoxo

Hey ladies, I'm coming out to the Decom party, and I was wondering if anybody knew of a campground or cheap place to stay on Oct. 17th in Santa Cruz. I'm also open to staying at someone's place for that night if someone has room for me. I have never been to Santa Cruz, so it would be cool to meet up with some people who know the area. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

I received the follwing e-mail last month from Monica Maduro:

"I also happen to have worked a bit on the galleon project, La Contessa, with which you might be familiar... It was a design by Simon Cheffins and Greg Jones and we're now working on a lawsuit against the guy who, without warning, burnt it to the ground.

I understand that you've been a sort of "wedding coordinator" for the desert. Here's the thing: we're now in a phase of the suit in which we need as many people who had direct relationships with the galleon to help us by signing on as official supporters. These people could be art experts who can help us counter the claim that the project was a "pile of junk," or it can be people who just had an incredible personal experience on the ship. I've heard so many rumors that people got engaged or married on La Contessa. Do you know any of these people? Would you or any of those people be willing to sign on as our "witnesses?" It may mean nothing more than a name on a very long list, but there's an outside chance you'd be deposed at some point.

It would also definitely be helpful if you posted a note looking for a response from anyone who got either engaged or married on the galleon. I'd love to get in touch and confirm people this week if possible. Also here are two ways to post personal stories, which are very helpful to our case:

To be a "member" on facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=151518360152

And to be "friend"

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Friends-of-La-Contessa/56913417858?v=wall&viewas=0

Would be terrific of you to ask your pals to do both and then add any stories they feel like sharing. Thanks so much!

Any connections you have would be so appreciated. We're filing in federal courts, which means that if we win this, it will set an important precedent for artists all over the country who deserve better than to have their projects destroyed. Let me know your thoughts, and thanks!"

So, if you want to help out....also, please cross post to other lists. Thanks!
After 4 years in the playa though, my tent is in serious need for some post-playa TLC. All windows and vents in my tent zip (the perfect playa tent) but I noticed that a lot of playa got in this year. I have a feeling that I need to re-seal the seams, and I am thinking might as well give it a good washing prior.

How do you all wash your tents? Some people I have talked to swear by the washing maching (really? does that work?). Others prefer the pressure washer method. Do you set up your tent and then wash? Or do you wash without setting it up, just laying out on the ground? How do you get playa out of a bathtub floor?

So many questions! Looking for your wisdom and advice.

Lately I've found that most of the men I've been attracted to have turned out to be between 8 and 15 years older than me. Part of me says that it shouldn't matter a bit, but another part of me is made very uncomfortable by it. Is there something wrong with me? Am I being preyed on? Why is it that I can't connect with people my own age? I think the main reason it bothers me is due to the fact that in the US we have this sort of upper and lower age limit on who is "acceptable" to date. Any younger, and we're considered cougars. Any older, and people assume we're getting scammed by some creepy old guy.

This is more geared towards other poly people but all advice welcomed. I'll be camping (2nd time; 1st time as non-single) with my V and kinda nervous. Everyone always hears about 'inevitable' fights but I'd like to avoid/minimize them. Especially since my SO and his OSO will be going through emotional issues this burn, I know we'll probably be sensitive too. So, curious as to what tips you could give me for enjoying myself and avoiding disaster?

My solution so far is to essentially assume I'm single. I dont expect to eat meals together, do things together - we've said thursday will be 'me/him' day, and friday he'll have a day with the SO, but other than that we're playing it by ear. Trying to make it more individualistic, also because I know I'll definetly want the freedom of wandering about. So..that's the backstory. What tips do you guys have for avoiding tension and arguments, or enhancing experiences while not 'tying down' the other person?

SAN FRANCISCO, California (September 5, 2009) - San Francisco's transgender recording artist/label, Art of Pop (AoP), has released a chant version of Charlie Chaplin's "Smile", in tribute to Michael Jackson. (Singer/songwriter and cleric) Alyras, expressed the chant on September 3, during the scheduled hour of his funeral, while on a spirit journey into the Great Mausoleum, (wherein he has been laid to rest.)

Life long fan of Michael Jackson, Alyras was working on a project at the time of his death. Profoundly impacted by the news, she chose to suppress her emotions and deal with her grief recovery after completing the project. Unexpectedly, the release of her grief began at the scheduled time of his funeral, first manifesting as this chant. Distributed particularly to assist other fans of the King of Pop through grief recovery, AoP is enabling all persons to freely download the chant directly from its web site: http://www.ArtofPop.com/smile.html - the background story is accessible thereby as well.

Ive posted this before, but I just proved to myself again what a great tea recipe this is for rockin your period so you dont get it at the Burn!

Heres a recipe to bring your menstration on. For example, Im going on a little Railroad Earth tour next week, my favorite band, doing 3 nights and I dont want to have to deal with it. Its supposed to come next thursday, when tour starts. Today is Friday, 6 days before. Yesterday I went to the health food store and picked up herbs to make tea. I havent done this in YEARS mind you, but I thought I would give it a shot. Drank it last night and got it this AM 6 days early.

In the bulk dried herb section, get a table spoon or 2 of each:

Black Cohosh root
Chamomile flowers
Pennyroyal (its like mint)
Mugwort (yuck this stuff is gross but really works)
Parsley leaves

Get a big pot on the stove and add around 12 cups of water. Bring to boil. Keep lid on at all times.
Add the Black Cohosh root first and let that simmer on low for 20 minutes. Roots need to be brewed.
After that, add a table spoon of the rest of the herbs, turn off heat, and keep lid on and let steep.

Strain or spoon into a mug (regular strainer works fine for me, a few little leaves wont hurt)
This stuff is NASTY tasting, so add a tablespoon of Honey to help it go down.
======================================================================

AS WITH ANY MEDICATIONS AND HERBS, DO NOT TAKE IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, OR HAVE HERBAL SENSITIVITIES. SOME MIGHT WANT TO TALK TO THEIR DOCTOR. DO NOT DO THIS EVERY MONTH. ONLY WHEN YOU REALLY NEED IT.
^^just some disclaimers. These are strong herbs that really get the job done.

The rest of the tea is good to drink after you start, because it helps your body shed and makes periods less painful.

So, today I called Enterprise to confirm my reservation that I made a few months ago, only to be told that they never let their vans/SUV's off-road--especially to Burning Man. This is after I **specifically** called the local branch to tell them I was taking it to Burning Man and what their rules were concerning that. At the time, I was told it was absolutely no problem (with a few stipulations) and we had it all worked out. Turns out someone fucked up.

They got a good chewing-out from me, but the end result is still that Ryan and I have no vehicle to take to the playa. I drive a Mini, which won't hold even a third of the stuff we are bringing even if we tented it. So I am asking my wonderful community--does anyone have ANY suggestions? I just found this all out this morning and cannot be online most of today, so just wanted to start getting the ball rolling before I dig into more research tonight after my volunteer shift. Does anyone have a vehicle they'd be willing to rent us? Know of a smaller local rental company that will allow a van or truck to go to the playa? Could a Mini haul a small trailer? ANY and ALL suggestions and advice are more than welcome!!!!

Thank you and I really, really hope I see you there!

I bring them to the playa (and other festivals), and most of it, I have managed to gift away to someone who really wanted that hat, or belly ring, or box of baby wipes, etc. It feels really good to know that the object found a good home.

Not sure how many Burner Woman subscribers knew Caleb. He worked for DPW for three years 2001-2003 and clean up crew for several years as well. Last year, he wrote for the Black Rock Beacon which is where I met him. On April 17th this year, Caleb committed suicide in Gerlach and I was with him trying to grab that shotgun from his hands. Here are a few events I've helped create for the playa this year.

How to remember Caleb Schaber this year at the burn. Playa time being what it is, pick the one you can fit in to your schedule or that helps you to say goodbye:

• Bring a “found item” like a piece of wood that he might have painted on to add to the on-playa Outsider Art sculpture that we are creating. If you have one of Caleb’s paintings, photocopy and bring that to put on the sculpture. Bring that email that haunts you still. Heck, Caleb once created a piece of art from a pizza box! There will be basic tools to assist and some paints to apply your note – bring burnables only please. It is your sculpture of your memories of Caleb and we will burn it after the memorial on Thursday evening. Check at the ARTERY for placement location.

• Make an origami crane with the assistance of the crew at Rue Morgue (9:00 plaza) early in the week to place either on the sculpture or in the coffin that Rue Morgue puts in the Temple each year. Write your goodbye to Caleb on the crane. This is a drop-in anytime activity.

• Meet on Monday evening at 6PM at the Black Rock Beacon on Evolution Rd @ 5:30, to help us swarm the city's porta potties. We have created a Mental Health survivors Guide to the Playa and printed 500 on sticky labels for the porta potties. In Caleb's memory, let's help those who are suffering to have a safe burn!

• Eat breakfast on Wednesday morning at 8AM and until the food runs out at Toon Town Disco. We’re hosting the Breakfast of Mental Health Champions. We are going to be sooooo politically incorrect as to knock mental health stigma out of our society’s lexicon on Caleb’s behalf. There will be good food to fortify us, heck, Rhino is even bringing GRITS! I’m crazy; you’re crazy too, come dance with me at the disco!

• Memorial at Rue Morgue, 9:00 plaza at 6PM on Thursday followed by the burning of the sculpture once the sun sets. Bring your own “shooter” glass, tequila might be involved. Heck, bring some tequila so there’s lots.

• Visit the Temple and leave your memories there. A poster has been created with some photos of Caleb. His name is on the Memorial Burner Plaque. One page in the book of memories in the center of the Temple is for Caleb – read about his life. Add your notes nearby.

• Attend Temple Burn this year, watch the coffin full of cranes enter the Temple and remember that crazy email Caleb sent you as the Temple goes up in flames.

• If none of these fit your schedule or your personal connection to Caleb, crack open a PBR and drink to his memory. Don’t be surprised if there’s one less PBR in your cooler – his spirit will be there all around us hopping from camp to camp looking for a brew and deep, spirited conversation. When he shows up at your camp, love him or curse him for leaving us all behind to carry on without his crazy, wild, genius.

We'd love help from the whole community to make this year especially awesome!

With dues so far we have reached our goal for infrastructure (dome, truck rental, storage, shower and kitchen) but we also want to be prepared for the hundreds of women who plan to visit the camp and participate in our events, workshops and play parties. We still need to raise a few hundred dollars to cover safe sex supplies, batteries for our fun toys and alcohol for our social parties, plus the supplies to make sure we're visible on the playa (flags and lighting at night).

We're asking for donations towards our cause to ensure being fully prepared to WELCOME QUEER WOMYN TO THE PLAYA AND ROCK THEIR WORLDS!!!!
If you can, please donate to our camp via paypal. There's a donate button on our main website - www.campbeaverton.org/site

This camp is so crucial to the Burning Man community because a safe, supportive, and healthy space for the women loving women is very important to us all. We are working very hard to ensure visibility/awareness/education/ and ENTERTAINMENT to all women on the playa!!!

Be sure to swing on by and say hello - We'll be at Biology and 7:30. We have a bunch of really cool events planned.

This was posted by Ohtony on the Burning Singles Tribe. I think it is brillient and applies not only to single people/sex/ love, but the Burnign Man experience in general:

"As a single, hetero man, I know from experience that Burning Man can be a wonderful and crushing experience. Usually both, often at the same time. I can hardly think of a single guy who has shown up at the playa alone and not wanted to hook up with someone. The fact is, this desire can ruin your BM experience (actually, it just makes you think that your experience is ruined). I have found that there are lessons that I have had to learn multiple times. After last year, as soon as I got back, I made notes to myself for this year, while the experience was still fresh in my mind. Now, as the burn approaches, I am taking what I have learned this year and adding to last year’s notes. I thought to myself, “I wish someone had told me this stuff before I went to Burning Man.” So, I decided to post it here. Many points have been offered by other people at one time or another. This is just my collection.

Be present.
This is, in my opinion, the most important thing. As in the default world, all we really have at Burning Man is the now. You can’t even say that you will have 7 days of nows, because anything could happen. So, just experience every single moment fully. If you find yourself thinking about how sweet it would be to hook up with that hottie you just met or how it would suck if she didn’t show up when you guys were supposed to meet, stop. Look around. Burning Man is happening all around you right now. Experience it. Now. This is why you came. Don’t miss it. If you put being at Burning Man above getting laid at Burning Man, you will have a far richer experience. And, you will increase your chances of getting laid at Burning Man.

When in doubt, say “Yes”
When offered anything, material, interactional or spiritual at Burning Man, unless you think that that this would be a “bad thing” for you, say “yes”. Yes opens up new possibilities. Yes is fun. And, Yes is usually sexy. Conversely, if you don’t think it’s a good thing for you, then definitely say no. Multiple times, and loudly if need be.

Have no expectations.
Expect nothing, not even a good time or a shitty time at Burning Man. Expect nothing from others. Especially, do not expect to have sex at Burning Man. Even if you go with a lover or possible lover, do not expect to have sex with them, or anyone else for that matter.

Be prepared
The other side of the expectation rule. Understand the difference. Do not expect to hook up with someone, but be prepared if you do. Bring what you need. Get tested, if you haven’t already.

Give
Give your time, your attention, your trinkets, your love, your admiration, your beer, your energy, your opinion, your hand, your heart, your enthusiasm. Give everything you can think of.

Make contact
Talk to as many interesting people as possible. Then, talk to some people that you would normally talk to. Always have a notepad and something to write with. Take pictures of people and take notes to go with them. Get email/phone numbers.

Use alternatives to sex
You don’t have to have intercourse to be intimate with someone. Massages are, of course, a good option. One of my favorites is the foot bath. Bring a small tub and some nice soap and lotion for after. Also, there is cuddling, eye-gazing, you get the point. Often, it is the non-sexual play that leads to other things. If not, well, it’s all good anyway.

Take responsibility for your joy
If you find yourself in a situation that you don’t want to be in, don’t not blame others. Blame, anger will probably not make anything any better. So, take responsibility for your attitude, your survival, your joy. Remember that you always have three choices: Accept the situation, change the situation or leave the situation. Pick one of the three, then be at peace.

For example, here’s a personal tip. I set a waiting time for meet-ups. For me, it’s 15 minutes. If someone says that they will meet me at a certain time, and they are not there, or we miss each other for whatever other reason, after 15 minutes, I’m free to do whatever I want (including waiting longer). In any case, it takes away any anger or disappointment. It puts me in control. And, while I’m waiting, I am fully experiencing the moment.

Communicate clearly
In your dealing with people, make sure that you are clear in your intentions. Make no assumptions. Ask the questions you need answers to. Be tactful, but direct. Clear communication is sexy.

Use drugs wisely
If you use drugs, then plan your drug usage ahead of time. Consider doing no drugs at all. There’s nothing worse that happening upon a possible playa buddy, then being too fucked up to have any fun.

Keep a journal
A journal will prove invaluable to you, even if you never go to Burning Man again. It is so easy to forget all of the thoughts you had on the playa. Don’t wait until you get back to camp to write. Jot a quick note down in the moment.

Get rest
You cannot go to The Deep End every afternoon, then go out dancing every night. You must plan for down time. You should not dance until sunrise unless you can sleep late the next day. Get plenty of sleep before you drive home.

Don’t fuck people in your camp.
If you can avoid it, “Don’t shit where you eat.” Understandably, sometimes, you just gotta do what you gotta do. But, there are thousands of other people in BRC. Inter-camp hook-ups usually end up badly.

Read, then keep “The Four Agreements”
If you haven’t read “The Four Agreements” by Don Miguel Ruiz, I highly suggest it. It’s a quick, but invaluable read. If you aren’t driving, you can probably finish it on the way to Burning Man. If you are driving, get the audiobook. In any case, it puts you in a great headspace when you hit BRC.

Don’t forget the art
Burning Man is one of the most amazing art exhibits in the world. Experience as much of it as you can. Interact with it. Take pictures of it. Talk about it with other people who are experiencing it with you. This is one lesson that I forget every year.

Be grateful
Do you realize how lucky/blessed you are to be at Burning Man? Then give thanks, to the the people who sell you ice, to the Rangers, to your campmates, to the stranger who is now a friend, to (your dogma here) for creating the playa, the sky above it and the mountains that surround it. Give thanks, verbally and in your heart. You can’t do it enough.

The plan has been for the two of us to go in my van. Then, about 2 months ago, at a burner event I met a guy and started seeing him. He's my lover too, and he wants me to be with him at BM. Both guys know all about each other (no secrets). Guy #1 is cool with whatever I want to do. Guy #2 is a little on the jealous side, but dealing with it all. I've told them both I want to go and have a good time and although I want to be with them both (not at the same time), this event (and my participation) is not about them - I don't want to be responsible for their "goodtime". I don't know whether to make a schedule, be freeform (and miss somebody) or???? On top of everything, I want to be open to making new friends!

she blogged about it yesterday, saying:

"Ok, I am facing a dilemma here, I can buy these tickets to my family reunion in scotland, and return home for the gathering of a lifetime, I haven't been back to Scotland since 1992, and since this is the 250th year since the Scots could parade the royal mile in tartans, and also celebrate Robbie Burns, and see my family, I am inclined to just toss caution to the wind and take every cent we have to make this journey....

on the other hand. it will take ever ecent we have, AND, what of the economy, our jobs are safe, so far, but with so many struggling how "right" is it to go off and celebrate something that certainly isn't a need.... "

her friends all encouraged her to go for it, since after all it's once in a lifetime! and late last night, she bought the tickets, so she's committed to it. then it occurred to me that those of us here who love her might want to offset those costs, kinda like her family here sending her to visit her family there. (i'm picturing a hundred of us lifting her up to fly across the ocean... cue inspirational music here ;^)

and so i'm taking up a collection. i think the easiest thing is for me to collect via paypal and then forward a lump sum to her. (i'm happy to give an accounting later to anyone who wants it, of course, and if you'd rather give directly to her, you'll have to get her paypal address but go for it).

i invite everyone who knows and loves bare to kick in $5, $10, $20 bucks -- how awesome would it be for her to know she's traveling on a gift from 100 or more of the women who so love and admire her here? even a buck or two puts your support into her journey.

my paypal address is leslieayres at hotmail dot com -- please make a note that it's for bare with your tribe name so i can let her know everyone who contributed to her.

and bare, i know you're gonna say we don't need to do this. yeah, we know that. and we want you to reprazent at your reunion without having to spend every cent you have. i know i love you, and that love is echoed all around this place.
Okay... now that I got that out of my system... IT ROCKS!

I went for the American Brazilian (translation: Bald). I learned something about myself I did not know. I have unruly hair that goes all different directions and does not want to be ripped out for nothin. The technician was totally cool, she was diligent in trying to get it all. It hurt like hell, but she was very good about telling me what she was doing and explaining why she was waxing the same place over and over. It didn't feel nearly as eeeewwwww as I thought it would. Once I got over the fact that this woman was touching my bits it wasn't such a big deal. She clearly sees them all the time, and she chatted away as if it were nothing, so it put me at ease. I didn't even feel too weird when she used the tweezers to get the little ones the wax missed. I just lied back and looked at the ceiling and did what she told me to do. It took about 45 minutes... I'm not kidding, they were stubborn suckers. It really fucking hurt. I took two Motrin beforehand but didn't have time for a glass of wine. I'm having one now though! Two actually.

Anyway... thanks ladies for all the previous discussions we've had about waxing and cleaning up the bits. I remembered everything you all said and look forward being smooth and carefree on the playa this year!

this is a re-post from another burner (jarJar)

Its that time of year again when many of us are making plans for the playa. One of the major plans is how we are getting there which often includes carpooling with other burners we may or may not know very well. I was thinking about my personal experiences with this and realized there some things I have learned over the years that are important to share with the community.

Things to remember when offering or accepting rides to and from burning man.

1) DRUGS. Truth is our community is varied, some of the people have good jobs that have security clearances or other stringent requirements that absolutely prevent them not only from partaking in any form of illegal substance, but they also would risk losing their careers if they were found to have contraband in their vehicles or on their vehicles passengers. On the other hand there are many in the community who do choose to have this as part of their life. Regardless of where you stand in life it is very important that you have this discussion with all passengers prior to accepting or offering a ride. Unfortunately however even this is not always honored, for example last year when we offered a ride to a fellow burner we were adamant that absolutely no drugs or illegal substances could be in the vehicle. Unfortunately this person chose to violate this and brought a large bag of pot along that we did not find out about until we were half way there. this person not only broke their word but also endangered the career of the vehicle owner. Fortunately they were not pulled over. However I have heard other stories that show how responsible others are, for example another burner in the community had the same rule for there passengers. When one of the passengers had some extra "gifts" left over after the burn that passenger found someone else to take the gift home in another vehicle rather than break the agreement. That is the right and honorable thing to do.

The moral: Know who your riding with, ask others does this person keep there word?

2) CASH. everyone has a different way of splitting expenses. But you need to be clear up front. If you are asking for a certain dollar contribution towards gas, get it before you leave. Things happen its better to not have this hanging in the air. Another approach is alternating who uses a card to put gas in the tank (only do this if you feel confident your passengers card will clear) I have known too many people who have had bad experiences of passengers never giving them the promised contributions, it can ruin friendships. So just get it before you leave and be firm.

3) DEPARTURES. It never fails every year I hear of someone having some issue with a passenger about departures sometimes its leaving town (they were not ready, they were not clear as to where they were at) or issues leaving the playa they would not or could not leave at the set time. Or a driver left a passenger on playa with just a note saying they left early they would have to find another ride, Or a ride had to leave due to a medical emergency only to have a passenger dangerously delay them, Or a passenger decide to leave with another person but leaves all there gear to there ride to take care of for them and take to there home, or...

you get the idea there are hundreds of things that can go wrong however some common courtesy and remembering the principles can go a long way toward handling these things appropriately.

a) set a EXACT time and location for leaving both home and the playa.

b) set how you will contact the other parties should some event require the driver to leave the playa sooner than planned (shit happens people!) Its important that you have a way to get a hold of your riders.

c)If for some reason you are a driver and must leave, you owe your riders the courtesy of letting them know face to face if at all possible.

d) IF you are a rider whose ride needs to leave for medical reasons, by all means you need to go or you need to quickly figure out how you and your gear are going home

e) If you chose to go home with others other than your planned ride you need to take your gear too. IF you can not take your gear keep in mind those hauling and dropping off your gear are doing you a HUGE favor. You need to guarantee them a secure place to drop it off and if you can’t guarantee that then you are tasking a risk with your things and that’s not the responsibility of the people who transported your gear sans you. (remember we are currently living in the highest meth use state, many burners on this list had gear stolen from yards and porches this year, have gear dropped off at your own risk)

f) if you do not show up and are packed at the pre set time.... prepare to be left. This is about radical self reliance its not others responsibility to wait on you, take care of you, pack for you or find you.

I hope these tips may help others avoid some of the pit falls of playa ride sharing this year. Every year there are stories maybe this year there will be fewer.

I don't have a lot of stuff. Tent, cooler, chair, clothing bin or two. I'll be with a theme camp so I can travel a little lighter. I'd be more than happy to pay half your gas and share driving responsibilities. I'm not crazy or obnoxious. ;>)

If I can't find a ride, I'll be driving my s-10 pickup, which means I'll have room for one other person and their gear. Should only take a tank of gas each way, with is about $50 for my truck. So you'd only have to pay $50.

I'm pretty flexible on departure. I don't have early entry, so I'd like to get there late Monday morning--but really anytime Monday, even 12:01am is fine! Or I'll sit in line with you if you want to show up late Saturday night.

I need to be at work on Tuesday morning (new job) so I'd like to leave late Sunday (after the Temple burn perhaps? During??) or crack of dawn Monday.

Now my dilemma is to camp with him and the camp I helped create or keep my distance and camp with friends? I'm wondering how you ladies out there survive on the playa with your boyfriends and husbands?

For the first time in my life, I am actually starting to get very interesting in getting relationships with the opposite sex. My social skills and self-confidence has significantly increased since I got sober. In addition, my relationships within the community have gotten signfiicantly better since I got clean. (Note: The community has been especially supportive in my recovery)

I am the point in my life where I trying to look for a relationship. My regional (Orange County) does not have any single women that are eligible right now (our community is a great community, super tight-knit but small). They are significantly larger communities in LA and San Diego. I am not active in the LA community, but very active in the San Diego community.

As I look around for relationship, should I try to look within the community? Are Burners are destined to get in relationships with Burners? With my conditions, are Burners going to be more open and accepting of these conditions? Would a person outside the community would be a mismatch because they are not as accepting and tolerant as Burner would be? Since all of my close friends are Burners, would a woman outside of community would have hard time going to Burner events and willing to accept going to the Burn? Would the woman accept the fact that I have to go to three to five twelve-step meetings weekly for the rest of my life? Would the woman accept that I have minor disablity that affects me with my independent living skills and my social skills (even though I am working very hard to improve them)

They are lot of strong points that I do offer: stable job with a very good salary, open-mindness, unconditional love, living life with no resentments, emotional stablity achieved through strong support group, strong sense of fiedlity and brutal honesty, not being manipulative, serenity, devoted to living life on the ten principles of Burning Man, uber well-informed on politics and culture, and of course many other qualities that I do not have time to discuss.

I just want some advice so I do not waste time on the Meet Market. And I especially encourge advice from females within the community.

member of the camp. Â Before the items are disposed of, she would like to find a
member of the camp or a friend of Anthonys, who can sort this out. Â She would
like to take care of it before the Burn, and she doesnt want someone showing up
looking for their camping gear, after the unit is cleaned out.

Here is what I do already:

*we'll be sleeping in a cargo van, so I know that cross breeze ventilation is key, as is covering windows, etc. I'm hoping this will help against the feel-like-ass feeling upon waking up to stunning heat all groggy and sweaty.

*foot baths with some nice peppermint Dr. Bronner's

*wetting down a shawl or something and draping it over myself, as well as wetting my hair down continuously with a spray bottle.

So, any other little tricks you've found? Would love to hear them!

B.E.D is reaching put to theme camps for the 2nd year asking you to each take just a few minuets with your camp do discuss sex at Burning man and how to stay safe. We hope you join the challenge this year!

Join our 2009 Theme Camp Challenge!
Wondering what you can do to create a healthy awareness of sexual assault on the playa and help keep your buddies safe? We have written easy to follow guidelines to help you discuss the subject and bring you camp up to date on this important issue!
www.bureauoferoticdiscourse.org/Home.php
Thank you for accepting the B.E.D. Theme Camp Challenge!

B.E.D. challenges every single Burning Man theme camp to make sexual assault education part of their camp business. We are asking every camp to sit down with your members and discuss the issue and responsibility of sexual exploration at Burning Man. How do you broach this sensitive subject? We have developed a short outline to help you out. It's easy!

Gather your peeps around (or use an email forum) and read the following:

"We want our campmates to be open and to enjoy any and all sex you may have at Burning Man! However, every year there are incidences of sexual assault on the playa and we want our beloved camp mates to be safe! So, even though it's an awkward subject, we would like to briefly talk about sex and what behavior we expect from all of our camp members. To promote this awareness, the Bureau of Erotic Discourse has asked up to endorse the following guidelines for safe sexual adventures:

#1 Always ask before touching, even if you know them! It's polite, it's good manners, it will earn their respect.

#2 Respect your partner's desires and boundaries. How do you find them out? ASK! Again, it's fun and sexy to find out a little about your partner before diving in.

#3 Do not have sex with an intoxicated or stoned person... not only is it technically against the law, but it is potentially very hurtful to that person. And what fun it that??? If you have made a sober pre-agreement with a partner and go get fucked up, thats cool... but do not pick up a drunk, high hottie and take advantage! Be smart, take care of your partner, cover your butt, get sober ... then get some conscious luvin'.

#4 Card your partner... OK, maybe that's exaggerating but please make sure your potential partner is of age. There are some darn hot underage peeps out there, so be aware! Again, we don't want anyone hurt out there.

#5 If you hear or see one of our campmates in trouble, step in and ask if they need help! We would like it if you did this with anyone out there, but we absolutely expect it with our theme camp family. We take care of each other! In addition, consider buddying up when you go out for the evening. Guys watch out for the women, and vice versa! We do not want any of our family member assaulted this year.

#6 If, god forbid, someone does get assaulted or feels threatened in any way, we want you to know right now that we support everyone here! No matter how it went down- tell us. There are amazing services available both at the Ranger Stations, Medical Tents and Emergency Services. We will go with you, we will hold your hand, we will take care of you. If some thing happens-- tell us! The same goes if some thing happens within our camp or outside of it. Remember, you are not alone!

If you need help with any sexual assault, domestic violence or other threatening situation, know that Burning Man has developed a team of Emergency Services personnel to help victims of violence or abuse. Seek help at any Ranger Station or Medical Station.

Also if you would like to donate to our button fund or purchase your own BED ware go too
www.bureauoferoticdiscourse.org/Home.php

long story short, it is a huge old pelt from a llama or goat of some kind, a woman used it for years before donating it to a reuse/upcycling shop by my house. it is a huge pelt, about the size of a blanket, and both the fur and the skin on back are in good shape--got it for less than $10

all moral dilemmas aside, i am trying to determine how best to sew in into costumes and "care for" it. for example, it is one large piece comprised of many smaller pieces sewn together, and some of the joins need to be re-sewn by me. also, i am not sure if i need to oil, or otherwise clean, the skin backing. i should not wash it, right?
also, can i dye something like this? it is a natural grey color now.

i am planning to sew some leggies, a belt of some kind, and even a furry dance bra.

this year I'll be making the trip out to the playa in my trusty '96 toyota camry, and I was wondering if any of you lovely ladies had some tips on minimizing dust damage. I don't have the budget to buy one of those full on car cover things, but I'm sure there are a bunch of little things I can do to make cleaning the inside of the car a little less of a headache. I am BY NO MEANS expecting to keep the interior of the car completely dust-free. I know the playa well enough to know that I'd be kidding myself to even try. I have heard, though, that stuff like saran-wrapping the vents can cut down on dust pile-up.
So. Suggestions? Comments? how-to's?
thanks much!

What are you going to do differently this year?

I don't mean this to turn into just a "tips and tricks" thread, but just more a discussion about learning/growth/change/being a better Burner, be it mentally or physically or socially.

This year, my pledge is to do one thing each day that makes me uncomfortable.
Whether it's going to an event in the WhatWhereWhen that just sounds horrid to me, or stopping to talk to a bunch of strangers, or doing some performance art, etc etc.... but I want to break out a little bit into the unknown.

I'm missing the directions to the shade structure and can't find it on the internet anywhere. I'm having a hard time searching back that far on Tribe to find the post (if it even still exists).

I'm cross-posting this in hopes that someone has the same structure or at the very least, knows the business name so I can get the instructions.

It was a small company selling it (looked like fellow burners) and if I remember correctly, they only sold this structure on their website at the time. The structure has ratchets, yellow lines, poles, stakes, and a blue tarp that's reflective on the other side. It's very basic and was easy enough for 2 people to put up in 20 minutes.

Thanks!

Zoe Jakes is an internationally known and beloved bellydancer from Oakland, and she also performs as part of Black and Blue Burlesque and in the Extra Action Marching Band. She handmakes most of her costuming, and since she is a professional touring dancer (with her two cohorts in Beats Antique and as part of the Bellydance Superstars) she really NEEDS this stuff! Please keep in mind that while she is very successful, she doesn't necessarily have the funds to replace all of her costuming--especially because so much of it was made with one-of-a-kind items, etc.
*a turkish banjo with a thin neck and a round wooden head, with a pick-up
*3 dance costumes heavily decorated with coins and beads, one black and white, one gold-ish, and one black with fabric floral elemens and *old keys on it. All are covered in antique jewelry
*About 12 large and heavy silver indian bracelets, antique as well
*Two metallic scarves-covered in silver thread with designs
*A metal box with fancy trims and rhinestone flowers in it

This year, however, Im pretty much done with yarn braids, as I found a way better alternative. Wool dreads. Theyre lighter, easier to install, and can be customized really really cool. Plus, when youre done with the burn, take them out, and attatch them to a clip or scrunchie, and you have falls for all the parties you are going to go to for the rest of the year. And then next burn, I can put them back in.

Im sitting around the house on maternity leave until the baby comes in May, so its a perfect time for me to get rolling on the dreads. If you want some, time to order them is NOW, because I wont be able to roll them once I have the baby.I will install them pre-burn week, but as far as making them, I need to get started now.

Direct message me, and I will tell you where to get the materials, and where to have them sent. Pricing is 100$ to make the dreads, and another 100$ to install. But once you have the dreads, theyre yours to keep and re-use.
I am really appreciating any advice at this point.
I need to go home (if only it was as easy as clicking the heels of my ruby slippers...<sigh>)

Hey Hotties! I thought this woud be the best place to express myself about Burning Man and my troubles this year.

My history: I have been with my husband for 11 years. He was the one who first inspired me to go to BMan. At the time, I needed a place to express my personal freedom and sexuality and autonomy. We are heavy into music festivals, too. A few years back though, he got tired of the hedonistic quailty of going to such events, he kinda stopped partying, and didnt feel like being around people that were messed up. Mind you, the music festivals I go to are really community based (High Sierra etc) and not so much a place for hippys to do drugs. They go for the music first. These festivals and Burning Man are a part of my life.
Since he stopped, he has continued to let me go. of course! He wouldnt take things away from me. We make our own choices. He is not interested in attending Burning Man. Not only does he have horrible asthma, he has health conditions that make it so he cannot tolerate heat, etc....and he isnt really into the communal thing. He likes to watch the man burn on TV and loves to hear stories, though.
I kind of fucked up the past 2 years, by being a little too dorked out on BMan and the festivals. I do 4 events a year. 2 small Sierra festivals, High Sierra, and Burning Man. But, I get really wrapped up in these events. I have neglected him and his needs.
This year, he is coming back to High Sierra with me, which is aweosme. I am so excited. However, he wants me to not do Burning Man so we can do a road trip instead, or something that has to do with us, and not just me. I fully understand and I dont want to lose him.
However, I feel like a big baby.....I am really sad about missing this years Burn. I would almost rather take away one of the small festivals instead, but they dont tax the mind and wallet like BMan does, so I understand why it haas to be Burning Man that is nixed from my schedule. HE DESERVES THIS!!
I just want some shoulders to cry on that I cannot be there this year. I am trying to be strong. When it comes down to it, so what? Its good to take a year off.....however I would rather just GO this year, and take the next 2 years off instead of this year. I am sure I can work something out, but I really should just buck up and be totally cool with skipping this year. its just so hard! BMan has become a part of me and my dreams and personality. I could easily prepare for 2010 and 11 to not burn, but I have already gotten my ticket and made plans for this year, so its so hard to give up. HE IS WORTH IT......I just gotta keep that in mind!

My apologies for just rambling, I know this is just bouncing my thoughts off of all of you, but anything would help ease my mind.
